Launched MVP for browser-based video editor

Hey everyone, today is the day that I finally launch the MVP of Mastershot. Mastershot is a revolutionary browser-based video editor. By browser-based video editor, I mean that everything happens in the browser, including the rendering! This is a huge improvement over current video editors that require sending your content to the server for the actual rendering for a number of reasons. The first and foremost reason, is that for large video files, the amount of time you have to wait before starting to edit can be a while to due to upload speeds. Additionally there are bandwidth costs associated with uploading.

Currently Mastershot supports a wide variety of standard video editing tools, including, adding audio/video/images/text to a project. Extracting the audio from a video. Rendering in Full HD. And much much more.

Since I started Mastershot as a technical challenge for myself, coupled with the fact that my costs are low due to the fact that videos are rendered in the browser, I'm launching the first version of Mastershot 100% free!

I'd be happy to answer any questions and hear feedback as to how you'd like to see this project progress.

Just about to start adding video content to my newsletter and came across this post. Congrats on the launch @jacobbeckerman - looking forward to trying out Mastershot 🙂

Interaction with the video editor is technically effortless - you can open the program for the first time and immediately start working in it, so it's excellent for beginners. Icons and captions are informative; there are tooltips, you can do a lot by simply dragging and dropping. Importantly, it is possible to add many video and audio tracks and title tracks to the project. You can mute a track or clip and detach the sound from the video. It is also convenient that the scale of the timeline changes, and the player can be separated from the program window. It is essential to make video online for fun, not to rush and hurry, and then the video will turn out cool

Congrats, Jacob! I was actually listening to an interview last night with the founder of VEED. Interested to know how your product compares.

    1. 2

Well I would say that the major differentiating factor between Mastershot and VEED is the fact that the videos are rendered in the browser. This has several implications the most important of which is the fact that you don't have to wait (potentially a long time) for your assets to upload to their server to begin editing.

Another aspect that I think is important to note is that since the videos are all processed in the browser your privacy is guaranteed to be maintained. If VEED, or any other video editing site for that matter were to be hacked, many peoples' potentially private videos could be leaked, whereas with Mastershot, your files never leave the browser.

Would be cool to be able to test it before registering :) great job

This is currently under development. You’ll only need to create an account when you want to export your first video.

Video editor here. This is impressive. I've thought for years it must be possible, but always felt the technical aspect would be massive. Congrats on pulling it off; excited to see where this goes.

    1. 2

Yeah, it was quite technically challenging. Funnily enough, that was the reason I actually started working on it, but it seems that the final result (in this MVP stage) is quite good.

Wow Jacob, this is great. 10/10 would use. You should be proud.

Thanks! It did take quite a lot of effort.

First off, congrats on the launch! Secondly, I have one question for you. How do you plan on making money down the line?

    1. 1

At the moment I’m not really looking to make money off of it. I may put in a donation button at some point, but I’m not sure yet.

Another idea that I had was to maybe make it free forever, but like the creator of photopea, place ads to monetize it.

      1. 1

Please ask for money for this, don’t go the donations route. Checkout veed.io, people are willing to pay money for services like this.

        1. 1

I've seen VEED.io, but the reason I'm hesitant at this point is since the competition out there has significantly more features than I do, it would be hard to justify using Mastershot. In general, the way I see it, charging for an MVP has the very important purpose of gauging whether or not people are interested in your product. With the current competition out there creating similar products, I'm convinced that people are interested in Mastershot, it's just a matter of becoming more competitive.

          1. 2

Stop being afraid and ask for money. You already have something that other's don't. You save bandwidth, privacy. Market those and ask. Hell, charge $1 a year if that will make you feel better till you're ready to charge more. But don't be afraid, us developer types never feel that our product is ready to be charged for, for you, you could build it so it feels simple/"easy". But for most of users, it's an impossible problem they couldn't solve themselves. Best of luck.

          2. 1

I get you, I have the same problem with my product. I will try to differentiate a bit so it serves a different niche than my competitor and I will ask for money.

            1. 1

Why can't money be asked even if it's a small amount?
