🔥Roast my App Icon🔥-> And i will roast yours

Having a good and eye-catching App Icon is important for app-marketing.

I have often heard that the App Icon for my App FAST - Calorie Counter is not convincing enough. Also some people told me that they don't understand what my app is for when they only see the icon. What do you think? Should I invest in a new App Icon?

Post your app icon in the comments and i will give you feedback!

What do you think about my App Icon?

Honestly I thought the icon was for some restaurant/menu app/site. It did not strike me as a calorie counter.

And this is a personal thing but I think the icon looks a little dated. It reminds me of iOS apps from 5-10 years ago. With the trend in flat icons you might want to experiment with that.

Thanks for your honest feedback :) I think the result of the survey is clear and I will take care of a new icon.

Red and green? What is this a Christmas app?

It looks like basically two images were mashed together. The colors contrast to the point where it hurts my brain to stare at it for long periods of time.

I would have guessed it was a book of Christmas recipes of some sort.

Just curious, how much time was actually spent on coming up with this?

There is a long story behind this icon. My app is already 5 years old. I came up with this icon idea around 2015. I didn't think much about it but simply painted a book with cutlery on it in the graphics program of my choice. It should represent a "nutrition diary". It looked terrible!!!!

Then in 2019 I hired a graphic designer on Fiverr to redo this icon from 2015 but it should look more professional. And this is the result.

So in summary: I have never really dealt with the icon. Time expenditure maybe 1 hour in 5 years. The money for the graphic designer hurts me more.

One more reason to tackle the topic now and make it better :)

My first thought when I looked at the icon was also Some sort of recipe app, imo there needs to be some sort of connection to calorie counting, how you would visualise that though is the hard bit I guess ;).

Hey @OPunktSchmidt the new icons are much improved. It's been just over a year now, what ever happened to this project?

  5. 1

@OPunktSchmidt - the red color is way too bright and the diary is too common to use. At a first glance, I would believe this is an app that might turn out to be a scam or an app that has too many ads and tries to lure customers into sharing data.

Just being honest here, of course.

Take a look at my product at ruttl.com. I would love to hear your thoughts as well.

    Cheers!

Hey! The book part of the icon looks well-enough designed. I don't like the bookmark part - it seems like it's just hanging out of nowhere, maybe add some subtle pages gap shadow to make it more real.

The fork&knife part look very generic and don't really show that it's a calorie counter app - I would still play with the book cover illustration to make it more obvious from the icon what you app does!

Hi, If you hadn’t explained what it was I would have said it was some kind of restaurant directory or something. When I look at the icon the colours don’t stand out, very pastel colours and in general its trying to say too much. Sometimes it doesn’t even need to say anything, it just has to have a clear clean branding to it that easily identifies the product. Thats my opinion at least.

My proposal is that you play with less forms and use colours that stand out but play well together, something Fresh that immediately identifies health, sport, calories, counting. Sometimes you can also break the rules and use colours that are completely the oposite to what you would expect, but there must be a why behind your decision. For example green is normally used for nature, but sometimes you can use yellow or even blue, as long as the icon, symbol, letter or word reflects what you are trying to say.

This is my icon for keepsy.app. I tried to use fresh colours and a simple form that clearly identifies the brand. I thought that was more important than trying to explain what Keepsy does in in one icon. Funnily enough I even used the same similar apple icon structure for the actual company logo on my website. Feel free to roast my icon, any feedback is much appreciated.

    Thanks

Thank you for an honest and, above all, detailed feedback!

I find your statement interesting "Sometimes it doesn’t even need to say anything". I think you have to see that from several angles. If you succeed in building a strong brand and community around your product, then I fully agree with you. If your users know your product from other channels outside the App Store, it is important that they can clearly recognize your brand.

From the point of view of ASO (App Store Optimization) I might not agree 100%. If your app is still unknown and users scroll through the App Store search results, the icon is the first thing they notice. Personally, I might not be inclined to click on your app in the search results because I'm not sure at first if the app is relevant to the problem I'm looking for.

But I think that also depends on the kind of app. For a calorie counter app the branding might not be as important as for your app. Your app solves a problem where people might take more time to find a solution and maybe search for it outside the App Store. With a calorie counter app, people take less time and simply download the first best app that seems to do the job.

But I still think your icon is great! I really like the color combination and it has a high brand recognition value. Did you create it yourself or hire a designer?

Just going by the icon alone I think it's a recipe app. I think a calculator with the buttons (numbers) being food icons would be a better visual representation.

I also think the design is outdated and of low quality (the book bind is not visually correct), most icons these days are more flat.

    1. 1

The idea with the calculator is great. I will try it. Thank you.

I don't have an app, but I'd love to give you my opinion:

    • It is very skeuomorphic. Like Apple in the early 2000s. Try to make it more modern and simple like they do now. Use Apple's Big Sur icons as an inspiration.
    • The colors aren't great. Red is a great color for food apps but it should be the main color. Not just a smaller part
    • I don't think a book is the best idea. Maybe something more like a calculator or something like that :-)

Could you give some feedback on my logo for my website BuildFaster.co?

Thanks for your honest feedback :) I just hired a Designer on Fiverr. I will test different new Icons in an A/B Test. Here is your feedback:

      • I like the idea of your icon as it shows an HTML - End Tag. This fits the topic
      • The colors fit well with the rest of the website and stand out
      • I can't really say anything negative. As a visitor to your site, it is immediately clear to me which topic it is about when I see your icon. Of course you need technical knowledge to understand your icon but your target audience should have that.

        Thanks :)

I wanted to make sure I wasn’t misleading anyone.

The obvious stock vector cutlery is throwing me off. It doesn't fit with the rest of your design. It's too flat when paired with the skeumorphic book, IMO.

It might also be a tad big on the home screen. I could be convinced either way on that I think.

      Thanks for your feedback :)

Great idea! What do you think of this?

    Some suggestions regarding your icon:

    • I would use a different image for a calorie counter. Most people would use your app to lose weight or as part of their fintess routine. So I would use a postive image associated with that.
    • The pink and the background have too much contrast, causing the knife and fork to "vibrate" visually
    • You are using skeumorphism, which mobile design has moved away from. This may cause users to assume that your app is old and hasn't been updated.

Sorry for the delay I was a bit busy. Here is your feedback:

Basically I like your icon. It conveys the purpose of your app. But if I could give you some advice on another subject: Your screenshots look a bit boring. I think you can convince more users to download your app with better screenshots. Something like this: https://hotpot.ai/designs/thumbnails/app-store-panorama/22.jpg

Thanks, yes, I was thinking the same thing. Need to redo my screenshots.

Thanks for your feedback. I will back to you tomorrow with a feedback for your icon :)

The color palette looks like from 5-7 years ago. So if you like it to look modern, I think you want to change it. Also the whole icon looks a bit low-res.

Thanks for your honest feedback :) I just hired a Designer on Fiverr. I will test different new Icons in an A/B Test.

Yes I see. My icon stands out negatively compared to the other modern icons.
