Lead magnets that still work

Lead magnets and drip campaigns

As much as I try to go off of personal experiences with lead magnets and which would be good, it's always harder when you're perspective is from your own product. You believe in your product and yourself so it's easy to forget that not everyone else does as well. They just don't know yet.

Drip campaigns are key to allow visitors to know about you and your expertise as well as your product and how it will benefit them. Eventually, you want them to trust you and your product enough to become paying customers. For any of that to happen, you first need a lead magnet to get the user's email so you can show them the awesome goodness you have to offer.

Things that don't work

There are a few lead magnets that I've encountered that are not very effective:

  • "Sign up for my newsletter": I have enough spam I don't need more
  • "Sign up to learn more": Too vague. What am I learning about? FAQs and an about page should help with that as well
  • "Sign up for 5% off": If the promo is going to be stingy, better not offer anything at all.

Marketing tactics like lead magnets change so much and fast that I think it would be great to hear the community's opinion on which lead magnets still work today. Obviously, not all of them apply for every type of product or business but I think would be great to see what folks think.

If there are some I haven't listed or personal experiences you'd like to share, please do!

Which lead magnet do you think is best?
  1. Checklists
  2. Instructional video
  3. eBook
  4. Promo Code/Coupon

I've tried many different lead magnets. E-books still work, Expert guides do too if you have some pre-established trust. Quizes are surprisingly effective - really anything that's interactive tends to do well.

The best lead magnets though are ones that are specific to the target industry.
E.g. mortgage brokers can use a mortgage calculator (unlock advanced settings by entering email)

Designers can use template/graphics/icon-pack as a lead magnet.

If you are an SEO/marketing agency you can provide free web/SEO audits as a lead magnet and deliver instant value. I built my own tool that does this - seohero.net
