The Notion API will go live as a public beta on May 13th

The image above is a sneak peek of the developer portal that will go live tomorrow.

Here's more info from the email they sent me:

The Notion API will be available to all as a public beta starting on May 13th. […]

The API now contains many of the fundamentals: reading and writing to pages, querying databases, authorization, and more. This is enough to build many of the interesting integrations you've told us you want to build. And on May 13th, you're in. API integrations will be available to all Notion users, on free or paid plans.

Our goal is to establish that the Notion API is robust, easy to use, and trustworthy. In public beta, we'll be adding new features and making significant changes based on your feedback. Once the most important improvements are included, the API will transition from public beta to general availability — you'll have everything you need to build integrations teams and businesses can depend on.

    I am so excited about this. Gonna be coding like crazy over the next week.

    1. 1

      Curious what are you gonna build with it.

      1. 1

        There's a lot long-term that I'd like to build with it but for starters I'm going to write an integration for https://sheetmonkey.io

  2. 3

    Hum that's super interesting!
    Do you have the link to the newsletter please?

    @channingallen do you know if it's fine to post this info? I posted this somewhere yesterday and was then told to delete it by someone with good connections in Notion, as this was supposedly confidential to those on the beta waitlist

    1. 2

      I posted to Twitter and got likes/retweets from the Notion team, so I think it's all good.

    2. 1

      If it's public beta then why confidential?

  4. 2

    Ready to go down the rabbit hole 👀

  5. 2

    this is going to be a big deal.

  6. 2

    It’s been 3 or 4 years in the making. Excited for this to finally launch.

    Dope.
    When I found out about Airtable it was a game changer.
    Sudenly I had the ability to have an easy to edit DB while accessing it through an API.
    With Notion it's going to 3000 as it's not only a great DB but a good looking frontend.
    The possibilities...
    Dynamic landing page creation;
    Websites with dynamic data, and unlimited hosting;
    Google photos alternative, backed by Notion;
    etc...

    1. 1

      Landing page creation is nice. Dynamic data ? I don't see the realtime api yet but may be with iframe is possible.

      1. 1

        I'm supposing the API has realtime capabilities, even if it's limited to 5 calls/sec for example. (I read somewhere it's the limit on Airtable)

  8. 2

    super excited about this since I do everything on Notion!

    Great stuff coming our way... 🎉

    I don't understand one thing. There are many tools like "create online course from Notion" and similars. Didn't they use Notion API? Or what did they do?

    1. 2

      Also wonder about this. Seen a lot of people say "the landing page was built on Notion". Maybe they used it in private beta?

      1. 2

        Notion used to have good iframe. But now they have some really good API I think now the possibilities are endless.

        1. 1

          Thanks for explanation, now I got it.

    I don't understand why Notion delayed custom domain, its one of the most important feature to host thirdpart docs or pages. We definently need custom domain configuration with API.

    1. 1

      I think now they don't need to release custom domain because of the API. Someone can easily build it using the API.
