The journey from 0 to 200 followers in 2.5 months

This journey starts around April 8th. I created a Twitter account January 2020, but only seriously started using Twitter when I began building in public. This is the first Tweet from my memory where I really started using it seriously.

🗓 April 8th - May 7th 💁‍♂️ 0 -> 30 followers*

At this point I believe I had 0 - 15ish followers or something like that, but they where for the most part inactive. Pretty much I had 0 followers.

There was a lot of things that I tried in the beginning that didn't work e.g. streaming myself building on Youtube to no one. It was an attempt to "build in public" that didn't work at all of me.

Next I migrated to actually using Twitter. I began by tweeting with the #buildinpublic hashtag, and lightly engaging with others using the hashtag. This approach worked for me. I made a few Twitter friends, and began getting replies, likes, and retweets on my posts + exposure for my project.

One thing I kept seeing on IH & Twitter was that engaging with other people is a key thing to do. I took this to heart, and started engaging heavily with people on Twitter. I was always trying to comment on peoples tweets, and be a familiar face. I can easily say this is one of the best things I did. It really changed my whole perspective on Twitter.

🗓May 7th - May 19th 💁‍♂️ 30 - 100 followers - This is where things really started working for me. Basically I started to experiment with sharing more things on Twitter. E.g. progress reports on my product, travel reports on where I was traveling, and the progression of my followers on Twitter.

There was one Tweet that really popped off growth for me. Here it is:

This tweet lead to tons of larger accounts being tagged in the responses, and them responding to the Tweet, which got my account a bunch of exposure. I think this tweet alone got me somewhere 20-40 followers.

The rest of the growth to 100 was finding cool people to follow, engaging with them, building in public, and continuing to experiment with Twitter.

🗓 May 19th - June 20th 💁‍♂️ 100 -> 200 follower

Once I hit 100 follower I feel like things got a lot easier.

The growth of 100 -> 200 simply came from two things. Engagement with others, and building in public. It was really the mix of these two that got me there.

Also, I found some types of tweets that worked for me. Your mileage may vary.

  1. Jokes / Memes
  1. Successes, failures, and how I was feeling.
  1. Announcements

EDIT: one thing I forgot to mention in this post is that I joined a community dedicated to building in public called publiclab. It was probably solely responsible for getting me 20+ high quality followers. These people were all awesome. Many of them I actually got to know over video. The point is that small communities like these are really good places to connect with like minded people.

That's the journey to 200 IH! **As of writing this: 219 followers **

Hopefully I'll be sharing more of these soon!

    Love your sharing! This is just the start and the best thing is that it will accumulate!

    Also I like how you go from documenting -> publishing your journey, which is the essence of #buildinpublic! I can totally see you do more of it to build your voice :)

    P.S. I met Sasa over a video chat and he is fun and awesome!

      Thanks for this @kevon! Yeah I'm going to be doing more of it!

    The #buildinpublic hashtag is a great way to interact with other people that are building cool stuff.

    Happy 😀 to hear about your journey @sasa_cocic
    What if I told you that you can improve your growth rate on Twitter by 30 -40%

    • We have this tool called Makezu and it works like an all in one growth tool for Twitter
    • It allows you to grow using different automations and campaigns at scale!
      So it's quite superior compared to manually trying to grow
      Happy to get feedback 👉Makezu.io

      Thanks for mentioning this! I'll take a look at Makezu.io!

      To be honest I'm much more of a grassroots kind of guy! I prefer my growth to be organic, and done through relationship building if possible! That being said I think your tool could still provide me with value, but I need to take a closer look at it!

    what does wwrp mean?

    Actually maybe you should use that on your website and style it like a dictionary definition like those hip websites lol.

      wwrp == warp

      I just had to spell it a different way then I wanted, because the domain I wanted was taken!

      Edit: Maybe I should! Not a bad idea. I've actually never thought about doing this.

    Seems like you're on a good step Sasa! It's interesting that your best tweet was an interesting question to the community.

      Thanks! Yeah I think it was because the meme aspect of it, but also I think the people who follow me on Twitter really like to engage!
