Show IH: GetStoreJobs "Airbnb for low-mid skill jobs"

Hi people!

I am building getstorejobs.com to help people with finding jobs in their area. (also checkout https://getstorejobs.com/map?q=&z=15&l=New York, NY )

After seeing lots of people losing their jobs and having issues getting unemployment benefits, I decided to build a website which helps anyone to find jobs nearby. In order to make job finding easy for everyone, website contains jobs which doesn't require expertise in some area or high education levels.

Website contains mostly retail, hospitality, warehouse and delivery jobs and doesn't contain marketing, human resources, CEO, CIO, software engineering kind of jobs.

Can you please help me promote this website by sharing it to people who lost their jobs? I will highly appreciate your feedback about how can I improve website and also how can I promote it. I am working on adding more jobs from more retail stores.

Really love the idea of helping this market. My little brother fell in this category and struggled to find work. In the end he found something and got a job because someone he knew had an opening at their company and he was in the right place at the right time. @emgo 's suggestion of helping people find things that someone in their network has a connection to would be great. You might also be able to collect resumes, etc and surface those to hiring managers at the different locations. IE, hiring manager at Target hops on and see's that there are 40 people that live within 20 minutes drive of his location. He can then look and reach out to them directly.

      Hey @calebtonkinson,

Thanks a lot for nice improvement idea, I like idea of showing hiring managers nearby candidates a lot and I think I need to talk with my friends in hiring in retail industry and see if they are interested in such feature. Also I released website only 2 weeks ago, showed to friends and after they said looks ok, released here :) Long way to go, this ideas you shared will help me a lot a long the way, thanks!

Congrats on getting it out so quick! If you keep iterating I think you get to a compelling unique value proposition.

Hello! Good job on executing on your project.

In terms of product, for example when I opened the page on NYC, I only saw jobs for FedEx (the most recent ones I guess?) -- having a way to navigate through content, maybe show a list of brands, etc., could help diversify the job providers when landing/navigating. Also, the text snippets look all the same when only one company is represented, and therefore there's no much value to having them there.

Good on you to care about others and for wanting to help. Now in terms of job searching, what I'm still missing with this site is a differentiator. Why should someone use this site and not indeed.com, monster.com, or Craigslist?

In an economy where a lot of people have lost their jobs, finding where the jobs are isn't the problem: it's that there is too little supply, and whenever something opens up it's getting filled up real quick. Also, most people know the major brands/companies, and can go to their websites directly.

Some differentiators that come to mind:

    • Finding jobs within commute distance
    • Finding jobs for local mom and pop stores (i.e. the ones generally not available via APIs)
    • Finding jobs at stores/places that are within a +1 jump in my network (i.e. someone works or has worked there who knows someone I know, and could introduce me if I asked)

I hope this helped, good luck with your project!

      Hey @emgo,

Thanks a lot for nice feedback!

I only saw jobs for FedEx (the most recent ones I guess?)

Currently there are only few companies from where I am collecting data, working on adding more data sources, so website will get more jobs.

having a way to navigate through content, maybe show a list of brands

while thinking about UX of this website, I came to conclusion that for bigger brands showing their logo could be more relevant to job seeker. Another problem was where and how can I show list of companies in mobile UI. For now brand can be seen on map marker if you zoom in more, when single point (or cluster of points) contain jobs for more than one brand, then I am showing store logo.

Why should someone use this site and not indeed.com, monster.com, or Craigslist?

Main differentiator is I am focused on low-mid skill job niche. All websites you mentioned are great and they are general purpose aggregators, which aggregate every kind of job.
If we look from perspective of student, unemployed person without education or employees of industries where COVID hit hard (like event, hospitality and etc,.) and when you open indeed.com and search your area, lets say Seattle, there you will see lots of software engineering, marketing kind of jobs, which is little bit not relevant for person looking for temporary or part time job. But in getstorejobs.com you will immediately see jobs which doesn't require high level of education or lots of experience, you can pick up most of jobs there pretty quickly.

In an economy where a lot of people have lost their jobs, finding where the jobs are isn't the problem: it's that there is too little supply

This. Problem at this moment is supply, I am trying to help people a little bit, by showing jobs near to them, you can set up alert in 4-5km distance around your home and get notified when there is an opening, or you can setup notification in area where your kids are going to school, so you can pick them up easily, if they are going to schools far from your house.

And thanks a lot for some suggestions you shared, I highly appreciate your feedback!
