Launching indiehackers tv

Last week I decided I wanted to hack on a quick side project. What better to hack on then something for Indie Hackers?

I've seen Indie Hackers posting more video content, some even live streaming the work they are doing on the products.

I like to watch these videos, but finding them is purely random, so I decided to build a tool to find and list these videos and easy to digest way:
https://indiehackers.tv

Obviously doesn't make sense to launch something like this without a video, so here is a quick intro to indiehackers.tv:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wymLW2GRVm8

I wrote about my process for building the site in more detail on my blog:

Would love to know what you think.

  1. 3

Excellent! Will start posting my screencasts here, thanks Mubs!

    1. 1

      Awesome, looking forward to them.

  2. 3

Nice, will bookmark it and check out periodically

  3. 2

Congrats Mubs, I swear I was going to buy that domain like a month ago! You won me!

    1. 1

Haha. I was surprised it was available, figured someone would have just squatted it by now.

  4. 2

I think it's a wonderful idea. I'm creating content targeting technical software founders/indie hackers (combo of tech and marketing) at Semicolon&Sons — I'm up at about 2400 subscribers now (between email and YT) after 4 months so I feel my content could add value to your platform.

How do I submit videos? Is there any semi-automated way? E.g. to provide an RSS feed to your site?

    1. 1

I’ve tried to automate this as much as possible for now.

I’m automatically parsing links from the Indie Hacker discussions, so you just need to post your link to YouTube in a discussion and it should appear in the listing.

This is exciting @mubashariqbal - I'm not good at shooting but I'd definite watch more on your platform!

Really like your thought process and quick launch. Would be awesome to exchange opinions. Let's chat on Twitter?

    1. 1

Cool, for sure my DM’s are open.

  6. 2

This is cool. It will definitely encourage me to post more useful type videos.

I also like how the groups are the categories. 👍

    1. 1

      Thanks Rosie.

When I started I didn't intend on using the Groups I think it turned into a great way to categorize the videos.

  7. 2

@mubashariqbal this is such a good idea and valuable curation for all of us! Thanks. How do you collect those videos? How can we send our content?

I hope I can share my challenge results for https://emailmarketing.club soon. My goal is to earn $1K in 30 days.

    1. 1

The content is automatically found in discussions if you post a link to the youtube video. Later I plan on doing curation and offering more sorting/filtering options.

      1. 2

Does it include comments or not?

        1. 1

          Not at the moment.

The API endpoint I’m using doesn’t not include comments in the results, would make this possible in the future, but not sure when/if this is will happen.

Hey, great work! This is similar in spirit to the project I built forever ago to learn to code, so this personally makes me really happy. :) Nice launch!

    1. 1

Very cool! Definitely not a new idea, but was something fun to build in a weekend :)

  9. 2

I shared over 30 videos on IH but none of them are indexed, how does it work?
    Edit: Found 1 video :D

    1. 1

Can you link me a few of them? Want to make sure my import is working properly.

I haven't gone back an indexed all the posts from the start of the forums yet, figured the more recent stuff would be more useful.

Moving forward anything new should get picked up.

      1. 1

I know why they might not be indexed :) I use a weird markdown where the link is behind a picture ;) must've broken the scraper
here's my channel for reference: https://lf.gg/youtube

        1. 1

Thanks, will investigate and see if I can get them added.

  10. 2

Love this Mubs. Makes sense to have a hub for makers itself because yourself is too messy and not the right medium for us.

Curious to know your plans to make it more maker centric.

But congrats on the launch. As always I admire your ideas and execution :)

    1. 1

      Thanks.

I think there may be a need to add some more manual curation, the groups are interesting, but associating the videos with the maker cycle (ideation, design, dev, marketing, growth, etc.) might make the content more useful.

  11. 2

Cool! I really like it. I love to watch videos of other indiehackers. Thanks for making this.

    1. 1

Cool, glad I'm not the only one :)

  12. 2

    Bookmarked!
I'm also doing a site to discover videos, check it out: https://topicplay.com

    1. 1

That looks great, are you manually curating the videos?

      1. 2

There's also a similar site for HN: Hackernews TV

        1. 1

Oh neat, some ideas to take from there 🤣

      2. 2

Partially. I do the categorization manually. Everyone can submit YouTube channels and they get ranked automatically.

        1. 1

Nice, I'm trying to make this as hands off as possible, but we'll see if manual intervention is needed.

  13. 2

Sweet @mubashariqbal, I can see the value in this. One of the issues I face with video platforms is too much content -- it's hard to know what the 'best' content is, without going through everything. Adding highlights/curated videos would be super handy so that I'm pointed in the right direction of higher quality content. Look forward to following this!

    1. 1

Agreed! I'm hoping to be able to use both the IH and YouTube apis to pull down votes and comment stats on the post/videos to guide the user around what is "best".

  14. 2

Great @mubashariqbal i did something similar years ago with Hackers.tv, i own the domain, if you are interested.

Wonderful idea, and tons of knowledge and insights from Indie Hackers!

    1. 1

Interesting, thanks will keep that in mind.

  15. 2

Hey thanks for the shoutout in your blog post Mubs!

The site is cool! I'll definitely give it a browse.

Also, I'm happy to see you leveraged Algolia fairly easily to tap into the IH search feature! I'm sure I'll eventually be adding Search to Moon using the same method. Would you mind if I reached out to you for some tips when that time comes?

    1. 2

No problem, and yes absolutely, feel free to ping me on Twitter or via email.
