Sunday Edition: Weekly Retrospective!

#weekly-retrospective, #daily-stand-up

The weekly retro gives hackers the space to:

  • Reflect on our triumphs for the week.
  • Reflect on where we fell short for the week.
  • Share concerns about being on track for your monthly epic and ask for feedback.

To join in:

01 Share your epic (a big chunk of work with a meaty objective) you'd like to complete by the end of April.

02 Share your triumphs for the week.

03 Share your failures for the week.

04 Share your concerns moving forward.

05 Give feedback to at least one fellow hacker and give them an IH Point for their check in.

Optional:

06 Share your Work In Progress to underscore your accomplishments.

(Smiling) The regular scheduled stand up will resume tomorrow.

      I like this one :)

01 EPIC: By the end of April I'd like to have the commenting and post creation on a significantly higher + self-sustaining upward trajectory. It's been mediocre all year, but it's gotten better in recent weeks and continues to improve.

02 TRIUMPH: This was a podcast-only week for me, and I recorded a bunch of episodes that I think went well and will make for great listens! Plus I even had the guts to throw one out that didn't go well, which is so hard to do, but important. 💪

03 FAILS: Despite this being a podcast-only week for me, I didn't edit a single episode during the week. So now I'm stuck doing it over the weekend. This happens to me every podcast week. I hate editing and end up procrastinating.

04 CONCERNS: My main goal for IH is massive growth, but it's not clear how to get there. What if I spend all my time working on basic UX, performance, and features, and it makes you all happier, but IH doesn't grow? What if I neglect that stuff to instead work on ambitious moonshots, but they don't pan out, and not only does IH not grow, but you guys are upset with me for not fixing the basics? What if I continue straddling the line and doing both, and just do a mediocre job at both, because it's too much for a small team? There is no certain path forward.

(These are concerns you only have when you get acquired or take VC fundng.)

06 WIP: I'm working on categorizing all the posts for the past 2.5 years, so I can see what's worked the best (high # of comments), and then build things that encourage more posts like that.

Tough questions! Right now things feel OK, meaning major bugs seem to have either disappeared, or I'm getting used to them so I don't notice them anymore. It's a tough place to be when a squeaky wheel asks for grease, too. One thing is certain, massive growth would mean a lot more in the feed. Right now I need to look at both Newest, Favorite, and Hottest to get a good feel for what's going on, but that's OK with me. Almost always something to look at!

        Thanks for the feedback!

I gotta admit, I'm curious what a "didn't go well" podcast looks like for @csallen. (Smiling) I'm betting it's a high bar.

Question: Did the mediocrity coincide with the significant UI change? Does there exists annual ebbs and flows (high engagement after the new year, followed by a lull, followed by high activity in the fall)?

As for the concerns... seems like you're on the right path. Talk to your users. You asked the 1 - 10 scale thing. But I would have found your question above more interesting: If I were to work on 3 - 4 moonshots this year, what would I be neglecting that would piss you off?

    2019 Goals for Magnus Rush

    • 50 Interactive Podcasts Created by Podcast hosts: (5/50) 10%
    • 12k MAU for the App: (31/12k)

    April Epics (Stats from Clubhouse.io)
    Milestone: Launch: 95% Complete

    • [Epic] Launch Marketing: 79% Complete
    • [Epic] SaaS Launch: 100% Complete DONE!
    • [Epic] Mobile App Launch: 100% Complete DONE!

    SUCCESS
Got the Android app up to par with the iOS app, and went through 4 rounds of iOS Release feedback to finally get it out and on the App Store.

    FAILURE
Had to drop iPad support in order to get the app out. I was woefully unprepared with iOS screenshots for the different platforms and hadn't tested iPad in a while, so there were lots of little UX issues there.

    NEXT WEEK
Five big remaining tasks for April's epic: write a Medium Post, release a Podcast Episode showcasing some of MR's features, and talk to 3 SaaS customers. I've been working on 1 and 2 but avoiding the direct contact again. I will probably get started on that this week, get a calendly, etc.
