Real reason of why you shouldn’t use your phone when you wake up 🤷‍♂️

Did the title of this post remind you of your parents shouting from the other room, telling you to leave behind your phones for at least one hour?

One hour? AHH!! I know. Too tough. But they aren’t wrong, you know.

Scrolling through Instagram or checking the news first thing in the morning takes your mind from that calm state to the anxious or overwhelming state.

What could be worse than starting your day with the headline, “There’s a possibility of a new variant of virus”? Ugh. More masks and more restrictions.

While you might not notice any difference, reading something like this can actually put your body into "stress mode" and keep it in the same state throughout the whole day.

Not only that, by checking your social media or messaging the first thing in the morning, your thoughts, ideas, and focus are hijacked by other people’s agendas. Instead of proactively starting your day with a focus on your goals, you’re just reacting to other people’s stuff.

What’s even worse is that scrolling through social media or checking your messages leads your brain to release dopamine - a neurochemical that makes you feel rewarded. The brain starts craving this dopamine and as a result, your brain will encourage you to repeat this behavior throughout the day.

Aka a day full of distractions.

So it might finally be time to listen to your parents’ advice and let your phone sleep for an hour more than you do.

What does your morning routine look like?

Love,
Siddhita ❤️

I love it @siddhitaupare! Thanks for this much needed reminder of the importance of staying focused. I'm also a big fan of your todo app, keep up the good work 💪

I usually take a first look at my phone about 1.5 hours after waking up. Right when I wake up, I take a 1h walk in nature, to set my circadian rhythm, reset my eyesight, get some blood flow, and a peaceful morning.

Once I got my coffee made after that, I check my notifications on my terms 🤩

Excellent post Siddhita! I love it.

I've recognized the same thing. I haven't been able to describe it as eloquently and scientifically to myself as you though, and it's very helpful for me that you have.

I don't even engage with the world at all, to the degree that I can, until I've finished my morning meditation and reading.

I've also noticed the same as you - start your day with distraction, and you will be a slave of distraction the entire day, coming in the forms of mindless internet browsing, eating as disctraction/entertainment, etc

Your every word precisely fits my morning routine, I am going to change this bad habit from tommorow only!

Thank you @siddhitaupare for this good post.
