Is a pet blog worth it?

2 months ago I started a blog about dogs. I started from passion but I know that are many competitors in this niche. The question: is this blog worth it?

I know there is a lot of work to be done, but I'm ready to make the effort to grow it.

Any feedback & suggestions will be more than welcome. ๐Ÿ˜Š

    Hi,

Pet niche is a niche of lot of emotions ( I am assuming you already know this ).

Pet owners are always looking out for information. I'll say a blog about pets is really worth it. You have a great domain name too.

I opened your blog ; you've done a fair job till this point.

From my side, I'd say there is lot of potential in this niche. Remember, niche isn't saturated, certain keywords are.

So, I'd say you try ranking on keywords where giant publications aren't ranking. These keywords might bring lower profits, but it'll still be good for you when several of these keywords are combined.

I can see you've tried to target some really tough keywords.

For starting out, I'll recommend that rather than chasing "best dog food" , you target "best dry dog food for small dogs". ( the sense is to target keywords that aren't as competitve as the primary ones ).

Try working on some long tail keywords & including affiliate based articles "best, top, list of" etc articles. This will help you get one monetization channel for you blog.

    Keep publishing.

Hi @rachitsingh! thank you for this detailed feedback. It is really helpful! Regarding specific keywords, your right, I'll keep this in mind! I will try to do more frequent posts.

What do you think about backlinks? I have some ideas of how could I get a few backlinks, but if you know how can I make a good strategy, I'm all ears โ˜บ๏ธ

For backlink building, I'd say you start finding out blogs that accept guest posts, there are several ways to do it, one good way is to hunt out blogs that are either in the same niche as yours or a matching one.

For example, if you are doing link building for "best dog collars", you'll want to find blogs that can publish an article like "10 accessories you must have for your dog", in which you can put one link to your article.

You can also get a backlink from the author bio. But I'll suggest you push for in-article link if you can. In the starting, focus on reaching out to smaller blogs since they won't charge a fee or a small one if they do, and then move your way up to some good traffic blogs.

If you need more detailed help, feel free to reachout to me.

@rachitsingh Yeah, I've been applying to 3 blogs for a guest blog article, but I didn't get a response yet. I'll keep trying, tho'. I'll keep your advice in my notes. Thank you again!

    Hi Bianca,

Ever thought of making it a vlog?
That may make this even more appealing to dog owners (fyi, I have 2 dogs ๐Ÿ˜)

So basically, you'd put exactly the same info you now write as an article into a video, and the article itself would be the companion to the video.

Hi @johnt2021! Yeah, actually I did ๐Ÿ˜…. But my 17 yo dog just passed away and I could not for the moment..But in the near future why not..especially that I'm really thinking to adopt a dog. Thank you for your feedback!

      1. 1

Wow, really sorry to hear that... I can't comprehend what that may have felt like...

At some point you can also add a category for Cats.

    1. 2

@saleheen, that's what I'm planning actually. I've started with dogs because I love them too much and once my dog passed away I started writing to this blog. But I do want in the near future to make a category for cats, too. Thank you for the advice!

I started a blog around puppy and dog advice about a year ago. It was so I could have a go at learning SEO and Gatsby. The Google sandbox killed my interest, though. Very frustrating! I keep meaning to pick it back up now it is getting 1 click through a day (on a good day) from google!

@SteveL Every click matters in my opinion. So, if it's still in your interest why not continue. Especially if you have validation from feedbacks. That's why I've posted here. If I get validation is what I need to keep on working on it.

Well if that's what you like doing you should continue w/o looking at the competitors imo.

    1. 1

yes, you're right @Chumra. Competitor research is essential. Thank you!

  7. 1

It'll take you six months to get out of the Google sandbox so don't quit now. Keep posting, ideally daily. Good luck!

Thank you for your feedback @zyzyx123! I won't quit! I really want to get to daily posting soon. For the moment I need to organize my time better as I'm working full-time for another company.

@Primer Oh, yeah! you're right! I checked and now that I see how huge this industry is, I'm more decided to get as much focus as I can on this project. Thank you!
