Website went viral on reddit and need help on setting up servers.

Hey guys,

I built https://workatdundermifflin.com/ using Wordpress and hosted on AWS lightsail.

I initially got the cheapest one with 512 mb ram and 1 cpu not expecting a lot of traffic, but the website ended up going down overnight since it blow up.

Today I got the 4 GB ram, 2 CPU model and it looks like it's struggling. Pretty new to all this. I understand there are ways to handle traffic, and was wondering what you guys recommend as a quick and easy upgrade ?

I don't really see why this site would need wordpress. But with caching in place just make sure the expiry headers are set OK and e.g. use CloudFlare (or any other CDN) in front.

The more you can move into static with a long cache the more performent and cheap it would become
Have a look at you analytics to find where to look first
Also an APM system like newrelic can help you figure where things consume the most, sometimes like an extra index on the db or replacing a heavy extention would do wonders
There are also specific wp extentions that help caching and optimising

I use wp fastest cache and a few optimizers to optimize images and minify files. I think I need a CDN

Think about caching pages as well not just the static elements

Can you cache the about, TOC etc for at least 24hours? Or even 1 hour..

Can you cache your main page for at least 5 minutes? (So what if publishing/changing a post might take 5 minutes..)
