People are clicking our “Sign Up” button, but not actually signing up. How come?

While building our product, Phlywheel, we’ve realized that visitors to the site are clicking the “Sign up” button, but then they don’t actually sign up.

The reason for this may be because the “Sign Up” button takes them to our Mighty Networks (our hosting site) landing page.

We’re not sure if this is what is turning off potential customers, but it certainly seems like it.

Fellow IndieHackers, if you have some time, can you offer some feedback on this conundrum?

The "Sign Up" button is on the top right of this page: https://www.phlywheel.com/

I clicked signup and expected to see a sign up form, instead it went to a new page which I didn't like. also it took a few seconds to load which I then noticed was due to It going to the new subdomain which effected my journey significantly. Hope this helps

Thanks for the feedback! We're changing the page up so it takes you directly to a membership plan.

I love these threads so I made a video explanation of what I think it's wrong

Nice one dude! This is so meta haha

    2. 1

Thanks for making a video about it! Our hands are a little tied with what we can do with the landing page due to Mighty Networks options. We'd like to put the pricing tiers at the top but they don't allow that unfortunately :(

When I click on Signup, I expect a form - not what you currently have. I have never seen anything like this. You are making it hard for users to signup.
Refer to https://dashboard.stripe.com/register if you need insipiration.

Thanks for the feedback. We are making some adjustments!

      ;) you learned fast!

    This was my journey.. FWIW.

Clicked on Signup (Noticed that the menu changed and it seemed for a second I had been taken to another site)

Lots of content on the new page (hero section, marketing blades, video etc..)

But I could not see the plan immediately. I did see the button to Choose a Plan.. but I expected to be doing that now.. not another click. Consider showing me the plan first, then the supporting material?

Clicking on the Choose plan in the hero section.. scrolls me down the page.

I now have a floating header with the button I just clicked?
and i am still not focused on the plans.. I am seeing the Keep Up With.. content and then the plans under that? I would expect the plan to be in full view. this is the thing I should be acting on now.

Then the plans... all three look similar, it is hard to quickly grasp what the differences are.

    Which is the most popular?

There are three different options within the options (Try free, Subscribe, Choose)

So lots of clicking to figure it all out.

    Hope that helps

    1. 1

This is very helpful, thanks. In terms of the plans, what information would you like to see right off the bat?

      1. 2

Simple bullet list. It makes it easier for me to compare plan to plan.

Every button is the same size and colour.. Which one do you actually want me to click on?

There are lots of design concepts on the site.

Floating header, side load content.. lots of moving parts for what I think could be simplified.

I would start with trying the plans at the top of the page.

Then tweak them to have something other than price be the difference.

I think the More Details could load on the page and not in a modal to the side.. not sure of the value there? I cant do anything with the content under it anyway? so why not scroll down the original page?

        1. 1

We don't have too much configurability with our hosting platform unfortunately. It's either send them to that landing page or send them to one of our membership plans (Catalyst plan, it's 1 of 3 and our most popular). Would you prefer the current landing page or one of our membership plans?

          1. 3

One quick option might be to simply redirect the root domain to the second landing page at the "my." subdomain. I agree the double landing page is a bit unusual -- overlapping content, extra decision point for abandonment, etc.

          2. 2

If your tool is that limiting maybe you are using the wrong tool for the job. You might want to look at alternatives. Especially if it is costing you sales.

          3. 2

Once I am on the Plan page.. I cant actually figure out how to get back to the site.

I think if possible, try and get those plans to the top of the page.

    Too many clicks.

When I click on "Sign Up", I should end up on a price page with CTAs ideally. You are taking me to another landing page and then again I have to click a CTA to go to the Pricing Table section and then again I have to finally select a Plan.

Why do you have the separate landing page called my.phlywheel.com ?

We have to use the landing page, it's the way our hosting platform operates :(

  6. 2

They get to that sign up page without even knowing what each course is about.

Instead of making a big ass list of courses why not just say is "everything they need to know about X?"

Also anchoring the price to time or money saved helps sell the value more.

My last tip would be that you need to remind them that they will be trying it for free for 30 days not paying right now.

    Hope it helps @Maxsper :)

Agree to the comments of the others.

Some points on top: On the mobile version, I did not find the sign up button but at the very bottom of the page (at least include it in your menu). But: Sign up at the bottom is the newsletter sign up, the "sign up" CTA is the "join now" here. Think of better differentiating NL sign up and product sign up.

Since I'm redirected to a new page, I get the cookie banner again (annoying), on top, it's in a completely different format.

Order of your plans seems random, is there a specific reason for the 39-19-149 order? Users have a tendency to the middle, so if Catalyst is your hero plan, put it in the middle and highlight it as your hero.

Way too much info on the page, e.g.: why do you push the app download at this point in the journey? Does it provide any value for non registered users?

(If you want to keep the app: why not directly prompt the link to the app stores in the mobile version more prominently instead of asking for the mobile number? And think of adding a note like "your mobile number will only be used to send you the download link, it will not be used for marketing" (assuming this is the case). In a registration flow of one of my customers, this little step increased the conversion rate by 20%!). Alternative: show QR code to app store for desktop users instead of asking for mobile number.)

Think of putting the user creation with email/password way earlier in the process, even before selecting a price plan. This way, you get the data and you're able to start communicating and "nurture" the users to complete the registration.

    1. 1

Unfortunately, our hosting platform forces us to order the page as you see. We're working on changing the page entirely

  8. 2

To echo what others have said, I missed the "choose a plan" button and got lost in the experience. There's a lot on that page that takes visual precedence over this action.

  9. 2

When you click sign up, you expect to be taken to a form to create an account. But you take me to a new unrelated page with "sign in" and "choose plan"? Very confusing and I am lost to what I am supposed to do next. It wasn't written anywhere that I have to choose a plan right away, and the pricing options are very confusing (in my opinion). "Try free" but "starting at 39.99"? Which one is it? Am I going to have a trial if I sign up? I don't want to commit to such a high pricing right away, especially when I didn't have the chance to take a look at the product first.

  10. 2

Sometimes people just want to see how's the sign up / onboarding looks like. The potential churn would be caused by either asking for too many info etc

  11. 2

Way too many clicks to get to signup, Id throw your plans on the landing page where users will notice and have an a tag that the signup button brings the user down too with some form of animation. Then the user clicks one of the options and is presented a signup form and feels like they did less than the amount of steps before.

  12. 2

You're making the users click two buttons to convert. You're having them click two buttons to convert. They shouldn't have to click "Choose a Plan" again to get to where you want them to go. You should take them right there.

  13. 2

I found that the sign up button took me to the top of this page: https://my.phlywheel.com/ which has a lot of info on it and I needed to scroll to the bottom to see the plans. Ideally I think that it would be best to go direct to a page with just a form on it where you can enter your details to sign up and maybe have a separate link to view plans on it's own page too. This way you'll be able to follow the flow in analytics and see where people are leaving.

    1. 2

Good to know, thanks for the feedback. Mighty Networks, our hosting platform, doesn't allow too much configurability unfortunately, so we can't change the landing page too much. What might make the most sense is to just send them to our Catalyst membership plan (it's our most popular). What do you think of that?

You can also see all of our pricing here: https://www.phlywheel.com/pricing/

      1. 2

The pricing page is good and I agree going direct to the most popular plan would be better.

  14. 2

    'SIGN UP' action not working.

    1. 2

Hey @Abishek_Muthian! Could you also let us know:

      1. which platform you're on
      2. which browser you're using
      3. the version of the browser/ios?

Perhaps there's an issue with the buttons and browsers?

If you have any other plugins that block anything...that would be helpful, too!

      1. 1

Sorry, that's an operational security hazard. I think the issue is pop-up blocker, check my other comment to your colleague.

    2. 1

Thanks for the help. Can you clarify a bit more? Where did the button take you?

      1. 2

Now where, no console errors w.r.t to this. The Elementor pop action doesn't work even after disabling ad-blocker, but the issue is likely built-in pop-up blocker in the browser.

But intriguingly, the href URL when clicked inside the inspect window loads the popup within that console window in my browser(Perhaps a quirk with my browser, I don't wish to name for security reasons).

But judging from your statements, it seems like your visitors are just facing issues with the pop-up blockers. Test with different browsers, perhaps do away with pop-up completely and replace it with navigation to a static segment at the bottom.

Edit: built-in pop-up blocker in the browser.

        1. 1

Ahh ok thanks for the feedback! We'll do some testing.

  15. 1

why not use signup with google?

    1. 1

Our hosting platform doesn't allow that unfortunately :(

  16. 1

Had a hard time even finding it... it doesn't show if you do half width window...
You have so many sign up buttons that all do different thing.
A top sign up button is usually for free accounts, and only asks for an email and password possibly or social logins...
Your signup is going to a 2nd sales page,
That page looks nothing a like in a way, feels a bit like bait and switch / affiliate/ wrong link / click...
When I say nothing a like, while I can think and find the resemblance, even your logo is not the same. The name on the main title isn't there, the title on the page isn't. The button style isn't.. top menu.. 95% says you'r not in the same place/site anymore.
And again even if I was, I expected a simple form, not a sales page, not to pay, make pay decisions...

    1. 1

Our hosting site, Mighty Networks, forces us to order the page the way it is. Not a lot of design freedom either.

      1. 2

It's your business, if your provider doesn't provide what you need, it's your choice to change it.

We're making some design changes and seeing what we can do with the landing page. Unfortunately, our hosting platform is a little inflexible
