Learning SEO and blogging from Scratch

Hello Everyone,

I'm a software developer aspiring to build products for a living. I'll like to learn about blogging to bring awareness to the products I will build in the nearest future.

Is anyone kind enough to provide me some input for the following:

  1. Low-cost and comprehensive source where I can learn about SEO from top to bottom.

  2. Verified source to learn how to properly blog to optimize for SEO

  3. Should I create my blogging site to take advantage of SEO, utilize a pre-existing blogging platform, or doesn't matter where I start?

  4. This is kind of up in the air, but since I don't have any products or ideas yet, should I build a product first, then blog about it or start blogging about anything to practice and build my skills up?

I appreciate your various inputs on how I can begin learning about SEO and blogging as an indie hacker.

This is a great intro course to SEO, also free:

    https://ahrefs.com/academy/blogging-for-business

I also second the recommendation for Backlinko, though it's probably a bit too much for a beginner. Ahrefs video course is beginner friendly and efficient to go through.

It does not really go much into optimizing a blog for SEO from a technical perspective, it's more about content and link-building.

I'd also give a small plug to my email course on this blogging and SEO for developers:

    https://bloggingfordevs.com

If you want the absolute top-level framework of approaching this. SEO is only a small part of the whole thing though.

Re: blogging first or making a product first, it totally depends. the product can inform the content, or the audience you build via content can inform the product. works both ways. depends if you want to sell an info product that depends a lot on your credibility as a person, or something else where you get users by marketing and then the blog is just one acquisition channel. short answer: there is no one answer :)

Hey Lyomann, I was in your shoes a couple of years ago when I just started out with Digital Marketing. What has been huge authorities for me are:

    • Brian Dean from Backlinko (https://backlinko.com). He will tell you about all the different SEO strategies there are. From creating great content, to do keyword analysis and even creating backlinks to your website.
    • Neil Patel (https://neilpatel.com). In my opinion, Neil Patel gives more beginner kind of information (while Brian Dean also provides more advanced), but still provides really good articles.

By reading a lot of information on SEO (from Brian Dean and Neil Patel), I started my own blog - Chatimize (https://chatimize.com) - where I learn people how to use chatbots in their marketing. It now has scaled to over thousands of users per month (through Google).

Yes, I'm doing the same thing now. I think I should have started sooner BUT spending time on SEO when I wanted to build a good product with just one person its a hard balance.

I think Neil Patel has always great content. The folks at Ahrefs also great.

My site is hopupon.com and the blog is at blog.hopupon.com

I am absolutely convinced that you should always build a following first (be that a blog, or a social media account). when your audience is large enough, ask for feedback regarding whatever you want to build. these will be people who already like you, so they will be candid.
