I'm Writing My First Non-Fiction Book In Public

From Fiction to Non-Fiction

I've written fiction for most of my life. Last year, right as the pandemic was really taking hold, my first published book came out. It's a collection of short fiction released by a small publisher. I've also written technical (and not so technical) blogs for over a decade. Now, it's time to put those two experiences together.

I'm writing my first non-fiction book. The focus is entirely on my non-traditional journey to learning how to code. My hope is that it will be an inspirational guide for those who take the non-traditional path. For me, that meant struggling with this huge desire to learn to code but not being able to figure it out...for 20 years! For me, this meant not learning to code until I was in my 30s. For me, this meant feeling like an outside playing in an insider-only game.

I think there are so many people out there that want to learn to code or are in the process. Many will struggle. Many will feel like outsiders too. I hope my writing can help inspire and provide a little bit of discipline to get over the hump of learning.

Writing in Public

I'll be writing the book in public. I've already released the first draft of my introduction chapter. Anyone who wants to will be able to access each chapter as I release them and provide feedback. The feedback can be in line-notes form (just highlight a section of text and add a comment), or it can be more conversational (open the menu at the top-right and click Conversation).

My goal in doing this is to take the build in public attitude I've had with my software projects and apply it to writing a book. I'm not the first to do this, and I certainly won't be the last. But it's a first for me.

I hope you'll join me on this journey. The book is available for pre-order now, and the target release date is August 16th. Here's the book's page:
