The nice thing about #1 is that it often means the user starts with a populated dashboard vs. just getting dumped into an empty one. I ran marketing for a BI tool and we never made a sale when the user started with a blank dashboard.
You're a machine Gene :) I'm a big fan of products that let you demo without an account so you can get stuck in. Not always viable, but for certain cases it should help qualified leads that sign up!
🙌 I love apps that let me test them out before signing up. I can't remember what his conversion rate was but I think AJ from Carrd said it was pretty high. Carrd lets people set their sites up before creating an account.
If you think about it, makes a lot of sense! A lot of time goes into setting up and tweaking a page -- saving is a no-brainer at that point. But like you said, not always viable. I list as many strategies as I can so people can pick out what works for them.
Yes! Definitely have an onboarding email sequence. That's one of the strategies in the Swipe file ;) I think it was Rob Walling in one of his talks who said onboard them through your app then do it again through email.
If that's too much work for an indie developer, just reaching out person to person is not a bad idea. Rand Fishkin did it for his new startup and I imagine he gets a lot of emails!
