This is part of UX mistakes, a weekly newsletter.
A rotating carousel is a set of teasers that switch (usually from right to left) after a few seconds. It is often used on eCommerce sites or landing pages that direct users to different content.
Some teams love to use carousels to show more information in the same space. What we often forget; the limitations are not set by the space on the screen but by the receptiveness of users.
And we didn’t even talk about motion, yet. Evolutionary, it was important to see dangerous changes in the environment – humans focus on moving elements. That’s why rotating carousels are very distractive.
Additionally, the rotation speed is always too slow or too large to digest and tap the desired content, which lowers conversion.
Remove rotating carousels from your site. Use a combination of one large and some small teasers instead.

Could you post an exampe of what you mean by "one large and some small teasers instead"?
Would also love an example of how to do it better.
I hate carousels and sliders, especially where they've set the speed too high! Dude I'm trying to read it and it's switching to the next one.
Carousels belong on portfolio websites- and even that's debatable.
I second your thought @jonaskamber. Specially the fact that the speed of carousel is highly subjective.
Can you think of any alternatives to carousels that might have done similar (or even better) job?
I recommend using a set of (static) teasers instead.
Thanks a lot!
I totally agree and hate rotating carousels, and would love to see some stats to back up the claim that they lower conversions. I believe it instinctively, though 😅

I just checked Amazon and Steam and could find rotating teasers. Can you post a link?
