“Product market fit” is a silly term for what it wants to describe

I've never been a fan of defining product market fit as "explosive growth." I'm not sure why that caught on. You need product market fit in order to achieve explosive growth, but they're not the same thing.

My favorite breakdown of product market fit comes from Brian Balfour. He describes it exactly like it sounds when your product perfectly fits market needs.

More importantly, he explains that there are three other "fits" that are crucial to achieving explosive growth. And his model for explaining it is very simple and easy to remember. It's ingrained into my head, and I automatically think of it whenever I'm assessing a business idea. Easily one of the most useful series of blog posts I've ever read.

i take the peter thiel approach: there can only be one. meaning, only one product really will have fundamental PMF... all the rest are vying for the scraps or trying to dethrone and incumbent. to do this, usually (but not always), (explosive) growth is a necessary ingredient so as to surprise, shock, and overwhelm an incumbent.... as well as to deter and demoralize would-be competitors.
