Suspicious upvotes on Product Hunt – Bought?

  1. 10

Quick update: At least Product Hunt has now reacted and deducted upvotes from the products. Instead of place 1 and 3, they are now on 12 and 20.

Sounds like this link found it's way to PH :D But the launch day effect is gone either way...

        1. 2

Sadly true :( Most of the momentum has gone. And the newsletter placement cannot be changed afterward.

          1. 1

Yeah, most traction comes from the top positions on the launch day. The newsletter brought some indirect traction in from of translations & posts later on.

A bit outside the subject. PH is a better source of fame than customers. I didn’t really think about it before launching, but then it struck me - many people go to Product Hunt to get to know new products because they like knowing them. However, it doesn’t mean that they will buy anything, even if they vote and write a positive comment.

    1. 2

I would say, like Volkan, that it depends a lot on the product and audience. There are many great examples where Makers generate massive sales with a successful launch. And it's definitely worth it for the attention.✌️

    2. 2

They buy my product all the time, really depends on your audience.

  3. 5

    I find this very sad.

Hundreds of products launch everyday, hoping to get noticed by the huge community of ProductHunt. Only to get their dreams crushed by others who use this unethical practice in the product world.

  4. 3

I had someone offer to make me top 5 on product hunt for $500. I just feel like that is cheating.

    1. 1

That's quite a lot 😂 For the fact that you already can get 200 upvotes for $10. But surely there are still some who accept this offer anyway.

  5. 3

It might be my subjective impression, but I got the feeling moderation on PH got more "relaxed". I've reported clear spam a few weeks ago and the product continued to rise without any visible intervention.

    1. 2

      I remember your case!

  6. 2

wow, I opened this post twice and then I realized that this was the day I launched tabExend. Very competitive day with lots of great products, but I remember DocMe coming out of nowhere and stealing a spot in the top and that clubhouse being untouchable.

    1. 1

I love tabExtend!!! Really top product, deserved to be in the Top 5 for sure.

    2. 1

      Really an incredible day!

  7. 2

Definitely true. Someone on LinkedIn reached out to me with a service selling upvotes. Pricey AF and don't recommend.

    1. 1

It feels like they are everywhere 😭

  8. 2

    Not surprised.

PH has become too big not to do this (I wouldn't but theres's a lot to gain from doing so.)

    1. 1

Especially with such low prices, the temptation is great :(

  9. 2

so with other words, the launch on PH is not as recommendable as it used to be.

    1. 2

I would say it is definitely worth it! But you should always expect something like this and report any conspicuous activities to the team early on.

    2. 1

The unfortunate truth is, that it's probably worth cheating/investing, and you have limited chance making it by yourself to top 3. But I don't like and wouldn't do it.

      1. 1

I think the argument for many is that even if you get exposed, the time you spend on the top spots is worth it because you will get lots of traffic.

  10. 2

    Ph has become a pantomime....

    1. 1

@Michael_Andreuzza we never give up hope since the majority of the community is great 😉

  11. 2

Thank you for pointing this out!
I have noticed an increase in suspicious upvotes over the last few weeks on PH.

  12. 1

I knew this existed since I got an offer to make my app #1 for $5,000, #2 for $3,000 and #3 for $2,000 and no charge if not one of those. However, I assumed few companies did this because of the high price point. Now it looks like there is a low end markets so more prevalent.

It really is sad this happens and unless you do the due diligence as you did, it might not be discovered.

Thanks these great insight and read the 5,000 word PH guide on your site. The mmhhmm video you recommended was fantastic.

    1. 2

@gbourne that is insane! 😳 I hope nobody fell for this scam.

      1. 1

I was found because I tried PH’s Ship - a product I wouldn’t recommend since 80% of the signups were fake emails.

        1. 1

          Like signups from bots?

          1. 1

Yes - numerous same domains with random usernames. A few real users came and signed up, but hard to get through a lot of the bot noise. The issue with Ship is you can sign up without being a PH user - so low barrier to sign up entry.

Thanks for posting this and doing some investigating.

Just launched our startup - Speeko (https://www.producthunt.com/posts/speeko) - on Product Hunt today. It's been a little underwhelming, especially when it looks like people are gaming the system, but still optimistic about the community overall.

@anilkilic I really appreciate your evaluation! 😊 Thanks for that. I can imagine that it is really hard to recognize all bots. The hurdle to buy 100 upvotes for $15 is also very low.😞

You're good at this investigative work @anilkilic. I wonder if there are people who would pay for it.

I was replying to a different post of yours but you deleted it so am posting here ...

Your site is looking nice. Why are the titles half hidden by other elements though.

IDK if I should go aggressive on this or let it slip.

It looks like you have useful tools (I am not a product hunt guru so cannot say) and I assume people would find value in them so I say go aggressive.

Think about positioning / marketing - i.e. those fluffy things.

Quickest growth hack I've seen on IH is to give value for free. Give people something they like. Don't charge them. After a few turns ask them to pay.
                  Great example: https://www.indiehackers.com/post/how-i-grew-software-ideas-to-6k-mrr-in-three-months-4b6598f378

It's not obvious to me you know your customer well enough yet though. Maybe you do IDK. Your landing page title could be stronger. Also suggest you use word HOME not BASE for your links.

I had another point but forgot it!
