One personal finance tool I used was the idea of "pay myself first." I have built a disaster fund, a house downpayment fund, etc, with this mechanism. (still have outstanding debt, though, but that's a whole other conversation).
I also have a history of sticking to my word, never being 'late' or 'behind', much to the detriment of my emotional, mental and physical health. I don't like the "hustle" culture, but I also don't like people who don't stick to what they promise - no matter what comes up.
I'm working on things/myself ;) But...
Here's my question: I have planned to work one day a week on my project Laravel Hacker (an educational resource for secure Laravel programming). I'm balancing this with my regular contract work. Ideally I'd like to work full time on LH, and not for my consulting clients. This week has been derailed and I'm pretty far behind on client work. In addition, I haven't even figured out how I can work on LH yet. What are your thoughts on whether I should let my client work remain behind so that I can "pay myself first" by working on LH - or - should I allow myself this one week break - and try not to stress out over it - as long as it's not a habit? (I feel like I know my answer, but I'd love opinions from others who have struggled with this).
