🥇 I'm ranking #1! But does it mean anything?

Today I was browsing Google and found out that my website buildfaster.co ranks #1 on Google for the keyword "HTML themes made easy as pie".

At the time, this was pretty cool. However, it doesn't have a very high search volume.

Do you have any suggestions on how to rank high for greater volume keywords?

    Awesome @BraydenTW
You are already on the path to building a strong search engine presence. Now, the next step would be to strengthen that presence. I agree with @Michael_Andreuzza. You need to rank for more generic terms to get traffic and more than traffic, getting the right traffic is important.

The search intent for your keyword shows that long form, list based blog posts are ranking. Start creating those and link them back to your homepage/landing page.

The best idea here is to create a cluster of subtopics around your primary service and create a blog post on each of those subtopics.

To make it simpler, you can have different blog posts that talk about different aspects of how HTML themes can be made simpler to search, buy and use.

Feel free to get in touch if you need any help in creating content for your blogs. Good luck :)

Thanks for the awesome tips @Harshitbhatia! How would I setup a blog? Is there a way I can do it on a separate site like Medium or something?

      1. 1

Well if search engine rankings is your objective, setting it up on your main domain would be the best option. Basically you need to build topical authority on search engines, and having content on a cluster of related topics on your main area of expertise will give you a boost.

Setting up a blog on Medium is not a bad idea. The only thing is; it can give you traffic and reach, but it won't have much effect on your main website's search engine rankings.

Ok that would make sense. Do you know of ways I can make a blog on an external site but get good rankings?

          1. 1

Your Medium blog can rank if you do it right. But I am afraid any external blog won't get the same results on your main domain than what a blog on your domain itself will.

Ok sounds good. Thanks for helping me out :)

Wow I didn't see that! If you don't mind me asking, how did you find that?

Have you tried Google Search Console?

Search Console is a great way to see what your google-visits have searched on 😊

        1. 1

Yeah I use Google Search Console but the best words I could find were "buildfaster" and "easy html themes"

      2. 1

        I just tried the search.

        1. 1

Oh ok! Thanks for telling me :)

  2. 3

Well, that has happend to me too when I Google for the exact name of my project or the slogan.

Of course you are going to be first doing so, unless its such a generic name/words...

What you should be ranking for is

    • HTML themes.
    • Easy HTML Themes.
      And derivatives...

Because those are the real keywords users are searching for...

The probabilities to have someone searching
for "HTML Themes made easy as pie" are quiet low comparing to other more natural search queries.

    1. 1

Yeah, agreed. Thanks for the ideas :)

Just interested (if you're okay sharing), you made WickedTemplates. What type of keywords do you use? I know you aren't like me and have just plain HTML/CSS themes but I'm just curious ;)

I can't remember now. Look through devtools, anyone can see them.

        1. 1

Okay, thanks for your help :)

I've gotten millions of SEO hits to my properties over the years.

The way I see it, you have two choices in modern SEO:

    • target a handful of keywords with a decent volume (but correspondingly higher competition) and focus both on writing better content and on convincing as many websites as possible to link to it (google "link outreach" - you can hire services for this). Sometimes you can get a relative "bargain" in terms of volume per unit difficulty of competition. Use a tool like ahrefs for this and focus on their Keyword Difficulty (KD) metric.

    • target a ton of low competition keywords with lower volume and little or no competition. In this case, a 300 page article would suffice to rank. This is my preferred strategy — I talk about it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOE_sQTyQOo

Cool! I’ll check it out. Thanks for the tips by the way. These are very helpful :)

why do you want to rank high for greater volume keywords? another option is you could convert your existing SEO traffic into more subscribers and sales - basically, make it a more effective channel without having to do much extra work

    1. 1

I see what you mean. However, I want to put in the hard work now so then later down the road I won't regret not doing it.

    Congrats!

Keep creating content - understand your buyer personas and the questions they are asking as it relates to your niche and keywords you want to rank for.

I love using sites like Reddit and Quora to find questions people are asking that I can provide answers for, because the better you answer questions the more of an authority you will become and the higher you will rank for other terms (even broader ones like 'html themes', which I'm guessing would be your holy grail).

I wrote a post here on Indiehackers about my strategy before writing my next blog posts to improve their chance at ranking, hope it helps and good luck!

Happy to chat SEO any time btw!

Ok thanks! I'll let you know :)
