Personal websites or portfolios - what do you use?

I'm starting to build up my career in SaaS marketing with AppGyver, and want to highlight my achievements in an effective way. I've also done freelance writing here and there, and have random side projects going on that I want to showcase. What have you used to make a personal page or portfolio? Specific hosting plans, website builders, etc. Anyone care to share their own as an example?

Building a personal website is not as easy as it seems. Apart from the tech part, unless it's part of a consistent promotional activity, it will just be invisible. In my opinion, it's worth only for a major and ongoing aspect of your online presence. I've done it only for my writings or my products.
I recommend using simple portfolio tools (or website builders).
Squarespace is a common premium website builder. Not cheap, but I tried it and it would be my choice (I'm with a self-hosted Wordpress for all of my sites, but I don't recommend it unless you want to spend weeks on it).
Else, I'd go with a publication on Medium (I run a few of them). Not ideal as a website, but it's inside a wide community and near-to-zero setup effort.
The best is to keep your profile inside communities, picking one or more relevant to your goals (from the "audience" perspective or from "peers" perspective, like IH). Not the best on the "presentation" part, but the way to go for connections and visibility. Once you have a solid and consistent line of content you can certainly think about a website.

Thanks @wilcobis that is a valid point. I spent a couple weeks building a Wix site previously and then realized no one was looking at it! I'm currently maintaining my Medium page, so maybe that will be a short term solution.

You're welcome! @MargoGantner - are you also building stuff with Notion? Let's exchange opinions on Twitter :) My link in profile

You know there is a way to attach a domain to notion pages?

      1. 1

Yes I did. Nothing sure if you read my second site.

I use Notion for rosie.land and rosiesherry.com. I still have work to do on them and it's far from a perfect tool, but it works for me.

I just code it on my own - braydentw.github.io

I also made a modern portfolio template a few weeks ago. I recommend you check it out

Just was about to post about this topic myself but saw already covered. Interesting to see how things have changed since 2020.

We use carrd.co to serve as a portfolio/gallery for happylittlepixels.io. Set up takes 1-2 hours.

However it is only really designed to showcase images/photos.

If each project in your portfolio necessitates it's own page, then i recommend squarespace. Set up will take 6+ hours. More if you want things to be just right.

I'm a Gatsby fan as well since I write React Native for my day job https://www.brianatiyeh.com

Just finished mine - static site with Bootstrap and Sass hosted on Netlify - https://www.timjones.me.

It's my first time using Netlify and I loved how easy it was to set up.

I also set up free email with my domain in Gmail using ImprovMX, following the advice here - https://twitter.com/chris__alarcon/status/1283102457925697546?s=20.

Check out http://notion.com/ or https://carrd.co/ for an easy and cheap solution.

Personally, I code my own using Gatsby and host on Netlify. But I'm offering web development services, so it makes more sense to put in the extra effort to code something more unique.

    My sites:

I used NextJS to make my portfolio page. I am hosting via Vercel (Used to be Zeit). The CMS is Prismic.io with GraphQL to consume. Here is a link to the blog https://mpierce.blog!

I'm using a Gatsby site deployed on Netlify! diegodlt.info

OMG! This is the ethernal question I'm always asking myself. You can use your product as a part of your portfolio, that means like your personal page.
For example we have https://cashout.games as my boyfriend and me brand 😊

As a designer, I've tried most of the website builders out there. I've found Wordpress with themes to be the best and most flexible. It doesn't look so cookie-cutter like square space and others. You can really find a unique theme to showcase your work and style with no code knowledge. My site is on that at the moment: https://masonbwatson.com

Built a system on my own cause I didn't like any of the popular ones and coincidentally open sourced it not too long ago: http://rorigami.site

Carrd for personal website, customized Bootstrap theme for my landing page.

I use Squarespace for my personal website. For the time being I put it together quickly when migrating from another site builder, so I'll probably work on it more.

Although Squarespace supports portfolio templates, my site isn't structured as a portfolio.

    For hosting I recommend Netlify.com

Hi Esmeé, I use Webflow for my personal website: https://en.studiolars.nl/ and for some of my clients. The Webflow community is HUGE! and there are loads of templates to get you started. It is nice to know a little bit about how website are build, you don't have to write html/css/js but it can help if you know the structure of a website.
Also the hosting is just super easy to setup and your website will automatically have a SSL certificate.
