I'm working on something a little different, and I'm starting today.

Chris @blunicorn

IH is a super inspiring place, I love seeing all the amazing ideas and shared stories of trials and tribulations, wins and loses, but everything is Product, SaaS and Services.

Don't get me wrong, that's how I make my living and it's a scene I love. However, I want to start something for everyone. Not a b2b, b2c or whatever. A non-profit organisation, one that can leverage the power of modern technology, and things like micro-donations, to channel it into a non-profit that dedicates resources to restoring and protecting our planet.

In 2018, the United Nations gave us approximately 12 years to radically change the way we live, work, and treat our environment, or face truly catastrophic and irreversible consequences. Well, it's 2019 now, and there's only 11 years left and barely anybody seems to give a damn. There's so much apathy and wilful ignorance. But I'm not interested in denialism or delay, I'm interested in action.

Suffice to say, if you care about the future of our planet but feel fatalistic or unable to effect change on the scale required, you're not alone. Collective action is the only solution and I want to work on creating some kind of catalyst for the change we need.

There's a hashtag on instagram, facebook etc that artists often use to keep themselves motivated and deep-dive on a particular area of their creative practice, it's called #The100DayProject . It's like the 12 startups in 12 months scene, but typically focused on the arts. Well...I think starting a business/non-profit etc is highly creative too (I'm sure you'd all agree!), and I'm going to co-opt the movement and start a non-profit in 100 days. I'm going to document my progress on social media, IH etc, and reach out to all of you for advice when needed and generally share the journey of committing to building something for 100 days.

I'm not going to get into exactly what my idea is for now, I'm going to be outlining that in the very first few days of the 100. Day 1 is complete and I undertook the following:

  • Settled on a name: Target 2030 (bought target2030 .org)
  • Setup wordpress hosting and have a theme installed that I know well
  • Created social media pages (no content on them yet!):
    • Facebook
    • Instagram
    • Twitter

Anyway, it's not much, but the idea of hashtag and project is you do minimum 10 mins a day, but more when you have time. I have a full time job, and a young child, so life is pretty full as is, but I'll make time and over a 100 days I can go a long way and lay the foundations for things to come.

So, watch this space, and follow me if you want to see how I get on and see something a little different to SaaS and Services for a change. Also, please get in touch any time you have thoughts or ideas, that's what IH is for after all :)

Unfortunately most startups will fail, so keep your fingers crossed me either way!

Oh yeah, and here's the first post under #the100dayproject on IG:

Hey Chris - I would love to follow your progress on this. I have followed you on Instagram. :)

I hope you will come back here daily to let us know about what is happening. And how could support you.

You could also add it as a product and log your milestones or stories there.

    1. 1

Oh yeah, great idea :) I was planning to add the product but had forgotten there was also the milestone part of it. Is there are particular guidance regarding what should be deemed milestones on IH? I guess it's quite personal maybe.

Thanks for following on instagram, day two here I come!

I ran a non-profit for a while. It is kind of a brutal experience. You raise a million dollars, deploy it for 2 million dollars of benefit. Then the next year do it again. No built in growth.

A business on the other hand, you raise a million dollars, deploy it for 2 million dollars of benefit, then the next year deploy the 2 million for 4 million dollars of benefit.

An overly simplistic view, but I find that businesses are a great way to affect the change you want as well.

    Good luck on your project!

Thanks @joshdance - I agree, lots of different approaches, though it's hard to imagine people identifying with a for-profit business that was fighting climate change I imagine, though not impossible :) What happened with the non-profit you ran previously in the end?

      1. 1

I strongly identify with a for-profit business that is fighting climate change. :) I love the idea of positive feedback loops. If you find something that works, you can do it more and more. Vs non-profits have limits.

I closed it down. We weren't having as big an impact as I wanted and I was trying to finish college. :)

        1. 1

Yeah, it's so hard really to have impact, I really don't know how much I can make, but I do know that there's loads of people who think they can't do much individually and hopefully I can channel that someway :) I'll certainly have more impact getting people to pool resources for a few causes than my current status quo most evenings which = watching netflix haha

Good for you! This is cool, I’m excited to see what you are up to. I don’t think people don’t give a damn, it’s just that when your country is doing everything you don’t want it to do it’s hard not to feel defeated. I know there are a lot of good people doing a lot of things to try and make a difference- it’s just that we don’t hear about it. Anyway, no IG here but wishing you all the best on this!

Thanks, I'll share my progress on IH too if you want to check on progress here instead, IG's not for everyone and I suspect I'll get better advice from people in this community on many things.

You're right about people caring, they definitely do, it just feels like the level of engagement or interest from those that I know doesn't match the scale of the problem. I have some friends that admit to experiencing 'climate anxiety' whilst also seemingly being unable to act, because they feel like it's pointless to doing anything as one person. I recognise that feeling but I'm determined to do something, anything really, especially if it brings those individuals together!
