Planning is not guessing, planning is training

I've spent some time thinking about planning. There was one thing that has always bugged me about the idea of planning. Pretty much everyone thinks planning is guessing.

And to some extent it is. You need to do something, you guess the steps, write them down, and viola the plan.

Planning is also about timing things or rather figuring out how long will something take. And to some extent it is. You have a list of steps, you know roughly how long each step should take and you can ascertain how long it will take to complete the plan.

But, I think planning is most useful because it trains you how to do something. The more you plan, the better you are at doing. It's similar to what athletes go through when they imagine themselves scoring goals, getting past opposing players, etc. They are planning their moves, their tactics.

Those plans rarely go to plan but because they do it so often, their minds are ready to respond to anything.

So planning is training. I think.

I wrote a more in-depth discussion on this. Check it out if you like.
