Share your best tips for falling asleep

I've been an insomniac for as long as I can remember. I've tried so many tricks and hacks to fall asleep. The most successful one I've had is sleeping with a fan on (The Vornado brand fan has a soothing sound). If I don't have a fan handy (i.e traveling) I find a good youtube video with fan noises).

I combine this with putting on a podcast that either is boring or the topic changes frequently. Here are the 3 that have worked best for me.

  • AWS Podcast (the monthly update episodes ONLY).
  • Sleep with me
  • Timothy Ferris (episodes where guest has a deeper voice or speaks slowly)

Putting the volume to barely audible is important. Enough to hear, but low enough that you'll miss a few occasional words/sentences.

What have you tried that works well?

My alarm has an iPod dock that also has a countdown to stop playing function. The most played 'songs' are 'waves on a beach', 'rain sounds' and a white noise track. I've also got a couple of phone apps that can also stop after a set time.
