My micro-business got its 1st investment! 💥🥳

I got an investment!

I secured my first investment 5 months after starting my micro-business Signals.

Signals is a weekly business trends newsletter with 2,500+ subscribers. I've been writing and bootstrapping it purely as a solo founder since the beginning (Dec 2020).

I wasn't really actively seeking for an investor, but then @snowpine reached out via a cold Twitter DM.

We started exchanging emails and quite soon I found out that he had a unique vision of what Signals could evolve to be.

Furthermore, he had built a business to a $2 million exit before and another company to $60k/mo in revenue. Currently he is building a micro-business portfolio firm called Atticus investing in businesses making up to $5k/MRR.

The vision part was important for me. Extra cash is always nice but far more importantly this was my chance to get a real mentor/partner with solid experience onboard.

Yes, I'll be giving away equity but then again I think adding someone with this kind of experience onboard is highly net positive: we are incentivized to grow the pie together and get the best possible outcome.

How big was the investment?

While not revealing the exact sum, I can say it was in the $1k - $10k range.

What's up next?

Immediately we're not making any major changes, but tweaking the content and trying to create new growth.

In the long term we're planning on revamping the entire content process to focus on helping future founders find and execute on opportunities.

The end vision is to build the bible on building, launching, growing, monetizing, automating, and exiting a business.

What did you learn from this?

I learnt that you should open-mindedly start stuff and see where it leads! If someone would have told me 5 months ago I'll be getting an investor onboard in May 2021 I would have called them crazy!

Just start. You'll never know where you end up.

And the beauty of indie hacking is that you can do it all by yourself, from the comfort of your own laptop.

Excited for the future and what it brings! Let me know if you have any questions.

P.S. It's always good to maximize your chances of startup success by getting the weekly trend reports from Signals 😉

Thanks! Yes, exactly, the most important step by far is just start things and try them out :) And see what catches on.

Congrats! At the beginning small investments can have amazing returns. For us a very small investment made the difference between having one half-assed product and having a full collection of full-assed-awesome-tm* products. Micro-investments can make a big difference! Now make every cent count!

Exactly! I'm excited that you don't have to aim to be a unicorn anymore to get some funding :)

Congrats! Mind sharing what and how much the investor got in return? (equity etc?)

This question is critical -- was this $Xk in exchange for 1% of the business, or 25%? Impossible to know if this is good news (congrats if so!) or a salvage report for a failed project (my condolences, if so) without the other half of the transaction.

As I see it, I'm only 5 months in and still in the very early stages.

Having a credible investor/mentor is probably only going to give me a chance to grow it bigger than would have been possible alone.

For example: 75% of $100k is a whole lot better than 100% of $1k :)

Nice job! Party on, party on! 🎉

Congrats this is inspiring... How did you grow the newsletter to gain subs?

    1. 2

Mainly writing here on IH, Twitter, Reddit, LinkedIn.

A few paid ads as well, some of which did quite well for the money spent.

  10. 2

Congratulations. Wish more success to you in the coming future. Us

Congratulations! Wish you all the success down the road!

How did you get your customers? Any paid marketing? Any agency? Which socials? So many questions!

    1. 2

The paid subscribers I have (around 40-50) have come through the weekly free newsletter, writing regularly here on IH and Twitter.

I have not used any agencies (as said, I'm bootstrapping all the way).

Some paid ads, but they've been more of experimenting than any consistent effort.

      1. 2

Can I ask how you got the 2,500 founders?

        1. 2

Posting good content and collecting emails from interested readers :)
