I start working on my startup today!

Hey guys,

I always wanted to start my own startup, but I didn't do it because I was to afraid and I thought I need a good and at least a one billion dollar idea. Guess what, you don't need to have a great or the best idea.

I hate how LinkedIn works and I don't like the way how you can connect with other people, there is an issue regarding networking and connecting with other people. So I start working on a solution today.

My tech stack will be Next.js with Typescript and Node.js for my backend, if you want I can make another post going more into detail about the technical side. Anyways I wanted to get it out, I will start now and I want to build a small MVP where people can sign up for a mailing list first.

I post this because I want to document my story here, so today I will work on the frontend and maybe I get to work on the backend. As soon as I have something to deploy I will let you guys know and maybe you can signup if you like what you see.

I wish you all a good weekend.

Hey Manuel, I always cheer up when I read posts like yours here on IH. It gives me the feeling of being right at home. Go for it, mate! Persistence is key, don't be afraid to fail. Don't be afraid to ask for feedback, opinions. I'm looking forward to see your prototype soon!

Will you go full time or just testing the waters on the side?

    1. 1

Great question, I‘m not sure yet. It’s not so easy to decide which way to go, either I go full time and might not be able to pay my bills in the end or I work full time but I’m not able to scale fast enough because of time. I‘m thinking a lot about it. Maybe I quit and take a part time job in retail or something like that.

I will make a post about it in the future so stay tuned! Oh and by the way, what is your opinion about it?

      1. 1

I think you need focus to start. For example I started with 5 months of work for Deployment from Scratch full-time, then went part-time (mostly just because it was a good opportunity), then went less, then scaled down to part-time (2 days a week) to properly finish the book.

I think that for a proper SaaS which I also want to start one day, I'll have to go full-time at least for as long as I have money to do so :).

        1. 1

I agree. I think it’s important to be able to focus on your startup without distractions and a full time job is a huge distraction in my opinion. I have huge respect for people who work 40 hours a week and still have enough time to work on their startup.

Right now I’m still in the beginning phase and I’m trying to figure things out. But I guess working full time on an idea for 3-4 months is a great way to see how far you can come and after that I would probably take a part time job with 20 hours max.

This is awesome Manuel! I think lots of us would love it if you posted regularly - the good, the bad, and the ugly. It's so much fun to follow along with makers as they build things, and it sounds like you could grow an audience of your first users in the process.

    Best of luck!

Thank you! Didn’t expect so many people to comment here. I will definitely post regular, if you want you can follow me so Updates in the future!

congratulations and good luck. I'm working on something similar quonective.com - A new professional networking social media for investors and founders. It's good to see that I'm not the only one who thinks that there should be another way to build real relationships and network with people.

I'll be thankful if you can give me your feedback on my website and my startup idea. Feel free to dm me if you want to learn more or share ideas.

Looks great and sounds interesting. Always happy to talk about ideas and opportunities.

I think this space has a lot of opportunities for startups. Connecting with other people and networking is actually not as easy as it seems and as it should be. We live in a times where almost everyone on this planet has internet and it was never more difficult to network effectively than it is now. I hope I can help people with my vision and ideas.

    Good luck!

How will your solution be different than LinkedIn? What's going to get users to join when there's no network?

    1. 2

      Thank you for the question.

I don’t see it as another LinkedIn nor as a clone. I want to build something which will help people to build real connections with strangers and at the same time people can build a network. Through all this social media it’s hard to reach out to the people who you might need or want to meet. So I decided to build something in a different way for this problem.

Users can join early for the beta and they can give me feedback. After some time I will release it then to the public.

All you have to do is to give us some information and we will try to find perfect matches for you to connect with. After that we can introduce you to the people who might fit your criteria.

As an example you might look for people who are junior developers and someone is looking for people who are senior developers. We try to match these people, it’s important for us to make it seem like you meet someone at the office.

Sounds like a great place to start!

Have you seen lunchclub.AI? Sounds similar, maybe something you can take some inspiration from.

        Cheers and good luck.

        1. 1

Didn’t know about lunchclub, thank you for the link. It’s great to see that my idea is probably working to some degree, it motivated me actually!

Did you use lunchclub? Would love to here about your experience and maybe improvements you would like to see.

          Thank you for your time.

          1. 2

            I haven’t used it.

I did some user research around a similar idea and one of the issues I heard a few times about lunchclub is the lack of continuity.. that the calls feel like first dates and a bit superficial. Maybe something to investigate if you try it out.

            1. 1

Great hint, I will look into it and I will definitely do some more research. I already have some ideas and great use cases. Thanks.
