Sunday Retro: What did you accomplish this past week?

#weekly-retrospective, #daily-stand-up

The weekly retro gives hackers the space to:

  • Reflect on our triumphs for the week.
  • Reflect on where we fell short for the week.
  • Share concerns about being on track for your monthly epic and ask for feedback.

To join in:

01 Share your epic (a big chunk of work with a meaty objective) you'd like to complete by the end of May.

02 Share your triumphs for the week.

03 Share your failures for the week.

04 Share your concerns moving forward.

05 Give feedback to at least one fellow hacker and give them an IH Point for their check in.

Optional:

06 Share your Work In Progress to underscore your accomplishments.

(Smiling) The regular scheduled stand up will resume tomorrow.

    01 Epic

    5K MR

    02 Triumphs

    • Released my first module and no one asked for a refund.
    • Hosted my first live session.
    • Finished two scripts and two recordings.
    • Published a pillar post.
    • Published four articles for Jeanius.
    • Migrated Happy Endings to Render.

    03 Hard Fails

    • An awful interaction with Stripe.
    • Perhaps I could have given myself more time to get ahead of the course drip. It's been intense creating two modules each week. But at the same time, it's getting done.

    04 Concerns

All in, I made $6,291 from my first online course by leveraging an email list that may only be good to support one offering. I won't know until July whether I can generate this sort of interest month over month. But despite the potential for wasted effort, the effort is at least financially covered, unlike Jeanius and Happy Endings.

Brilliant! Cheers for running multiple ventures simultaneously, while being consistence. Consistence often matters more than anything else.

    May Goals

    • [Magnus Rush] Automate podcast outbound emails based on user activity: 100% Complete
    • [Magnus Rush] Invite 30 podcasts to the platform: 8/30 Done
    • [Announcr] Validate business interest with 10 survey responses/interviews: 4/10
    • [Announcr] Sign one customer for a paid pilot: 0/1
    • [Announcr] Prototype Consumer App for live demos: 91% Complete
    • [Announcr] Prototype Location Client App for live demos: 73% Complete

    Triumphs
Got pretty clear this week on the value prop for Announcr, and how I would like to put together the demo for it. I'm building an MVP to demo. I did a live test at a location to test arrival messages (outside in the parking lot). When it got triggered, it was truly magical and actually quite valuable to me as a consumer. This feature can exist without an actual Announcr device inside the location, and can be a great value add for Quick Service Restaurants/drive throughs.

Saw my number of outreach emails creep up for Magnus Rush, which is great.

    Failures
My outreach email algorithm looks for a user-generated event, usually podcast_listen. If I haven't emailed the podcast owner within the last 30 days (with the email address listed in their show feed), it sends them a note to let them know a user has listened to their podcast on the platform, tells a little about the platform, and invites them to come in.. free. I was leery of implementing an automated email feature for awhile, but in a rare feedback burst on one of the FB podcast groups, people let me know they'd WANT to be notified.

However, after one such outreach email went out, for a podcast I enjoy, the podcast hosted emailed me back with "This is spam". It was really offensive, those 3 little words. I don't know that I'm going to change anything, but it was a reminder how I react to negative feedback.

    Concerns
Other podcast apps are beginning to copy features from Magnus Rush. Some of the users of MR are product managers for other podcast apps. It's flattering, but also kind of sucky. If I can't reach some good pattern of growth next month, I will consider switching gears and putting a long term growth plan in place. Maybe I need to think about selling or white labelling the entire platform for companies who might want their own podcast app, and for which MR might be a good fit.
