If you're a maker, I need your input 🙏

Hey Indie Hackers 👋

Let me ask one question.

How would you prefer to identify and label yourself as a maker?

The backstory

Two months ago, I built a clothing store for makers like myself.

I love everything about building products, and I wanted a way to discretely show it to the world.

I set out to create a minimalistic clothing label - Maker Threads

My problem

Since day one, I've consciously made the effort to speak with as many customers as I can. My goal was to understand how I can build the best product possible.

One of the core questions I always ask is for input on shirt designs. This helps include my customers within the design process.

Based on the feedback I receive, I've noticed three common types of shirt designs makers frequently suggest;

Sayings: These are shirts with popular catchphrases or sayings. One of my popular shirts features the 'always blue' chant from Silicon Valley.

Self-identified labels: These shirts include titles that makers can self identify with. My '100% bootstrapped' and 'maker' tees have also been popular.

Trends and product features: I recently released a series of no-code shirts. Each shirt in this series was designed to show some of the key features of popular no-code tools. For makers using Webflow, I created a flexbox tee, and those using Bubble, a repeating group design.

Your input

Of the three categories above, I've love to know if there's a particular style of shirt design you'd prefer to see as a maker.

I like these phrases, they're like a "secret codes" that sound like gibberish to the average person (just ship it) but totally resonates when someone from "your circle" reads it.

Congrats on spending time talking to people...it's pretty obvious you did the work and understood what it's all about.

Just a few tip about acquisition:
Have you tried using FB ads with a picture of a person wearing that shirt? The person can be making various facial expression depending on what it writes on the shirt. For example, a guy can be angry and pointing at "Just ship it". Or a girl could be extremely happy for the "launch day" shirt, etc.

      Thanks, appreciate the thoughts!

I haven't experimented with Facebook ads yet. It's definitely on the cards, but my main goal was to build a product that would grow organically through UGC.

Happy to let you know it goes if I decide to run some ads.

I think I would mostly like to get "Self-Identified labels" type tees. So another maker would be able to say hey that guy is a maker.

      Awesome, appreciate the input mate!
