Soliciting store ratings?

How does everyone with an addon out do this? I've about 20k users across a set of extensions and I've got a total of 30 star ratings across AMO and CWS. I've seen some shitty techniques that lock functionality unless a rating is done, and I've seen a some delayed requests ala mobile apps with a popup to rate -- I'm not a big fan of either and per where I've seen it implemented, it didn't look great or produce great results.

How do you make sure users rate their experience with your stuff?

I can share my experience with PocketTube
    I have 100K users, 2.5K reviews, 4.7 ratings, 3 years in CWS
I think lock functionality is not a good way. My extension for YouTube, so I created a popup message https://prnt.sc/v43s9q directly on YouTube and ask the users to rate my extension. I showed it several times and if the user ignores it I hide it forever. In the first iteration after any rating, I redirect the user to AMO or CWS, next I started to show the popup only for the active users(I consider active ones who create some groups in my case), and after using my extension 7 days. Next, I started to redirect only if I got 5 ratings (in my case it is over 95%). After the user rated my extension I didn't show the popup again. Also, I added chrome.contextMenus.create for Rate me. So, I think my approaches are not an annoyance and my users are happy to rate my extension.

We have about same number of users, but your # reviews and rating is much higher, so I am curious what kind of conversion you see? I get about 500 installs daily, from 7-8K impressions. I have rating 3.67 after about 209 reviews, 100K+ users, also about 3 years in the store.

Great numbers! My extension has only 200-400 installs daily:

Interesting, thanks for sharing! What do you think is causing your impressions to increase over time? Have you been marketing?

I'm not sure but, I think it is related to the new screens, promotions images, and new logo. I updated it recently. But I don't understand why views increased, but install stayed the same.

Sorry for side question, the graph seems interesting and I don't think I saw that in the same graph on CWS -- is this from somewhere else?

It is the old CWS console stats page -- just refusing to switch to the new one.

      Hi Nabok,

Curious -- how did you initially get traction for PocketTube? It looks like you are getting lots of impressions organically, but for smaller extensions I don't think this is the case. Did you have to get the flywheel going (so to speak) via other acquisition methods? At which point (# of users) did it start to take off on its own?

I don't prompt at all, but I usually have a link to "rate app". I get about 1 review / 100-500 active users on average. I also build mobile apps which often prompt, but even in that env I prefer not to prompt, because to majority of users they are an annoyance and most users will just dismiss. I put the link in settings usually.

However if you want to add a prompt then best to add it immediately after some successful action. For example, I remember paypal prompting for review right after I got a message I had received money. You should look for a similar opportunity.

I have no data to show that higher number of solicited ratings improves conversions compared to organic reviews left by users over time. If you have some insight please share.

Do you ever talk to your users? Could be a great thing to ask as part of any user research sessions you do.
