Indie Hackers: You can do better.

The main reason why I joined Indie Hackers is learn from others and get feedback. However, I feel like most indie hackers here are complaining about something and they are doing the same exact thing.

What can you do to make this community better?

I've said this before but the YC cohorts all strive to help each other - that has to be the prime purpose of IH or we've got nothing. Use each other's products whenever possible. Deep dive feedback instead of just taking a peak. Maybe some form of product reviews. Etc.

    1. 2

I agree! Are you in other communities other than IH and YC?

      1. 1

I'm going to setup a YC cohort style private group. No fee!
If you'd like to join send a message (empty is fine) here.

Have some agreed to join already, if more than 60 join I'll split into multiple groups. (40-50 is the ideal size for a group where everyone participates)

Idea is that an upvote and quick 'congrats on the launch' on PH shouldn't be too much to ask of the group. (And all are welcome, participation is all that is required)

This is how I engage with Indiehackers:

    • I help moderate a group with 14k members, I post every day multiple times
    • I have created a YouTube channel whose sole purpose is provide feedback on IH (& others) request/posts
    • I create crossposted content from my blog to IH when I think what I write it's useful, they're mostly my guides on how to create better landing pages (check my profile for a couple of pinned ones)

What else do you think I should do?

In case you wanna see my YT it's here

    1. 2

Sounds like a great commitment to the community. You have a new subscriber to the YT channel :)

What is the community you moderate?

      1. 1

        "Landing Page Feedback" -> https://www.indiehackers.com/group/landing-page-feedback

I appreciate it! Thanks for your follow! and of course, I am glad to help any time!

      I've subscribed, by the way!

    3. 1

Yes! Yes! Yes! That's is how a Indie Hacker should be. I love this community!

I have tried to be positive, but I get discouraged making a post.

      1. 1

Why do you get discouraged? You have nothing to lose

        1. 1

I have submitted posts with less than 10 views and/or no comments. I've deleted them after a week or so.

          1. 1

Well - this post right here has gotten 20 comments almost and tons of views ;D

My point is that not always you get the traction you want!

            1. 1

Yes, because it's about this community. Other indie hackers feel the same way.

I personally enjoy receiving feedback or giving advice—helpfulness—is what I like to see.

    P.S.
I’m in quite a few communities now where I’ve seen requests for invites to indie hackers. I think having some sort of application process would be nice.

    1. 1

Yes, and I agree.! Can you list a few communities you're in?

      1. 1

Most of my communities are about learning or design, not entrepreneurship per se. What type of communities are you looking to join?

          1. 1

I’m not part of any Entrepreneurship communities specifically, but maybe https://sudharshan.gumroad.com/l/communitylist has one

            1. 1

Cool. I will check it out! Thank you!

All we can do is contribute and hope to bring back the original concept . I have been trying to comment way more lately knowing I will be moving forward on an idea I've been working on. I used IH for so much when I initially found the website. The negative chatter has grown and it's scary to think such a pure concept (that's also FREE) could somehow find a lack of community from the one topic many of us consider "the ultimate dream". I fear a small part is a surge of people with the wrong idea of what is possible in these groups. I don't know if it's unmotivated users or fear of failing, but it's caused a theme around expecting something for nothing.

Platforms like this one can't just be reproduced, and I hope more communication can show a path to gaining back the momentum.

"I fear a small part is a surge of people with the wrong idea of what is possible in these groups. "

      • I had the same thought! What can you do about it?

"I don't know if it's unmotivated users or fear of failing, but it's caused a theme around expecting something for nothing."

      • That's a natural. I think failing is a good thing for learning purposes. However, I see where you are coming from.

"I don't know if it's unmotivated users or fear of failing, but it's caused a theme around expecting something for nothing."

      • I think it can replicated with a smaller audience. It might not be free, but it's better to be in an engaged community.
