I recently did some research looking at which category to focus on finding acquisition opportunities (or development) on the Shopify App Store.
My conclusion pointed me towards Store Management, with a focus on the Finance and Business Insights subcategories.
Here are the tl;dr four reasons why:
It has the right amount of apps - The category only has 641 apps or 10.6%. It's not too large that it's crowded but not so small that it's niche.
It has grown consistently for 6 years - The category has grown consistently in terms of number of apps and number of reviews. The number of reviews has grown faster than the number of reviews on the whole app store for 4 out of 6 years. This is fastest of all categories.
There are two sub-categories to focus on - The Finance and Business Insights provide two focused subcategories that are currently underserved.
You can charge a premium! - Median prices in the Finance and Business Insights subcategories are 50%+ and 60%+ higher than the median on the Shopify app store across all plans. That means either higher margins and/or more opportunity to undercut to win share.
