I made a tool to browse and query projects on Show HN

Hi, I just finished a first usable version of a tool to get info on the huge quantity of projects posted on HackerNews, in the “Show HN” section. It is available at showhn-dashboard.netlify.app. The idea is to get the posted projects and follow every information that can be found about it: GitHub project, GitHub & Twitter accounts, website, etc.

I needed such a tool to contact potential users for my other side project My Side Project Rocks, so I thought why not create a small SaaS to offer the feature to the world 😉

Of course, there is still a lot of information I could add: fetch projects on other websites (Reddit, ProductHunt…), scrap other social media profiles, etc. Also, the search is pretty minimal right now, but I think it is “good enough” 🙂.

For now, everything can be accessed for free, and I plan on leaving the application open-source (I love this model that Plausible uses for instance). But there is definitely an opportunity to sell the service. The pricing model doesn’t have to be original:

  • Free/demo: only access the first 15 results of any query
  • Basic (~$19.99/mo): access all the results
  • Pro (~$29.99/mo): Excel export, alerts, daily or weekly reports…

This model can be adjusted and I chose these prices quite randomly, but what I am not sure of yet is who my main potential clients are. I’m thinking of two personas:

  • The one who has a service to sell to developers: hosting, ads, SEO…
  • The one who wants to recruit developers.

What do you think? Does it look like a good idea to pursue?
