My Domain Name Portfolio

This was originally going to be a comment on @dqmonn's post (here), but then it got really long, plus I'm not really interested in swapping any of them, so I thought I'd make it into my own brainstorming post!

Ahhh I'm addicted to buying domain names. I'm not sure why, maybe I just love the prospect of them evolving into something big? Unfortunately, because of that, I'm also always hesitant to let them go haha. But here are some of my favorites that I own. Some are/were in-progress, some are just an idea on a piece of paper in a notebook somewhere.

Now that it's so easy to make really nice landing pages for cheap, I should probably start doing that and validate the product idea. If any inspire you, hit me up in the comments, I would love to work together on any of them...

AcquireSaas.com
A micro-acquire service inspired by (formerly) 1kprojects.com. Almost went back to building this after getting really inspired by @dru_riley's "Micro Private Equity" report.

bo.tt
Played around with building a landing page chatbot builder similar to Landbot.io but with more of a Zapier feel.

casts.co
A curated Youtube/Podcast network of high quality, educational/professional content.

eLeaguer.com
I've been wanting to get into the eSports, and this was going to be my "league and tournament builder and tracking" software.

IntroToCoding.com
I wanted to teach others to code! I should probably take some time to actually do this, it would be a nice way to share what I know. I also own NewPodcaster.com that I had similar aspirations for. I also owned react.dev for like 5 minutes until Facebook strong-armed it away from me just to have it go unused.

MarsOasis.org
I really want to start a fundraising campaign that eventually partners with Elon Musk to send mini-greenhouses to Mars!

sha.rs
I wanted to build a URL shortener service for use in my other projects so I could track link clicks. Ended up just buying a PHP script from Envato, but never really got past that. Just really love the short domain name.

Trusting.co
This one is actually (sort of) in progress, but it's very new. Working with two of my lawyer friends to create an electronic "Will & Trust" service so your loved ones have to go through less trouble after you pass away.

yall.wtf
I really want to make a site of curated Tweets/images/headlines of insane (but true) content that sounds like it should be on The Onion.

... and like 50 others that I'm less interested in haha

Like I said above, I should probably make more of an effort to team up with people and execute on these rather than just dreaming about it and paying an annual fee to keep them. I need to find more motivated, techie friends.

Anyone want to collab or invest? 🤔

  1. 6

    I own https://solohackers.com

Don't have any plans to develop it right now and can let it go if anyone is interested

    1. 3

That's a good domain I was thinking this could be used to build a small platform to hire ethical hackers

    2. 2

      Thats a good domain name.

  2. 5

My first domain / email was "[email protected]". I never should have let that go.

And I wish I had had the time to build out AmateurDiagnosis.com - basically, people upload photos and non-doctors give their diagnoses. Ha!

I think eLeaguer is promising. Good name and eSports is going to be HUGE in the coming years (imo).

    1. 5

😂 upyourbuttandaroundthecorner.com may be the best domain name I've ever seen

      1. 1

It's a good one. Also kind of awkward when talking to a customer support person.

        1. 2

Haha one time I was on the phone with customer support trying to cancel an account and she says, "can I have the account email?" and I had to say, "Sure, it's [email protected]" haha. Love the awkwardness of that gmail feature.

          1. 2

Relatable. I had a call with Time Warner Cable and my username was twcusuk

  3. 3

Please someone explain to me why your first step is to buy a domain name??

I have tons of ideas that evolve over time and make me want to change the name later. I also do not know early on if I am fully committed to the idea, so I don't jump into buying a domain until much much later. In the meantime I subdomain tons of stuff and then if the idea pick up some steam I can always add a domain and do transfer in search console.

    1. 3

I wish I knew. Like I said, I think I'm addicted. Maybe this post is my cry for help? haha

It's probably because there are only so many hours in the day, and it's easier to at least fantasize about projects if we don't have the time to build them.

      1. 1

Thanks for replying! I have always wondered this and I wasn't sure if there was some hidden benefit I was missing.

  4. 3

Those are mostly projects! You should be proud of yourself. For me, I've got a lot of domains that are just sitting there with nothing or plain simply being listed on BrandPa. Like these below:

    stackcombo.com
    ecleps.com
    profitely.com
    revdroid.com
    logozum.com
    taxibeeper.com
    vectorcontest.com
    lowcostly.com
    bestcanon.com

    Crazy portfolio, I know.

  5. 3

    Nice list!

    Here are some of mine:

    1. 3

Nice! I like these a lot

  6. 2

    Hi @schoon,

You are not the only one :)

My Domains and neglected side project list,

    getBaboon.com
    BookBibo.com // Booking App..
    VersionHelp.com
    ReactDude.com
Commit.fun // planned for open git search tool
    WatermarkAPI.com

    # Partly worked or neglected projects

    HDRainbow.com thousands of visitors
    markdown.site
    Stringify.me opensource dev profile pages
    Write.WTF Write.Whatever-The-F*ck, Simple anonymous writing

    1. 3

Wow I really like some of these. Specifically stringify.me sounds like it could be a cool developer network.

    2. 1

markdown.site triggers an idea of mine too! I might post it up, tag you in it and see if you are interested in taking the page any further.

      1. 1

I am not doing much on the markdown.site
What is your site? or plan on your idea?

    1. 1

You have a nice eye for domains!

You should redirect tele.vision to HBO Max for a day, lol.

      1. 1

        Thanks

I did the redirect, just until I think of a better plan for it tele.vision 📺😃

        1. 1

          That's very cool, thanks!

          It's not TV. It's Tele.vision 😂

  7. 2

I have a few, but my pride and joy are:

    dechonker.com
    oldtaco.com

    Just because I like them.

And I am going to use oldtaco, hopefully in a month or so at the latest

    1. 2

Haha I love the sound of oldtaco.com... What are you going to do with it?

  8. 1

Hi Dan, I was facing this exact issue and turned it around into (yet another!) domain name + sideproject. https://kickstart.dev is purposely built to go from domain name into sideproject in the quickest and most convenient way.
So, email, analytics, mailing list, landing page, etc can all be setup through a few clicks. Also includes scoring and categorizing your domain names/ideas.

If that sounds interesting to you I can give you a coupon for a free 1 year plan?
Really curious to see if it will help you (and get some feedback in the process of course :)

  9. 1

    I own HackersValley.com :)

and yes I understand your issue, you are not alone lol

  10. 1

I see I'm not the only one :D
I have a bunch of domain names too, sometimes they expire before I ever build anything.
I recently bought accentpreneur dot com, for interviews of founders with ... an accent.
I also have cheapreneur, I wanted to make a curated list of free tools.

    1. 1

😂 yea, it's the worst when they expire without you ever even using them... I swear, domain name registration addiction is a real problem! haha

I really like cheapreneur ... You should create a list like I recently did for podcasters with CasterKit.

      1. 1

What did you use to build casterkit?

        1. 2

It's using @ccummings new Liist.io tool. Then I just need to organize everything in a Google Sheet. It's great.

          1. 1

I just signed up for early access. Hope to hear from @ccummings soon :)

          2. 1

            Wow, this is perfect Dan.
I've been looking for something like for a free no-code template gallery, this does the job.
            Thanks :)

Personally I think there is a special place in hell for domain name hoarders. They are the vampires of the online ecosystem.

They add zero value to the marketplace.

That being said, the first thing I do when coming up with a new idea is to purchase a suitable 'go-to' domain name if ones available.

Building an MVP around a product and establishing a user base is too risky. Just to have someone snatch the domain name from you. I usually let the domain expire though after a year, if I don't use it.

    1. 3

Ironically, I completely agree with you. I really want to buy Clipps.com for my Clip.ps podcast site. I even offered the guy $3k for it. He laughed at me and said "I received an offer for it a few years ago, so I know there's interest. Because of that, I can't accept less than 5 figures". So I guess it will just sit there, completely unused.

I really wanted to respond with some shit talking, but who knows, maybe down the road I'll be able to afford that and don't want to mess up the relationship.

Update: Oh damn, looks like he's messing with me haha. The domain name now forwards to a YouTube video titled "Does the domain name you want to buy cost to much?" haha. What is happening? Life has to be a simulation.

        1. 2

Thanks! At the time I did too, especially since it's so short. But I'm also a techie nerd and I like this unconventional approach.

Unfortunately, once you have to spell out the URL to people a hundred times it gets a little old. Although I guess I'd have the same problem spelling c-l-i-p-p-s.com too.

          1. 1

Yes maybe spelling out the URL is difficult.
Just fyi I have a web app https://www.Watermark.ink
Its very popular and doing good on google SEO too. Notice the domain is not .com its a .ink domain.

  12. 1

damn you got intro to coding? you should buy plantmom.com... The next dc brand and I'll build a no-code prototype 🤣

    1. 1

I may down to invest if you build it!
