Podcast and Audiobook notes app idea

We all listen to a ton of audio content, but how much do we actually remember?

As i'm listening to audio content, I want to be able to quickly take notes while doing other things. When I hear something I like, I want to press a single button and save a clip of the previous 15 seconds of audio. Later, I want to see a list of all of these clips, be able to adjust the start/stop position to only the good bits, and listen to a playlist of my clips. This could condense whole audiobooks into 5-10 minutes, or podcasts into just a few seconds. This would be great for quickly revisiting all the interesting ideas I've heard in the past.

What do you think?
Does this already exist? (I hope so...)
Are there legal reasons this wouldn't work?

I like the idea so much, I'm building it!

I've wanted something like this for years and got tired of waiting for someone else to make the product I wanted to use, so a couple months ago a friend and I started building a prototype in our free time. Like the lousy indiehackers we are, we do not have a landing page , explainer, blog, or anything to validate interest in the idea. We knew what we wanted so we're just building that. We've been having a few conversations with folks who express similar interests to help refine our MVP but for now our focus is MVP first, then get it into the world and get feedback.

As for similar products, I've got several in my research notes. If you have found others please add them!

    • https://www.notecast.app/ this one is a whole podcatcher with an emphasis on note taking
    • https://www.podclipper.com/ this one seems geared toward podcasters who want a way to showcase sections of their episodes by providing HTML embedable transcript widgets.
    • https://podcastbookmarks.com/ this one is an iOS shortcut app add-on that only works with OverCast at the moment but allows hands free creation of notes via Siri.
    • https://huffduffer.com/ this one seems to be more about curating and sharing podcast snippets than about note taking or research for personal reference.
    • https://nota.fm/ is another full blown podcatcher with an emphasis on extra content both from the podcasters and annotations / sharing by listeners

With all these options out there we still feel that building our own solution is worth while as none of them tick all the boxes we want, which are similar to the ones you mentioned. Specifically we're aiming to provide the audio bookmarking / clip creation you described for personal reference / knowledge capture (although your supercut-of-snippets idea is new to me!) while also transcribing the audio excerpts into searchable notes. We are also building tight integration with the most popular podcatcher apps for input and note taking apps for output. We feel that people already have strong preferences for both podcatching and note taking apps and we don't want to make people choose ( or try to be the best podcatcher / notes app, too much expertise there already! ) so we intend to create a space for ourselves between them to provide value.

Happy to talk more about these ideas and where we're heading or if you just want to get in on some alpha testing when we're ready we'd be very glad to have your feedback. Hit me up: [email protected]
