Slack, Zoom, Notion, and other major tech platforms are having a global outage

This morning I spent an hour struggling with connectivity issues in Notion. Then I opened Slack to vent to my team and saw that Slack was down too.

Turns out we're in the midst of another huge outage?

On the heels of the worst cybersecurity breach in US history, I hope I'll be forgiven for fearing this may be related to malicious hackers. After all, though the Russian attacks in mid-December were focused on US government agencies, they also breached the private sector and Big Tech:

Dozens of security and other technology firms, as well as non-governmental organizations, were also affected, Microsoft said on Thursday. While most affected by the attack were in the US, Microsoft said it had identified victims in Canada, Mexico, Belgium, Spain, the United Kingdom, Israel and the United Arab Emirates.

“It’s certain that the number and location of victims will keep growing,” Microsoft added.

How is Microsoft doing in this latest breach?

Looks like it's an AWS thing. Just got this email from Notion:

    1. 1

Yeah, must also be impacting GCP and Azure as well based on the services that are having issues. Unless google and MS Teams run on aws or it’s a pure coincidence.

I've been banging my head against the wall all afternoon. This does once again show the problems with being 100% reliant on cloud based systems.

    1. 1

You wouldn't have these services without the Cloud in the first place. Face it.

  4. 4

I wonder why we don't have an omnicloud service yet - something that cost-effectively lets you replicate infrastructure across providers without ever really even thinking or knowing about AWS / Azure / etc.

    1. 1

Because each provider has their own services and people prefer to use them instead of reinventing the wheel or instead of investing in taking care of another complex system.

      1. 4

What I want is a place to deploy my containers that hot-swaps between AWS, Azure, and GCP based on availability.

  5. 4

My money is on problems with autoscaling infrastructure. All these issues lining up with the first day back at work for most tech workers can't be a coincidence

    1. 1

No. Rather it's a problem of over-capacity. There's a quick surge in the use of online services due the pandemic which have probably hit the hardware capacity limit and there's not enough people @work or not enough space left to add more servers in such a short time.

We run 100% on AWS, and have seen no outages. The Service Health Dashboard shows no recent events. https://status.aws.amazon.com/

I had an interview scheduled this morning using Google Meet that didn't happen, guessing this could be the reason. I think the interviewer is in Spain. Have another interview using Zoom, hopefully that one goes ok.

  8. 2

Totally! It's interesting that this seems to cover at least 3 public clouds, too (aws, gcp, azure). Good luck to everyone working on this!

I haven’t experienced any of these problems with the products that I use, I’m from India

Hey @channingallen, sorry for interrupting this thread, but I am having problems making a post on any board on IH. I just get an error "Sorry you are not allowed to post", without any hint of what is wrong. Can you help please?

    Thanks

problems making a post on any board on IH

not clear which board you're talking about. the home page? mind breaking down the steps you're following that lead to this error?

      1. 1

I tried in several boards. First I tried in "Growth", then in "Twitter". Got the same error. Thanks for looking into it.

I believe that the fault is related to Cloudflare.com

  12. 1

I was facing the same issue recently and it's been happening multiple times now.
I wonder if things will get better or worse from here.

  13. 1

Yup, couldn't use Todoist or Notion most of the day.

  14. 1

Crazy how AWS can take down the whole tech industry. Luckily we haven't experienced any issues on our app 🤞
