Running Google Ads Lately, Any Tips To Help Me Out? 🤔

One of the things that I have recently started doing for ruttl's user acquisition is paid advertising. I've heard that paid ads for SaaS is actually more difficult than other niches, but I am testing to see if it's true.

Since I am new to this area of marketing, I wanted to ask and see if anyone in the community has done Google Ads before?

Here are some of the things that I have been doing personally -

  • Added 5-6 keywords that I want to target
  • Turned off auto advertising on keywords where ruttl is ranking already
  • Established target geographic locations
  • Running the ads on specific timings like mornings
  • Configured the console to track conversions

In case you need reference of my ad before you comment, here's a look at the full ad text -

Is there anything else that I should be doing more specifically? Do you think the ad text misses anything or I should go for display advertising instead? I would love it if you guys can share any tip/tricks/do's/don't while running Google Ads, so please feel free to add any thoughts you can add to help out in the comments! 👇

Thanks for the help! 🙌

Have a great day!
Harsh 💯

P.S - In case you are into designing, you might find content I have been putting up on my product's blog page useful, so do give it a read if that's helps you!

If you had to choose a paid ads platform for your product, which would you choose? 🤔
  1. Facebook Ads
  2. Google Ads
  3. Linkedin Ads
  4. Any other platform

Hi Harsh, Lorenzo here. I worked at Google for the first three years of my career, advising clients on their advertising strategies (proof). Three quick things I would recommend:

    • Leverage automation. Automated bidding and targeting do work really well if they have clear signals to work with. Set up a stepped conversion funnel using analytics and let your campagin optimize towards your goals.
    • Structure your campaign well. You should have your campaign structured around your audiences, so that the system (and you) can tailor your value prop and message to your clients and see how they respond. If you do this well, and if you couple your approach with automation, you can also extend your keyword targeting – the algorithm will do its best to optimize towards your goals at your set CPA.
    • Curate your copy. Creatives account for between 50-70% of an advertising campaign performance (I remember reading this from somewhere like Nielsen or the alike). In Google Search that means you should make the most of your descriptions, headlines, and extensions. As a general rule of thumb I'd say you should have at least 2 ETAs and 1 RSA per ad group (+as many extensions as you can, since they can get you more real estate on the user's screen at the same price).

I think the last one is honestly the hardest to get right as it requires a lot of work (for the bare minimum I suggested it would mean writing 12 different headlines, 8 descriptions without even counting extensions). In my Indie Hacker life, I am in the process of building a tool that solves just that problem 👉 Adflow. It's currently in a free beta, happy to hook you up with an invite if it can help you.

PS: I had already stumbled upon ruttl here on IH. Keep up the great work 😉.
