Welcome, introduce yourself! (Week of Feb 23rd)

Rosie here -- the Indie Hackers community manager. Welcome! ๐Ÿ‘‹

This short guide is meant to help you get the most out of Indie Hackers.

First, introduce yourself!

Indie Hackers is a community of people helping each other build profitable businesses and side projects. The key word here is "community." Don't be shy!

For starters, take a second to introduce yourself and share your goals in the comments below. ๐Ÿ‘‡

Just say a few words about who you are, why you're here, and what you hope to accomplish or learn in 2020.

Take a moment to say hello to someone else as well!

Dive into learning.

We've interviewed hundreds of successful indie hackers. I recommend reading a few of their stories. It's a great way to get an overview of what's possible.

@csallen also puts out podcast episodes if reading isn't your thing!

Next, get started!

There's no time like the present. Check out the "Start Here" page for a list of practical steps and articles that can help you take action.

Not only will it help you get started, but it should also introduce you to some of the best parts of the Indie Hackers community.

This is just the tip of the iceberg! If you're ever feeling lost or confused, post in the Meta group or tag me (@rosiesherry) in any comment or post.

Don't forget to introduce yourself and say hi to someone else below! ๐Ÿค—

    Hey guys,

I'm a former lead engineer of a recently acquired startup, currently working at a much larger company as a full-stack senior. I'm passionate about coding, music and staying fit.

Where I can be of help:

    • Technical questions, architecture choices, React, Node, Java, Firebase... Please don't be shy to reach out, I'll help you out just for fun!
    • Motivation: wondering how to energize yourself and others? Suffering from shiny object syndrome? Been there. I've got a few tricks.

    What I am looking for:

    • Get involved with the community. I've spent so much time in the last 5 years relentlessly coding, that I didn't have much time to enjoy a good community vibe.
    • Content creation tricks, specifically video
    • I would love to learn about growth and marketing
    • Feedback on my ideas and projects

I'm also currently working on a SaaS project, that I will be sharing more about in the following months, for the curious minded.

    Cheers!
    Marko

    1. 3

Hi Marko! Would love to hear about your motivation tricks!

      1. 4

What up @pavlomarko ! I too am interested in your motivation tricks! :D (Specifically because I'm building a community around personal development and accountability. :) )

As for content creation tricks for video...

Pull out your phone, point it at yourself, and hit record. Then, and this is the most important part, upload it! ;) lol

Seriously though, don't overthink it, don't worry about editing, just pick something to talk about and GO! Watch it. If you don't like it, take notes and GO again. Just make sure you upload something in the end. :)

Sharing any part of your journey via video is awesome.

Oh! I'll share a quick story that's one of my favorites...

I shot a video at a rap concert on a t68i with the camera extension (back when phones didn't have cameras on them... lol) It's the WORST video I've ever uploaded to YouTube BUT I received a message from one of my subscribers ("My mom manages that guy.") WHAT?! I ended up on the phone with this super cool old school manager of famous hip hop artists from New York because of that terrible video.

Speaking of terrible... just expect your early videos to be terrible. You're going to sound weird, you're going to have a bunch of weird "ticks", it's going to sound rambly (mine are still rambly... but with more style! lol)

        Just get moving! :)

        1. 1

Wow, that's a crazy story. Thanks for sharing! ๐Ÿ˜ŠI'll make sure to record something about my "tricks". I really only have 2 or 3 things, but I repeat them to myself like mantras ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

          1. 1

Two or three tricks are kind of all it takes if they're good! My fundamental tricks are...

            1. Accountability partners
            2. Something to track daily
            3. SMALL changes (which stack into big ones)

Easy as one, two, three! ;) lol

      2. 1

Right on! How do we connect? ๐Ÿ‘Was thinking about making a video about it sometime in the near future.

    2. 1

      Hey Pavlo!
Shiny object syndrome is terrorizing me at the moment! Keep switching from frameworks based on what people suggest is the "next best thing"... Any tips for dealing with this?
      Best wishes

      1. 1

Hey, thanks for the question! In case of frameworks, I usually tend to consider something new, if there is a specific problem I am looking to solve. On the flip side, if you feel like you are productive at the moment, the worst thing you can do is switch the framework.

Unless you have a project and a problem to solve, just using the latest "best" framework will not yield any merit.

What is your end goal? Are you working on something currently?

    Hello everyone,

I'm about to launch a casual game in the app store and play store, I've been working in it for the last couple months and I really like it.

  3. 5

    Hey everyone,

I'm a Software dev recently began a side project in the fragrance scene. I also want to create several startups for the next few months. I figured if I try all this and whether it works or doesn't I will learn a few ropes and probably be better at this startup thing. And set even bigger and more concrete goals in the future. So by end of 2020 I would like to have a real experience starting up close to 5 side projects and take big and bold risks, whatever the consequences.

I believe my goals will be more refined as we go along. PS: This whole as many startups as I can thing is something that was inspired by Levels experience described in his blog https://www.techinasia.com/12-startups-in-12-months-how-this-digital-nomad-doing-it.

Looking forward to sharing my journey with y'all.

    1. 1

Hey, I'm also starting something in the fragrance scene. We are producing our own car scents and starting on etsy. I'm currently building and branding a website as well. Would love to hear your ideas and how you are approaching this!

    2. 1

This is my goal too! Thanks for the reading material and good luck!

      1. 1

Thanks you. And good luck to you too. We're goal buddies now :D

  4. 5

    Hi guys!
I'm software dev in Japan. Looking to hack my own side projects. My wife is a UI designer. All we need is a good idea or a partner up to get rolling.
Hoping to get some inspiration, advice and maybe partnership here. :)

    1. 3

Am in Zambia. would you look at my site and think of a way you can work with me?
      https://osabox.com

    2. 2

This is awesome to hear. My advice to you would be to pick a simple idea and get started creating it, no need to wait for the perfect idea. You will both learn so much in the process that you may come up with a better idea along the way or your simple idea will form into something awesome. Good luck!

    3. 1

Good day - I am in the idea validation phase of a project. I will need a software dev for sure, and UI designer would be helpful as well. Perhaps we could start a conversation and see what sticks?

    4. 1

Hey there! Welcome and good to have you here! :)

  5. 4

    Heya Folks,

I'm a recent Philosophy grad who's been spending the last year traveling, thinking, ideating. I consider myself a generalist because I really feel a knack for conceptual synthesis, playing with theory, talking to myself, etc.

Last summer my friend introduced me to Bret Victor's Humane Representation of Thought (https://vimeo.com/115154289) and it became immediately apparent that, though I had resisted it for awhile, my place is in the tech sector.

I'm here because I was getting really deep into developing an idea to connect designers and engineers so that their MVPs could be developed and tested in a much faster and much more independent manner. A meeting place for collaboration. Lo and behold, it's already going on here (maybe in a more general sense than I was envisioning).

I've been toying with a lot of different specializations in the tech sector. I consider myself pretty proficient at designing and programming, as well as getting into the nuts and bolts of engineering. I just can't keep on an idea long enough before another one grips me and I'm off on a deep dive into another domain of knowledge.

    Therefore, my first goal is:

    • Develop more discipline to see projects to their completion

    This means:

    1. Focus on smaller ideas that I can execute on my own or with another
    2. Don't let the allure of a new idea cloud the current one
    3. Do a little bit every day

    My second goal is:

    • Find a sales job in the tech sector of Seattle (my home)

    This will enable me to:

    1. Eat
    2. Develop a better understanding of the industry
    3. Make the connections and insights that will eventually allow me to better sell my own ideas

There it is! If anyone wants to chat about ideas, I'm currently pretty hyped on decentralization infrastructure like Ethereum, artificial intelligence as opposed to machine learning, and user interfaces.

Also, if anyone wants to get down on some theory or brainstorm over seem things, feel free to reach out. I'm open to meeting up in person in the Seattle area as well.

    Godspeed,
    Skyler

    1. 2

Man! The quote at the start of that video was intense! lol I'm a taichi and taoist dude and something I regularly tell people is that integrating the philosophy into your physicality increases your physical skills and your physical skills increase your philosophical understanding. :D If you don't integrate the two you'll actually hit a ceiling that you can't progress past until you do!

Also, you should take a look at @stevenmeets project! He wants to build a diverse community of doers who can leverage each other's talents and build things. I'm pretty sure he's into blockchain as well. :)

The intro of that video was intriguing. I have it queued up to dive a bit deeper into it later today. :D

      1. 2

        Thanks for the shoutout @CaseyAbbottPayne

We're definitely on the same wavelength, Skyler! Would love to chat sometime.

In the meantime, you can check out Collab X which connects Creatives and Hackers to quickly build out prototypes: https://www.indiehackers.com/product/collab-x

    Hi all
My name is Martin Ratinaud, I'm french expatriated in Tamarin, Mauritius. I'm a full stack dev and am launching a new tool for remote/nomad families to find your sweet spot on earth
    https://www.remote-family.com

I have other ideas in mind for tools I need myself and will look for feedback on all my ideas!

    1. 1

A kind of digital nomad with a family on the road that is not so frequent! And more: tu es francais! Courage pour la suite meme si en tant que dev j'imagine que tu en as pas tant besoins que ca! :)

      1. 1

Merci beaucoup, on a toujours besoin de courage !!! ;-)

    2. 1

Cool idea! I'm not the target demographic, but there's a lot of information out there for "digital nomads" who are usually traveling solo or as a couple. I keep on planning on being a "surfing enthusiast" and I haven't even tried surfing yet! I should make the effort! I hear there are some good places close to me (Taipei, Taiwan). :)

      1. 1

        ha ha @CaseyAbbottPayne
Here is all that you can do in taiwan based on my current set of POI https://spot.remote-family.com/big-city,coworking,golf-course,hiking,horse-riding,ice-rink,international-school,kitesurf,mountain-biking,skateboard,surf,world-heritage-unesco/sp3e/Spain/[[120.08759379386902,24.18895161541846],[120.08759379386902,25.274105743661956],[122.72431254386903,25.274105743661956],[122.72431254386903,24.18895161541846],[120.08759379386902,24.18895161541846]]

Many surf spots and hiking trails are nearby
        :-)

        1. 1

Ah! I was going to say that the link didn't work, but now I see that the whole thing didn't get processed. That doesn't matter because I went to the site and played around with it some more. Pretty cool! I see what it does now! Kind of pulls data from different sources and then shows you a place with all of the cool things in a certain radius. Very cool!

          1. 1

            You got it!

You can now find where on earth would be the perfect spot for your family (or a group of person with different needs)

Here is my original need http://bit.ly/remote-family-original-idea. Surf and horse riding in a warm cheap country between GMT-4 and GMT+4 where you speak english

And here I am in Tamarin, Mauritius, but I could also have been to Barbados, Gambia or Ghana.

And for my future holidays, here it is http://bit.ly/remote-family-martin-holiday-list
Surf and Horse riding in a cheap warm country where you speak spanish !

Maybe that's actually a thing I could add. A wish list of countries where you need to go based on your hobbies

    Hello Everyone!

I just started my own company that focuses on advanced manufacturing. I am wanting to make this company successful and profitable in 2020!

    Jesse

    1. 1

Hey there! What's advanced manufacturing! Tell us more! :)

      1. 1

        Hi David!

Advanced manufacturing is really any newer technology that isn't a standard commercially. Some of the most common advanced manufacturing technologies today include laser cutting/engraving and 3D printing.

I am using both of these technologies to provide services for people. But I am also using these technologies to create high-quality art: https://greenieenterprises.com/

        Jesse

        1. 1

Hey Jesse, that's nice, these look really good! :) Keep up! Didn't know there was such a technical word for it! So is it basically like leasing out your 3D printer or you do some other part of the job too?

          1. 1

Hi David, good question! We actually don't lease the 3D printer. If a customer comes to us asking to print a mini replica of the Burj Khalifa, we will print it for them and ship it to them. Hopefully that makes sense.

            Jesse

            1. 1

              It sure does! :)

  8. 3

Hey folks, I'm Tim. I live in St. Petersburg, FL.

I help run a small (2-person) video production company and in our free time we've been building a website to help startups make decisions on their marketing language. Itโ€™s been over three years in the making, but itโ€™s about ready to come out of the oven:

    ๐Ÿ” broody.io

My first goal is to get ~100 (free) users. It's built for this community so please give it a look if youโ€™re ever struggling with wording. Cheers!

    1. 2

Nice job! Good luck with the company and keep on going! :)

    2. 2

Loved the idea and the branding enough to share it with my co-workers in Slack. Lots of them like it as well :) Congrats on what you've done so far. I'm excited to see where you go!

    3. 2

Yo! Nice intro video! This looks like a really cool idea!

A little feedback from my experience signing up is that when I was immediately hit with the option to try it I froze up... lol I didn't have anything in mind to fill in. Then it took me a couple of clicks to figure out where to sign up.

After that, I wanted to rate some entries but... I guess I can't? (Until I submit maybe?)

Anyhow, I'm actually looking forward to taking for a test drive. I'm writing stuff all the time. :D

      1. 2

Thanks so much for giving it a look, @CaseyAbbottPayne!

And appreciate the comment on the intro video. That seems to be resonating with people. Might need to try running that as an ad.

Currently, new users have to create a poll of their own before they can respond to those of others, but your feedback is making me rethink this. Perhaps if you took a few other polls, you'd have a better sense of what you could use it for yourself, right?

Many, many thanks! Hope to see you on there again!

        1. 2

Yeah, either being able to participate right way (with maybe a limited amount) or even seeing some examples and then being met with a "Now you try!"

I'll have something in mind the next time I visit the site. :)

  9. 3

    Hi folks!

I'm Steven, a PM by trade with some UX and marketing experience. In previous lives, I've worked at pre-IPO companies, been a co-founder of venture-backed startups, consultant, advisor...with lots of failed projects in between.

Where I can be of help:

    • Anything Product Management related
    • Change management within orgs
    • Asia startup trends

    Excited to chat/learn about:

    • Building community from scratch
    • Media-tech
    • Future of work/collaboration, gig economies, remote work, on-demand education
    • Alternative VC models

    Good luck everyone!

    1. 2

Hello, Steven! I watched your customer interview with John and it was very rewarding. Having conversations is what it's all about for me, it's how to make the connection deeper and more meaningful. You learn so much! Thank you for taking the leap.

      1. 2

Thanks so much, it's amazing what kinda magic can occur during a convo!

    2. 2

You may have already heard this from me in one of my other comments but... I'm gonna say it again anyway! lol

The "future of work" and collaboration, gig economies, remote work, and on-demand education are all things I'm really excited about. Death to 40-hour workweeks and commutes! Life to 15-hour workweeks and mountain hikes.

Does "alternative VC models" fit into the "future of collaboration" somehow? I only have a basic understanding of the VC ecosystem, but it seems like the perfect place for some "next level" collaboration. :)

      1. 1

100% I definitely believe the typical 9-to-5 job is antiquated and inefficient.

Will "alternative VC models" fit into the "future of collaboration"?
Personally, I'd say yes, but these new VC models will likely look quite different from today's models.

  10. 3

Hello everyone, I'm Julien, a french ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท product designer.

In 2020, I want to create a full & useful UI kit ๐Ÿ›  for all the UI/UX designers.

When I do design, I often start everything from scratch. And at the end, it's very time-consuming ๐Ÿ˜ž.

It's time to take the next level, and organize myself better. I truly believe doing a professional UI Kit that I can sell later will motivate me, and makes earn a lot of time to myself but also others.

It will also makes me explore design trends that I can't explore when working on real products & customers. Kind of research & development, but for UI design.

  11. 3

    Hello!

I currently work in the startup world as a content writer (mostly) in the creative education space. Last year, I learned to code for fun so I could build better projects and here I am. I've been a cross-disciplinary creative (marketing, operations, design, content) and after leaving a leadership role at a high-growth tech company last year where I was able to learn and scale for the people side of things, I'm looking for new creative challenges. I love learning and solving problems, and one day, I'll probably end up building my own thing. For now, I'm just having fun learning. In Vancouver but work remotely.

    1. 1

What up Ana! I'm just cruising through the introduction area replying to peeps that look interesting (to me! everyone is interesting... lol) as I signed up this week. Two questions...

      1. You signed up almost a year ago, what prompted you to post today?
      2. Being in Vancouver and having the last name Wang makes me assume you have family overseas (yes, I'm a real Sherlock... lol) Where abouts? Asking cuz I'm in Taiwan. :)

Ah! The interesting bit... content writing and marketing in the education space. :)

  12. 3

Hi there, everyone. Iโ€™m currently a principal engineer at a rapidly growing tech company, but Iโ€™m really burning out fast. Iโ€™ve decided to try my hand at building a small SaaS business in the wellness/self-improvement space. I am focusing less on coding (hiring they out) and more on marketing and selling.

Iโ€™ve got a big goal: get 20-30 paying customers to replace my current salary in one year or less, by building, buying and begging my way there, if necessary. Looking forward to this journey!

    1. 1

I hope Indie Hackers can help keep you accountable to your goal!

  13. 3

    Hi, guys!

I am Antony -- 24-years old male from Minsk, Belarus. I'm a graduate psychologist and have relevant experience in a mental hospital. In the past, I had an attempt to make my own startup, which I sold early due to a lack of resources. Now I work as a product manager at a telecom company and I dream of going back on a free voyage. Since I was a teenager I had a lot of project ideas I wanted to make it real. I hope to be able to return to conscious and independent entrepreneurship this year. Also, I am a madness in urban exploration and experimental music. Feel free to contact me, if you have any propositions or just want to talk about anything.

    1. 1

      What up Anthony!

I too have a ton of experience in mental hospitals but from the "other side". I have bipolar 1 and have had the pleasure of hanging out in hospitals 10+ times! (I've lost count... lol) The project I was working on the last time I was here was a service for people with bipolar disorder. This time I'm working on a more general personal development community.

What are some of the project ideas you have now?

  14. 3

    Thanks Rosie, hi everyone ๐Ÿ‘‹!

I believe it should be easy for tech companies to plant trees. That's why I'm building a product that will help tech companies plant sustainable and responsible forests ๐ŸŒณ, without having to put any effort into it.

I'm a product designer from the Netherlands and I'm looking for entrepreneurs that are interested in green-tech, climate change and giving back to our earth. I think climate change is one of the biggest issues that we need to tackle in our generation.

    1. 2

Hi @MaartenArts! Iโ€™m a dev looking for ideas to become part of.

      1. 1

Hi Andref, thanks for letting me know! I'm currently still in a discovery phase and I do have a couple of devs in my environment already. But I will keep it in mind.

    2. 2

This would be awesome, more trees!

  15. 3

Hello all! Really glad I came across this site, I think I'll be able to learn a lot from the people here, and hopefully will be able to share some knowledge of my own. I'm currently kind of grasping at straws trying to establish an online business, because I don't exactly have an income stream until I get something established >_> That's not meant to sound like a complaint or gain sympathy, it's just context. At the moment I'm working on building something that I suppose is similar to this site in a way. [though i've not explored this much yet] More specifically, I'm building a website for ecommerce users, designers, webmasters, etc. to be able to network, barter services, and find useful online or software tools that will be beneficial to their project. I'm also taking online courses to learn programming, with the goal of building dapps, or integrating blockchain tech and web3 in creative ways for people focused on digital careers.

Thanks for taking a couple minutes to read my rant. I'm looking forward to my time here :D

  16. 3

    Hi all,

I'm looking to boot up a side project based on a decade of refining the idea and there still being a wide open gap. I am looking to grow that side project into an organic growth SaaS product with a limited funding round pitching with an actual product and ideally a client (or two). Been running teams in the startup world with multiple acquisitions under my belt from small grow sell and restart, but have no idea how to chase funding. My expertise is market need driven, sling the code and run teams to deliver on my (and my teams) vision.

Why am I here? 1 part motivation... Keep myself honest, I finally solved the last technology hurdle so it's go time. The other part learn from what others know here and in return share what I know!!

Looking forward to getting to know you all!
    -Aqua-

    Hey everyone!

I have my own personal development site that I have been running for around two years now. It was initially just a hobby whilst at university but now that I have graduated, I am trying to make it my full-time 'thing'. It has over 100 articles currently on topics like mindset, philosophy, productivity, health, finance and other wellness musings.

For almost 2 years, I published a new post every Sunday but have now upped my publishing to three times per week. This is something that I want to keep up for the whole of 2020.

I am also launching another project within the next month or so. Stoicism is growing in popularity across the western world and whilst DailyStoic caters to much of the US' needs, I feel there is a gap in the UK market for similar products relating to the philosophy including medallions, collector coins, posters and the like. I already have my first batch of coins ordered and am excited to see where this business takes me this year, too!

I am looking for accountability and connection more than anything but will always welcome advice from people in writing/publishing/marketing for my website side of things and distribution/products/services for my new Stoic project.

Thanks for giving me your time and I am always willing to help others with questions regarding my own areas of relative experience :)

  18. 2

    Hey, world!

I'm a 21 years old Software Engineer in Kazakhstan,

Last year, my friend and I have run a media agency, which was profitable enough to bring us some money for living and even growth. Closed after a year. Reason: burned out of doing something we are not obsessed with.

Today, we do what we love, but for people, we do not care about.
However, we have some startup ideas we are working on right now. So, we are planning either to fail fast and young or grow.

  19. 2

    Hello!

I'm an agency owner of a fully remote SEO team in Canada and have had my head down in the daily grind for too long - making the time now to better connect and network with others.

We've cleaned up our process a fair bit recently and launched a new, productized service offering, so I am hoping to connect with others in the productized services space to share ideas and insights on what's working (and what's not)!

I am happy to offer insight into organic search marketing, the freelancer to agency journey, and building remote teams if anyone has questions or interest in that space!

    Thanks :)

    Hello everyone,

I am a current do all things guy for a company here in Greece. I am good at fixing things (like phones doing work at home , installing various operating systems). Currently i am working in a company here in Greece and developed 2 quite large e-shops in Shopify with a really nice ecommerce theme (popups , banners etc) and i tweaked it a little bit so we can get it working for Greece.

I am currently developing a private web app (shopify based) that pulls all products and hopefully someday i can make things get organized by orders of those products and add new fields into the webapp(shopify doesn't provide upfront custom fields like storage location of the product) and which in the end you can make output on excel or pdf format the products you would like to order etc.

Quite complicated webapp i am 30% done at the moment.

I learn quite easily (shopify 0 knowledge at september 2019 now on february of 2020 i can setup any store you like from scratch) but i lose my motivation easily. When i am focused on something i do tend to go full on that project and don't stop.

I am trying to build some custom web apps on the side (propably shopify apps and maybe some wordpress apps ) for greek market (api connectors for shipping carriers here in greece) and want to try the whole saas market.

If you would like to look on some of your shopify stores or share my knowledge send me a message!

P.s. I need to escape the Greek crisis as well and be self employed at some point :D

Hola everyone, I'm a product manager at modestly sized video streaming company based in Asia. I'm totally into hiking and try to read 2 books a month (keyword here being try) :)
I've run a startup in the retail tech space (in store beacons) before and have some minor levels of experience in running a small team

I'm happy to help with :

    1. Building an MVP and finding out your first segment of customers
    2. What metrics might be of importance / what metrics would not be important
    3. Potential risks associated with the product / idea / MVP
    4. Carrying out user interviews to gain some level of insight into problems worth solving

Looking for feedback on an idea that i'm toying around with and getting involved in being able to give back to the community!

    1. 1

ไฝ ๅฅฝ๏ผWhere about in Asia? I'm in Taiwan. :)

Those are all things I'm sure I'll need help with at some point... lol

What's the idea you're toying around with? I'd be happy to provide some feedback. :)

  22. 2

Hello hello! This is v2.0 of me signing up for IndieHackers. I lost the email address for v1.0 (@CaseyAPayne... lol). When I signed up then I was working on developing a service for people with bipolar disorder. I ended up having a manic episode while working on the project and decided to put it to the side for now (if only it already existed! lol)

Me v2.0 is building a personal development community. In a way, I'm building the thing I need in order to build the thing I want to build. I have to take managing my mental health extremely seriously. Especially if I want to build the company I have in my brain! So I've decided to build something that keeps me focused on that and I'm helping others do the same. :)

What got me to sign up this second time is being in @8bit's first cohort of community builders. I have a feeling I'll be much more active this second time around. :)

    1. 2

So grateful to be hanging out here with you in IH! This will be a great spot for us to build something in a safe environment while test-driving some of the new community-building skills that we're working on!

So stoked for your 2020 this year!! I'm so grateful to be a small part of it!

      1. 1

Yeah! I'm excited about coming into this community... with a community! :D

Hello everyone, I am Sumiya, product guy from Mongolia ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ณ.

I co-founded Tomujin Academy, social enterprise NGO that helps high schoolers to apply for best US colleges. We run comprehensive programs to prepare students to take tests (SAT, TOEFL), write college application essays, and finally get accepted to the colleges. In 4 years, we raised $18m as a financial aid for our students.

Motivated by our success, we decided to scale our business by leveraging technology and alternative education.

So, we founded tech company and launched MVP of first product (digital network of counseling) in 4 months. Now, we've ~600 users and developing more modules such as admissions system and digital learning system (online courses, tests, assignments).

Since tech and product management were totally new things to me, I am facing obstacles such as managing developers, making product decisions, and creating team culture. I hope to learn a lot from IH community. ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. 1

This sounds really cool! Just googled the academy and saw the website and Instagram. You should create a product page and share updates! :D

Hi everyone! I'm Robin!!! I just got to know this site from watching YouTube videos. I failed my 6-month long startup just now! I just couldn't believe I repeated all the mistakes that I learned not to do! I got to meta-think myself all over and reflected on the things that are core to making the next success. The biggest reason I got to stop was my runway. Now I'm looking for a job to get back on my toes and start making a side project that gets traction and eventually become a huge startup!
I wish to make a real revenue income that will make me keep on implementing cool side projects. And also learn how to actually get cool side project ideas!

    1. 1

Argh, sorry to hear that. What was the project? Is there no way you can keep it going as a side project? It's easy to underestimate how long it can take to get a project off the ground.

      1. 1

I did like 4 projects but most of them needed offline hustling. There was one that could be done online which was an app that gave company tips to job seekers. Job seekers want to know the real stories of the company. So we made them connect with the people who actually are employed at that company. It's a tip marketplace for company members and job seekers!

  27. 2

Hi all - starting a side project that automatics one of the most boring tasks in film production, the making of script sides. Hoping to use this experience as my first step into being an indie hacker with all the ups and downs that come with it!

  28. 2

    Hi Rosie,

I am dev who is looking for a community to learn a lot about startups as they are the key drivers for the 4IR. I have a couple of ideas that are still in the incubation phase hence my zeal to learn how to convert my ideas into an actual product.

    Hi Everyone,

I'm a full time front-end dev working in Australia. This year as a side project I want to release my first mobile app (that's not under the umbrella of my employer). I've been wanting to do this for years and couldn't be more excited now that I've broken ground.

Please give me a shout out if you work in Australia, I'd love to talk to someone about the specifics of handling paperwork/working in our market.

Looking forward to talking to you all in the comment sections!

    1. 1

Your username is funny. I thought something was wrong with Indie Hackers and had to hover over to make sure... lol (Why isn't his name loading...) I'm not too far from your timezone (Taiwan). What kind of app you got in mind?

  32. 2

Hi Rosie! Iโ€™m overwhelmed and love to procrastinate! ๐Ÿฅ€

I am eager to find ways to enhance and overcome challenges symbiotically! ๐Ÿค“

    1. 1

Oh yes. Overwhelm and procrastination, my not so wonderful friends!

Are you working on anything specific? What stage are you at?

  33. 2

    Hey guys,

I'm looking for inspiration and guidance to hack a successful side business in 2020.

Let's get the ball rolling and build some stuff.

    1. 1

Well said mate! :) Good community here I'm sure you'll find some nice people and inspiration! :)

  34. 2

    Hi All,

I'm looking to get some validation and add to my list of beta testers lined up for my new startup, The Lone Contractor. I want to launch The Lone Contractor to the UK, provide some great value for solopreneurs, contractors, and to build and grow a product that solves a problem for a lot of one man band companies.

    Thanks for having me, Tom

    1. 1

What level of contractor are you looking for? A person just starting out? Someone more established? Do they have to live in the UK or be a UK citizen?

A couple of friends came to mind. :)

      1. 1

Hi @CaseyAbbottPayne - I'm looking for any level of contractor! The tool is built to help sole director companies with their tax obligations by providing them the amounts they need to set aside each month for Corporation Tax, VAT and personal tax so theres no big surprising bills at the end of the financial year. The only requirement is for them to have a LTD Company in the UK. Heres a link to sign up - http://bit.ly/2Po4zVk - I would be very grateful if you passed it on

        1. 1

Ah! I see. The person I had in mind isn't at that level yet, but now I understand who you're looking for. :)

  35. 2

My name is Ben. I am a Dad, a software engineer and work part time at a Hardware store also.
I am here because my brother and I have embarked on a project dedicated to accommodation booking in Australia and I find this community a great source of inspiration and knowledge.
I discovered it via Courtland and the Indie Hacker podcast.

    Great stuff, keep it coming!

    Hello :)

I am currently a University student of informatics, who has a desire to learn Machine Learning and maybe one day start freelancing as a Machine Learning Engineer. I am not new in ML, have already written few models, but I am hungry for more :)

I am here to share my achievements, get inspired and most importantly of all to part of a community. Cheers guys!

  37. 2

Thank you so much for the introduction and hospitality, Rosie. I am very grateful to be part of this amazing platform.

  38. 2

Hello, I am sambat. I am full time web programmer base in Thailand.

  39. 2

    Hi everyone,

I love creating and building. I have created a few business models that have worked for a bit but they don't seem to grow as well. I came here to get inspiration and hopefully give inspiration and info back here so that others can be successful as well. I get unmotivated when I bump into too many hiccups so I hope this website and the community can help me get inspired from learning from each other.

    See you in the threads!

    Hi,

Working on early stages of a cool tech idea but got a little stuck. Came here looking for the right partner/inspiration to help me get it slimmed down, back up, and out the door.

  41. 2

    Hi!

There's no lack of problems to solve in the world, so you'll just have to pick and choose to get started haha!

  43. 2

    Thanks Rosie!

  44. 1

    Hi there! ๐Ÿ‘‹

My name is Stefan. I have a variety of skills, but I'm currently looking for the right space to best put them to use. :)

Designer by trade (UI/UX, the usual), a very solid knowledge of engineering concepts, computer science and I can do some coding (helps a lot with prototyping).
I was the Product Lead at an Augmented Reality-oriented startup for a few years. Did various freelance and agency stuff before that, mobile apps, e-commerce websites, you name it. Currently interested in strategy/marketing/growth.

I made a super hard game with my friend in the meantime, and we were featured on the App Store (search for Eclidus). Tried my hand with one product idea, failed miserably.

Searching for the next one. To be more precise, currently searching for validation for some of my ideas before committing.

Hi, I'm a fullstack software dev, looking to launch a C2C sharing app on the side.

  46. 1

    Hey all,

I manage a team of software developers during the day and am trying to build a business on the side. Excited to be joining! Iโ€™ve started and closed down one side business already, and I have a lot of questions for the community going into this second venture.

  47. 1

I'm a digital marketer in a large institution in NYC andI am responsible for a lot of our marketing communications.

    Hi Everyone!

I am learning about being a better developer, writer and aspiring to become a creator.
I'm passionate about music, puzzles, food and running.

Here for the community, the lessons, and the motivation๐Ÿ™‚

  49. 1

Iโ€™ve recently found the Indie Hackers podcast and have decided to join the community! Iโ€™m a self-taught web developer looking to start sharing my side projects, business ideas with the community. Looking forward to the feedback in all forms and hope to provide useful insightS to others as well!

  50. 1

    Hi all,

I'm currently studying computer science at UT Austin. I'm particularly interested in the fields of cybersecurity and cloud computing (and learning more about machine learning).

I've also always been interested in running my own software company. I had a taste of that at the end of high school working on a now-defunct aspiring sports watch company (https://www.watshout.com).

I'm joining Indie Hackers to learn more about the non-development side of starting a software business. I feel my degree and own interests has put me on the right path in terms of technical knowledge, but I have a huge amount to learn about marketing, distribution, and sales.

I'm currently working on a small side-project called Recorda that aims to be "like Yelp, but private". It started out as a personal CRM for foods I've tried and liked/not liked, but I'm trying to design it to be generalizable to any (place, thing) combo one can try.

    Cheers,
    Ethan

  51. 1

    Hey,
mostly lurking, will chime in if I have something solid to contribute. Looking to improve some small web apps and track how people discovered if a market existed or not.

  52. 1

    Hi all,

Iโ€™m a veteran dev, have been coding for 20 years, looking to weaponise my iOS and Android app (myNoise) with its full cross-platform rewrite from obj-c++ / java + c to Xamarin/rust across mobile/web/desktop/tv in 2020.

Looking for tips regarding mobile growth and pivoting opportunities.

  53. 1

Bumped into this site... not sure what to make of it yet.
But it does run slowly. A lot of spinning wheels.

  54. 1

    Heya guys,

I'm a direct response marketer and copywriter. In other words, I help people and businesses increase sales with written words, design and funnel strategies.

I know how to code HTML and CSS. I also have knowledge in UI & UX. I am currently learning C.

I've always been interested in providing modern solutions to problems.

Recently, I've worked with two clients in the tech industry -- one big established web hosting company and another, a software development agency (which is still an ongoing work).

And now, I realized that I've been setting aside my interest in working in the tech industry.

Hence, I decided to finally join IndieHackers.

    What my mission is:
โ€ข Help SaaS founders increase conversions with costumer-focused positioning, messaging and design.

โ€ข After working with entrepreneurs, consultants, coaches and mentors, I have gained an insight on the funnel strategies they use to launch their info products. I aim to use these principles in helping SaaS founders launch their products successfully by understanding their audience and building a relationship with them.

What I am looking forward to learn and talk about:
โ€ข Learn about growth & scaling
โ€ข Contribute through work, collaboration, gig economies
โ€ข Learn how to found a no-code tech company

I'm also planning to go live with my website soon and I am hoping to build a portfolio by helping SaaS founders.

May everyone be productive and contributive.

    Best,
    Isa

  55. 1

    Hi all ๐Ÿ‘‹
Iโ€™m Fil, digital entrepreneur from Italy.

With some buddies our goal for 2020 is to build https://hound.vc/

We want to shift the paradigm of fundraising and help first-time founders raising money and be noticed by VCs.

Letโ€™s face it: fundraising is hard ๐Ÿ˜ฐ and it's a full-time job in itself.

We believe that founders should not spend their time crafting the perfect pitch deck or searching for "warm" introductions, but, instead, stay focused on what's most important: to scale their business!

With Hound.vc it will be VCs competing for the most promising founders, not the other way around!

Weโ€™ve just opened the waiting list at https://hound.vc/.

Our goal for the next months is to reach 300 founders interested in the product (on the VCs side the interest is already there).

Drop me a note, I'd like to know your thoughts! ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿป

    1. 1

      Hi,

Your mission is wonderful. You're a gamechanger.

      Hoping this will pan out!

Just curious, how will you recruit VCs?

      1. 1

        Hi @whosthisisa,
        thanks for your feedback!
We have some connections in the industry and aim to recruit the others "manually".

We are targeting VCs that are investing at seed - series A level at this stage. Many of them are shifting toward quantitative methods to scout new deals, some building their own "models".
But what they miss is real-time hard data (like revenue), that are very difficult to come by at deal source stage (this is particularly true for early-stage startups).

Of course our tool will be forever free for founders, plus they will have other benefits, for example understanding how they are performing (in term of metrics) compared to their "peers".

        1. 1

          Wow, that's great!

          Hopefully, you're project pans out.

  56. 1

Hello, I'm a software developer working on full-time jobs for years. This is my main job and my only income right now (two daughters, you know). Nonetheless, since I was a teenager I always enjoyed creating stuff (art, poetry, music). I've been working on several non-released side projects on different fronts (music, apps, sites, etc, etc, etc). The problem is that I feel like I always give up and lose motivation after spending a huge amount of time on the projects (and usually when I'm about to release it). I am not sure what happens (fear of launching, impostor syndrome, really not sure) but I have to admit this is very frustrating.

For 2020 I set a goal for myself that I should release my stuff to the public. So here I am. Trying to commit to this community which I've always followed and admired.

As my first project to be released, I decided to resurrect a long time project which kind of resonates with all these ideas of creating things and making stuff (the initial idea came up still in when I was in the college). The name I'm calling it right now is collab-o-mate and the idea is a platform to find and collaborate with other makers on several fields (from art and music to games, apps), etc. I already have the general structure for the site but since I was losing motivation (and this is not the first time I gave up on this project) I decided to make this post and start to be more active on the community to see if I can keep the motivation high.

I hope I can keep you posted.

    Thank you all,
    Bucica

    1. 1

      Hi Bucica,

I know how frustrating how it feels.

Been down that road before. Well, kind of.

Every time I spend a huge amount of time working on a certain interest and the moment comes to tackle my first project, I always find myself losing interest and jumping into another one.

Then one day, I decided to just stick to one thing i.e. digital marketing which I was able to commit to.

Tech was one of those interests I set aside. And now, I decided to pursue it by using my knowledge in digital marketing.

      1. 1

Hi @whosthisisa. I really appreciate your comment. Stick to just one thing seems to be very valuable advice. I have this thought in which I see myself as a generalist (opposed to a specialist) but sometimes I feel like it would be best if I could focus on just one thing (until the launch at least) and then move on. This is what I want to focus this year: launch things. Thanks for that.

        1. 1

          Yes,

When doing a certain task, before I tend to be jack of all trades. And I realized that it's not about how wide you know, it's about the depth of your knowledge.

It's good to learn as many skills as possible. But what is best to learn things that are relevant to one another so you create your niche.

For example, I started my skill set with direct response copywriting. Somehow it overlaps with advertising, so I went ahead and learned costumer-focused design. These two things are important in a sales funnel so I also went ahead and learned marketing strategies.

So, it's really best to focus on one thing at a time and then move on.

Keep us updated with your goals and actions!

          Best

Hi everyone! Iโ€™m Jen. I decided to join Indie hackers because I want to hold myself accountable for my goals. This year, I plan to work on my Spatial Computing startup. I have one simple goal this year and thatโ€™s to launch a product. I plan to post my journey throughout the process. Thanks for creating this space.

Hello. I read a great article on twitter about how to brainstorm great business ideas. That led me to create an account. I was also able to get a great username.

  65. 1

My name is Akshay. I am a computer science engineering student, currently studying in my pre-final year. In 2020 I am basically planning to dig deep and learn about all the fields I am skeptical about for my mรฉtier starting from public relations, business development analysts, community developers to software development. I believe my goals will be more refined when I'll learn about more stuffs along with experience and study and henceforth, I'll be able to set more concrete goals in the future.

Hey! Thanks for the smooth on-boarding!

I'm Albert and I'm not sure what I'm going to get in to yet. I have some itches to scratch, though, so we'll see where I go!

I'm graduating with a B.S. in CS in about two months! I have almost 8 years working in fields tangential to embedded engineering and programming. UI and UX are important to me. Documentation (and reading the docs) is important to me.

Currently I'm interested in the gritty details of operating systems and language design/implementation.

Hi Albert, at which school are you studying

I also like to talk about user experience and web design in general.

On the personal side, I'm into Jiu Jitsu, yoga, calisthenics, and nutrition. I'm pumped to join this community and get to know the people here. I've heard great things!

Hey everyone! I'm Derek, founder of CommComm. I acquired Shuffle, a competitor to Burner, Line2 and TextNow that I worked at back in 2014 as a Project Manager for the design project, and found out it was being shut down.

    My goals for 2020 are:

  70. 1

    Hello!
I am a developer with a regular job, and I've joined to start building some side projects with the intention of earning some additional income.

My idea is to use at least a couple of hours every day, and put some more time in the weekends. I want to try some ideas, check the feedback and learn skills outside of my area of knowledge.

I will try to publish updates and keep up to date with the community on weekends too.

    Cheers!

      Heya K,

Really intrigued on what you're product is since it's in the medical field.

Medical field is one of the fields I am really curious about. Hopefully, with my assets and strengths, I will be able to contribute to your project.

      1. 1

        Hi Isa,

Thanks for your interest. The product is a SaaS Electronic Medical Records for Perioperative processes. It's users are Anesthesiologists and the customers are hospitals and surgery centers.

        Hope that helps.

        Best,

        _K

Wow, that's very nice to hear that you are niche-specific.

Having a specific niche is an advantage because you can easily identify your prospects and their pain points.

          Hope your project pans out.

          Best

  73. 1

    Hey everyone,
I'm a 21 years old Full Stack Developer from Portugal who loves to code, I started my bachelor's in software engineering but I wasn't motivated at all, so i dropped out and started learning online with online courses and made a Full Stack bootcamp(Main Stacks: Java and JavaScript).

At the moment I'm working with a Low Code Technology called OutSystems(based on C# and JavaScript), if you are interested, drop me a line :).

In my free time I'm thinking about learning more about JavaScript(React)and python, any of you know some resources that can help me?

    Thank you all,
    Renato :D

    1. 1

      Hi,

Why is it almost everyone in Portugal is an OutSystems developer HAHAHAHA.

I came across OutSystems because of my cousin.

I'm really curious into learning that low-code platform since a lot of enterprises and companies are switching to it.

  74. 1

    Hey all,

I'm working on an side project called Deembase, which aims to help people solve their legal problems by guiding them through the process and helping to draft arguments. Even though I've been working in startups as a programmer and manager for almost 20 years, this is my first product as a solo founder.

Psyched to participate in the community!

    Chris Hart

    1. 1

Wow, you're project is very contributive to the masses.

I haven't really encountered any similar product with yours.

Hopefully, with my skills and assets I'll be able to contribute to the completion of your project.

      Best

    Hi,
My name is Seungjin and I want to gain the muscle to start something on my own.
Working inside a company enables me to solve complex problems,
but sadly I struggle a lot when I want to start something on my own.
I wish to get the training or the mental mindset to just start.

    Thanks!

I'm building a legit checking marketplace matching sneaker sellers and legit checkers. This will enable sneaker sellers to command price premiums on unmanaged resale platforms without paying the selling fees associated with current managed resale platforms.

  77. 1

    Hi everyone,

I'm a software engineer with over 10 years of experience in several industries (insurance, healthcare, finance, and retail) as a full-stack developer. I landed on this awesome community pursuing my dream of building my own company someday.
Hopefully, I can be helpful to this community and find the motivation to continue pursuing my dream (especially now that I have 2 young kids)

    1. 1

Hopefully, you'll be able to start working towards your dreams.

Do you already have product in mind? Or an industry you want to focus on perhaps?

      1. 1

Yes, I do! Right now I'm working on this landing page for a new idea I have in mind (https://botnow.io/) I'm trying to target small businesses that maybe have a Facebook business page but are not using a chatbot at all. Any feedback would be appreciated.
        Thanks

        1. 1

Hi, so I went ahead and visited your site.

I like how strong the colors are -- definitely an attention grabber.

I just woke up while I was reading your comment and it definitely have woken me up.

Your headline and subheadline needs work.

It's very overwhelming -- too many text.

It also doesn't have a strong appeal to persuade a prospect to continue scrolling on the page. Since you talk about facts and numbers in a way that it doesn't stir any emotions.

For a good headline, you want your prospects to be curious.

You can tell them the benefit of using your using or what problem do you fix.

Just remember it must be short, simple and punchy.

For the subheadline, it's for further explanation. Present your solution in a nutshell.

The point is: your headline and subheadline must reflect your positioning.

For the hero image, when I look at it -- it gave me an impression that it's a chat app but not for businesses.

More of connecting with your loved ones.

So your hero image must be relevant and coherent with your positioning. It must be a visual representation of what the solution does.

The Key Benefits should come before the About Us. Not the other way around.

          Why?

Humans are very self-interested. They want to know how your product can solve their problems.

At this early point, they are not really interested in knowing you.

They want to know what you can do for them.

          Got it?

So for the Key Benefits, you heading is very weak.

          It is not eye-catching.

A good heading identifies to whom the solution is meant for. So that prospects can resonate better with the product and they'll continue scrolling down.

And instead of segmenting it according to an industry. Present the key benefits.

Focus and enumerate your offer. What is the specific value that you can give.

Put a heading to each benefit. And a short paragraph that further explains it.

Remember: The heading must tell them the advantage of your solution.

And before I forget to mention. Great to see that you have a closed caption for your explainer video.

I'll be preparing for a meeting in the next hour. So this is all for now.

But before I go, I just have a question: how is the performance of your website?

Anyways, if anything, you can ping me on my email so I we can jump in an in-depth discussion in relaying your positioning and messaging better to help you increase your conversions.

          1. 1

Wow! I'm impressed with your feedback, it makes a lot of sense, definitely, I will work on those recommendations.
About the performance of the website, I don't have any lead as of today, so far I'm trying to get some feedback and improve the website. I haven't run any type of ads or anything like that until I feel the site is ready to rock.
I really appreciate you took the time to check the website and sent me such amazing feedback, thanks a lot.

            1. 1

              Is the product already done?

The best thing to do right now is be specific on who you are and what you do.

Since it seems like you are on different industries i.e. e-com, healthcare, hospitality, etc.

There are many existing competitors out there, very much similar to yours.

Hence, it is best to niche down to what industry it is most useful yet it gives you an edge.

    2. 1

Don't give on on your dreams (except if they are self-destructive), all the best of luck mate! :)

I'm here to learn, listen, connect and share, as I strive to my 2020 goal of launching my side project business - Team Benefits - and getting 10 clients by December.

    Hi!

I'm a software engineer in a startup which is building a platform on top of Kubernetes to let customers implement their own Heroku-like platform easily. Before that I was at a large company doing Go, Kubernetes, Cloud stuff.

I've been following IndieHackers for quite some time through the podcast. I always have a list of ideas and potential markets but I couldn't yet make the effort. When I was in college, I published an iOS game and it wasn't much of a success but sometimes I miss working on my own thing.

Working at a startup is demanding, so, I'm here more to help other people and learn things from community to apply later when I decide to pursue a side-project. I can be of help for all things you need related to Kubernetes, Go and cloud services like AWS and GCP.

    Cheers!

    Hey there! ๐Ÿ‘‹

I'm a developer turned Product Manager from Spain. I currently work for a startup in Madrid, but I'll soon be moving to the Bay Area to study at Berkeley.

I've always loved Product (I just didn't know it had a name), so I like to spend my free time building little side projects that I post on my website (www.helloleia.com). Most of the projects are meant for fun or exploration, so they don't have a lot of accountability or follow-ups. I'd like to dive deeper into the Indie Hacker community to find out:

    • How community members choose projects to commit to ๐Ÿ’
    • How to get a product out there and get some user traction ๐Ÿš€
    • How to monetize a projects and not die tryin' ๐Ÿค‘

I am a bit of a generalist, so I certainly wouldn't consider myself a tech master, but I am happy to give feedback on products and ideas, and give my thoughts on tech stacks for MVPs.

    Cheers!๐Ÿ˜ƒ

So I am here to learn from y'all. I have a full time job as business leader and the funny thing is no one in my office has the slightest clue that I can code etc..so this indihacker thing is where I become my true self.

    Hey hackers!

    Just joined.

We're currently running an email marketing SaaS exclusively for content creators, MRR is around 3k, with slight fluctuations here and there.

Am excited to learn from everyone on how to scale this to become a million dollar company :-)

I know that's still so far away, which is why I joined IH in the first place -- to learn and connect!

Last five years I have worked in China, now I am working from US and India. I am also working on side projects of my own and want guidance from the community here and also help them in any way I can. Hi Everyone -

Nice to meet you all! I spent the last 10+ years helping to build companies like Hulu, Crunchyroll, and VRV. I'm also an adviser to Headspace and HOMER. I recently left Ellation (Crunchyroll, VRV, Rooster Teeth) after we sold it to AT&T. It's been an amazing ride and I learned an incredible amount along the way. Now I'm looking to start something. I have two ideas I've been tinkering on: one is in e-commerce and the other is in the audio space.

I'm happy to help with questions / concerns around team building, strategy, growth, operations, scaling, financial management, culture, etc. I could use some help refining my concepts and actually going from 0-1. I'm non-technical but I have a lot of experience partnering with product / tech. Always looking for smart, talented people to learn from and connect. It's nice to be a port of the community and I look forward to what's next.

    Good day, everyone.

I'm a freelance engineer by day and indie hacker by night. I've been making small products/side projects here and there, but never made enough money to sustain myself with any of those.

I already launched some projects in the past (like www.fbamonthly.com, www.ashop.co and www.fbacatalog.com) and even made some money of them. This year, I'm focusing on growing revenue from side projects to at least $3K/M.

I'm planning to double down on marking for existing projects and launch couple of of micro-projects additionally.

  95. 1

    Hello Indiehackers,
I am a Software Engineer, I am here to learn and also network. I plan to build and launch a profitable side project this year, I have a couple of ideas I am still validating.

    Hi folks!

Just yesterday launched 4K mockups generator tool - https://www.riseshot.com - totally free, 4K generated images can be downloaded without any registration or payment and obviously... No ADS ;)

This is my 2nd project. First launch was not successful (that was different tool). I do not believe in success with this open, but well, I am curious to try.

I had a need for such tool when building Prestashop Addons - had to generate tons of product mockup images. So decided to build tool for myself.

Images taken from Unsplash - you probably will find some popular images traveling on the web.

    Tech Stack: Vue, Rails, Mysql.

Let me know what do you think or share any feedback about me or project.

  97. 1

Hey there! My name is Nick, and together with my friend and colleague we built an instant meetup application called Vertep.

It was created when we faced a frustration of organising an instant, spontaneous event. Imagine: it is 6 o'clock in the evening after work, and you would like to have a dinner with somebody, watch a movie or just run in a park RIGHT NOW or VERY SOON. You can surely ask random strangers around you or forever busy friends, but that would be awkward ๐Ÿ˜This is how we created a platform which allows you to shout everyone about your intention!

    Key features:

    1. See all events around you on a map in real time.

    2. Create your events and share to your friends!

    3. Socialise with people interested in your events.

    4. Video description (comes this release)

We already have a fully-functional version for Android with all infrastructure and base features.

Even though it mentions Australian market - feel free to download and see if anything happens around + give us a feedback! ๐Ÿค˜

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=vertep.co.vertep&hl=en_US

    Hey guys,

My name is Mike. Iโ€™m a prior military service member and an accounting student at California Lutheran University. I have extensive experience in leading teams of various sizes to accomplish various missions. I thrive off helping people see the better version of themselves through a servant leadership type of approach.

Iโ€™m currently connecting with indie hackers because Iโ€™m getting into the realm of diving into a startup. I have some connections which can provide warm referrals to VCs in the Southern California area and am excited about upcoming opportunities.

I am very interested in seeking out a potential co-founder to partner with another prior veteran colleague and myself. If you feel that you may be able to lay solid groundwork in providing a MVP for public distribution and scaling growth to help secure funding, I would love to talk with you. Experience with HIPAA compliant coding/server work would be a plus as well.

I can also help with leadership, business (scaling products), goal keeping and accountability. Iโ€™d love to provide anyone insight on how to grow themselves as well as helping to direct and manage teams effectively.

I canโ€™t believe that I never heard of Indie Hackers before. But maybe it was because I decided to make โ€œstart upโ€ my guide for any decision I take in 2020. That means to start up any endeavorโ€”from post at least one tweet daily to finally start building a side project related to personal finances.

I recently quit my 6-year job (because โ€œstarting upโ€) and I have mixed emotions but one thing is sure: I feel more creative than ever.

Iโ€™ll be around, reading some stories to keep me inspired and sharing any piece of feedback that can be valuable.

    Have a nice day, guys.

  111. 1

    Hey guys!

My name is Dominik and I am from Innsbruck, Austria (the country without kangaroos but alps and schnitzel). I just finished my Bachelorโ€™s in management and economics.

During my studies, I have been using my leisure time to slowly but steadily teach myself how to code.

I am currently running a film database/community for analog photographers on (https://filmtypes.com/) and have just released a developer tool that helps you see what your app will look on the app store without the need for publishing it (https://www.storepreviewer.com)

I absolutely love the concept of micropreneurship and how IH is helping this community to grow. In fact, I have already spent countless hours on here and on the podcast learning so many valuable lessons from amazing people. Really thankful for this to exist!

  112. 1

Hey all, I'm a designer working with multiple companies on a bunch of new products. One we've recently launched is Mixkit.co - a free video & music platform for creators. I'm new to this community and kinda not sure where to start. Would love to learn more from others start-ups and the people involved. Always keen to share.

  113. 1

    Hi all!

My name is Arie and I love technology and design.

The Lumogarden Project is a suite of applications that support personal kaizen through meditative UI and rich feedback tools. It's all the tools like a todo list or clock or calendar that are standard issue with an OS use but packaged through my design sense. The target audience is people who are frustrated by quirky UI timing features, people with disabilities like ASD and traumatic brain injury, people managing multiple projects, people who are organizing their lives through computers, and nerds who like to customize their setups, like Iterm.

I am currently writing a grant to send to Mercatus Emergent Ventures. If they accept the grant I'd like to hire a full time macOS OR a Web developer who can take my visual prototypes in Affinity Designer and Invision and create a Web client or MacOS app that will be subscription based at a base price of $1 per month. I have some existing code scraps in Python and Elm but neither is currently working.

I would like to become profitable within two years, however the integrity of the product has to come first. I want this to exist in 10 years if we are still using computers to make todo lists and manage scheduling.

Oh and if you like coding with Elm, I especially would like to see this prototyped in a functional language like Elm.

    Hope you are good!

I'm a sales and marketing consultant from India. Been in this industry for a few years now. Currently, I am building an enterprise B2B sales engagement platform.

I would love to help with any B2B sales questions you guys might have (cold emails, multi-channel outbound campaigns, scripts, Facebook ads, influencer campaigns).

Looking to onboard a CTO to the founding team who's got a track record as a full-stack dev. We will also be working with ML use cases like personality detection and tonality detection.

If this sounds interesting to you guys, feel free to reach out to me (email in bio). We are based in India but I'm open to anyone anywhere!

    Hi everyone!

I'm a long time software engineer that launched a social network in 2014 for the imgur community.

It grew too quickly (15,000 sign ups in 24 hours) when i expected it to flop pretty quickly. It wasn't built well and I wasn't prepared financially or mentally so I put it on pause in 2018.

2020 now, i've got my shit together, i've been contracting for a few years and I'm rebuilding the community from scratch.

Everything is being built with the original community in tow to help me build a fun, friendly and privacy first community that makes it easy to socialise.

I'm also documenting e.v.e.r.y.t.h.i.n.g, my successes, my failures, my design decisions and using multiple platforms to get feedback. LinkedIn seems to be pretty successful for this stuff so far.

    My goals over 2020 are:

    • Finish the rebuild of the platform,
    • Move everyone back over to it
    • Start focusing on growth
    • Lose more weight
    • Spread the word

    I can help with:

    • Technical questions (mobile, web, scaling literally anything)
    • Community management

    What I am looking for:

    • Mental / Morale support when things get shitty
    • SEO - Especially link building
    • Hugs
    • Hear about your cool ideas and maybe collab with a few people.

If you're interested in learning more about my journey and what i'm building:

    Hey everyone!

I'm a senior computer science major, working toward my bachelors. I have a big interest in freelancing software work on the side, but I feel like I need a proper mentor since I'm still so new to the tech industry. I've been working with the alumni foundation of my university for about a year where I run our wordpress site that utilizes PHP and a mySQL database. I'm currently skilled in full-stack design using Spring Boot, but I'm working on using the MERN stack so I can build faster and scale better.

    Hey guys,

I'm a software engineer and I'm currently working in the biggest Search Engine company. Recently I started to explore ads/marketing technology and figured out it's best to learn by doing. Therefore I started a small Shopify website to test various ideas of driving traffic and increasing conversion rate.

The website is: https://www.strassflower.com/ if you want to check it out. I just started so it's still not perfect. I've tried some basic SEO, growing IG fans, and FB ads. Over the time I hope to explore / improve with data-driven marketing, and hope to solve some of the pains by building some SaaS product. I'll try to share my progresses, problems, and discoveries with the community.

    Hello Everyone,

I am currently working full time as an Application Architect for a small company that I have been with for 8+ years as a full stack developer and wearer of many hats (server management, infrastructure design, database admin, support specialist, etc).

For 2020 I would like to:

    • get more involved with the programming community
    • regularly produce content for my programming blog
    • work on a side hustle to earn some extra income (consulting, part time work, whatever)

Found Indie Hackers from a youtube video and I am super excited to find this community. The past few months I have been looking to figure out an additional source of income and have been struggling to get traction, in some part just due to time management and balancing full time job and a family.

I recently started a blog and have very few posts so far, but targeting for at least 1-2 post per month this year. Almost have the February post complete and hope to have that up soon. I would love some feedback if anyone has interest.

    Hi Everyone,

I have really learnt a lot as an Indie hacker working on my startup.

I signed up here with a different username as Courtland suggested, to talk about another startup we are building as a team. This is https://projectdabl.com, which uses the DAML smart contract language (of the blockchain fame) to really cut time to market for most new apps. For example, startups don't need to set up infrastructure, expose APIs, create database, manage auth, build authorization logic etc to get started. We just want founders to write their business logic, build a React front end and have a working app to show and pilot within a few days! For example, here's a free trello like workboard and chat app built on projectdabl.com for anyone to integrate within their apps (https://opensaasame.org/)

Looking for your feedback / guidance on our plan and product, as well as offering assistance to anyone who wants to use https://projectdabl.com and get to their MVP faster.

    Cheers!
    Manish

    Hey folks,
I'm a freelance graphic designer and illustrator making a shift to permaculture farming with ideas of starting a design based business on the side. Years of working alone leave me wanting for community and this seems like a great place to connect and learn from others. Cheers

    Hi folks,

I'm a freelance JavaScript developer. I usually work remotely for US-based companies doing frontend with React and React Native. I've been passionate about learning coding stuff languages and good practices but lately, I've been more interested in products and startups.

About one year ago I joined Kickass Tuber, a small startup which was being run by two people who were looking for a developer. Now we are close to launching a new version and it's starting to be time to see what people think about our product. We will release a private beta version at the end of March, and hopefully, we could finally launch on April/May.

I want to share my experiences making the platform, willing to help people and get feedback from the community.

    Regards,

    Gabriel.

    Hey everyone,

I'm a medical student and currently learning to code. Being based in Egypt, I see a lot of potential for startups to really make an impact here. Egypt is very much a 3rd world country; very little seems to be digitalised.

Shoutout to any other indie hackers living in developing countries. It would be great to connect!

I have a bunch of ideas but getting a MVP to market is what I am finding most difficult. Mainly because it's taking me a while to learn to code alongside med school.

Just want to learn more about this community. I am super new to the whole indie hacker world.

    Have a great day!

I now work closely with various marketing- & founder teams coaching them on MVP launch- & growth/scale strategies.

    Experience:
In the past years, I've worked with a wide range of companies including (venture-backed) startups, SME's and multinationals.

    Looking for:
Teaming up with builders where I can help scale (side-)projects. I have a list of own ideas but also interested in getting involved in other peoples (side-)projects.

Hope this little intro helps. If you have any additional questions, feel free!

Hi Rosie, thank you for the warmly welcome words!
I am a no-code true believer, not just because I am not any kind of techy, but just because I firmly believe that the all things are easy accessible and understandable, and so should be about the digital tools and stuffs, too. Sure, there is a deep area where we all need some more tech experienced partners and co-founders and that is the reason for me to explore the indie hackers space. You make a great work!
I wish you a nice day.
    Kind regards, Svetlana

    Hi,

I'm a full stack developer with a focus on front-end development (JavaScript, React.js, TypeScript, D3.js). I've been working at one of the major tech companies for the past several years, and while I enjoy what I do, I think pursuing my own project would be pretty cool.

One of the things I'm fascinated by in the Indie Hackers community are all the non-technical people starting tech-related businesses. I'd like to help non-devs and newbie devs remove the technical barriers that stand in the way of their business. I haven't figured how exactly, but I'm hoping to find some inspiration here. I've always enjoyed helping people, so if you have questions around modern web development (HTML, CSS, JavaScript), please reach out!

Outside of front-end development, I'm trying to foster my creative side. I'm trying to get into 3D art and animation by learning Blender. Given my total lack of background in that field, the learning curve has been pretty steep so far. But I'm making progress :).

    Cheers!

I am a Web "full stack" engineer who has independently designed, developed, and maintained an investment aid product and related server-side systems. I am also a 'lifelong learner' who had an experience in internet-finance. I spent less than a year studying relevant knowledge in the financial field and holding securities and investment consultant qualification certificates. With strong time and project management skills, I was writing about a blog for two months, and has gained more than 2,000 fans. Keep a strong curiosity about new things, use spare time to study blockchains, quantify trading techniques, and apply for invention patents for the company.

    Hi everyone,

A senior software engineer by day, a father of two by night. In my last job, I was one of the co-founders of an IT shop leading the software department growing it from 3 people to more than 15 in less than 3 years. So, I've dipped my foot into the waters of management but god I love getting my hands dirty. Now, I'm just bursting to try my hands on a direct-to-consumer idea that I haven't found yet.

    Hey everyone,

I'm software engineer working in the industry for about 10 months. Almost graduated student in computer sciences, only the final exam (project) needs to be done. I'm in touch with the programming for 4+ years from the high school and this is something that I love and I'm passionate about.

Through all these years I have worked with a lot of different technologies:

    • .NET ecosystem, Java Spring Boot, Angular, React

I just found out about this community and it looks very promising even for the beginners so I decided to give it a try. A lot of useful things are shared in this community and I hope that this community can be important factor for advancing in my career.

I want to become independent entrepreneur and here is a lot of knowledge and experiences from the other users that can be useful. I am always looking for new opportunities and I am open for new contracts, part time jobs, full time jobs, startups, so don't hesitate to contact me.

I believe there will be nice company with the community.

    Hey, hey! ๐Ÿ‘‹

I'm in my second year of running a profitable digital creative studio in Sacramento, CA (https://www.fathom.company/) and am looking into building recurring, semi-passive revenue streams through IP, content, or SaaS products. I have been a web engineer for more than 10 years, but am finally evolving my skills into more diverse areas, such as management, marketing, sales, business, design, content, storytelling, and product.

I hope to learn more about others' endeavors, offer and receive support for budding ideas, and learn more about taking an idea from a small seed ๐ŸŒฑ to a full grown tree ๐ŸŒณ (I also garden a lot, if the metaphors didn't give it away).

Happy to be here and looking forward to meeting some of the folks around here. Cheers!

    Hi everyone,

Iโ€™ve never been motivated enough to complete an app as I am now. Iโ€™ve learned to code on my own, built a few small apps, but wasnโ€™t motivated enough to put them on the AppStore. I started coding my current app 5 months ago - and Iโ€™m still at it. So I went looking for resources on Twitter for solo indie developers and I found this site. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

I plan to launch ๐Ÿš€ my appโ€™s website really soon and begin marketing it before Iโ€™m done coding it.
I also do YouTube videos about what I learn (Swift with Shani) where I shared aspects of the Swift language that Iโ€™ve learned.

I plan to make some new ones about this journey/experiment, as I know nothing about being an indie iOS dev, business or marketing. Should be fun!

If you guys need any help regarding content writing or specifics about Sports Management, I will be glad to help.

I joined Indie Hackers because my goal is to make my blog profitable and earn an income from it. Therefore, this community can be really helpful in sharing stories and learnings and also may be in finding partners.

My 2020 goal is to make at least 500$/month from my blog.

    Hey folks,

I'm a Junior student studying Web Engineering, currently working at an institution which helps students to learn programming and robotics from early age. I am a Web enthusiasist, so I like discovering different web architecture models.

I'm glad I heard about this community on Reddit, as I always wondered where to discuss my "Tech" ideas with people of same interest, as well as see what other people are working on.

Hopefully, by the end of 2020 I will learn more about Web related methodologies and design patterns. Also I started my own Web Hosting company last year, so my goal is to get my first 50 customers this year.

    Hello!

I've been building full-stack web applications since 2008, working remotely since 2009. It's been quite the journey.

I went to school for robotics and embedded systems but went on a long tangent down the rabbit hole that is web application development as a result of my first job, which was to build a web application hosted on private embedded machines to remotely display each machine's health.

It became very clear that web applications were the future, and I became a bit obsessed with determining the best ways to build them. I believe I've finally reached a pretty solid conclusion after 10 years, thanks to the undeniable churn and the crazy smart (and generous) contributors throughout the industry.

My goals these days are to run a business (or multiple businesses) of my own. Building things is quick and easy now. Marketing and monetizing them is next on my things to learn. This community seems like the perfect place to do that!

    Hey guys,

I'm Dave. A Cameroonian operations manager living in France. I built a small company in my native country and shut it down about 2 years ago because of no funding and no way to keep up with demand ( and I think a couple of managerial mistakes too). I went back to the corporate world and now work for one of the 40th next promising french startups.
I like the challenges, the culture and the diversity platform that the company provides but I miss the actual sense of purpose and impact that the startup world provides.
I'm currently learning no code skills, working on a project and hope to have it launched by this summer. Will keep the community updated here.

  159. 1

    Hi everybody,

I still consider myself as developer while these days coding more on business emails :). I designed the core technology of the Platform-as-a-Service that runs millions of containers across decentralized network of independent data center providers worldwide. The platform simplifies complex cloud deployments by automating the provisioning, scaling, clustering and security updates of microservices or monolithic applications. My team invented and introduced "pay-per-use" pricing model in public cloud: so customers pay for what they actually consume, not for the VMs limits.

I has a strong knowledge in architecture design of applications running in containers and in multi-cloud environments. I developed Java solutions that were awarded twice by Duke Choice Awards in 2018 and 2012 years, as well as initiated research and implementations of OpenJDK improvements for making Java more efficient in terms of memory usage and elasticity.

I can be helpful in questions related to the containers, PaaS, multi-cloud, elasticity, clustering, automation, high availability, performance and other similar.

Looking for unique and fresh growth hacks, new ideas in marketing, people with complex tech questions, early testers, and just simple conversations on variety of topics.

    Regards
    Ruslan

I'm on a mission to make people fulfill their potential by reading more books. Which is why i developed the app "Read" (https://getread.app).

My motivation to join IndieHackers community:

    • Partner up with the other members that might want to build something for fun and/or profitable.

I'm interested in finding interesting projects to work on and grow as a developer! I'd like to help other people out with their projects and start one myself eventually.

    Cheers,
    Brandon

    Gooood Morning, Rosie:
My name is Glenn Benavides. I am half Costa Rican, half Japanese. I've lived many years in both countries. In both, I have family. I am Professor of Neuroscience and Statistics at a University in Costa Rica now. While teaching, I went through the whole major of Software Engineering and have studied Solidity and Ethereum for a couple of years too. And, right now I'm also building the dream of a life in the form of a tech project: a Blockchain-related news broadcasting service. I am the Chief Editor. I write news articles as parte of my job now. I am lucky to be part of an amazing team that are building this service together: GLOBAL CRYPTO NEWS. Our Team has been together since 2017. However, we launched our project just a couple of months ago. We are just starting now. We plan to work hard for the years to come and make our news service unique and extraordinary.
Thank for you this space! I'm honored to be here!
ยกGracias por este espacio! ยกEs un honor estar aquรญ!

    Hey Guys!

I'm Garrison and I'm a developer by trade and indie hacker by day and night.

I'm currently in the process of getting my business (Opel.org) off the ground. I have my first paying customer and I'm trying to get to five this week!

Opel is a tool to help local businesses to better engage with their customers. A lot of these businesses are flying blind, having no means of contacting their customers except through ads. They use to have social media, but the algorithms have choked them out. So we've enabled them to send text messages both one on one and in campaigns, and we have actual accounts for their customers.

    Where I can help:

    • Technical issues - I'm a JS developer by trade (React, Ionic, Angular, React Native, Node, Firebase, etc).
    • eCommerce - I've been in eCommerce for most of my career so I know the ins and outs pretty well.

I am looking to start business around coding interview prep. It's been my personal pain point and I have learned a lot recently about this topic and I am willing to share my knowledge on this topic.
    Cheers!

Hey guys my name is Anthony Then.

I am currently working at Nationwide Insurance as a senior mobile developer primarily using Flutter, and Spring Java back end as well as docker/kubernetes technology, I also have a lot of experience in web decent but believe I can learn to build anything like most of you do ;)

I have currently been thinking of just leveraging some of those skills to make my dads contracting business in NYC have a better market. Some other ideas I have is to market any house remodeling I do in my house on some websites too.

So far my thought process has been build the site, add some analytics, and do some combination of google/facebook ads. If anyone wants to chat or anything let me know, this has sparked a new fire in my life and I am so determined to make this work to help out as many people as I can!

    Hi everyone,
I've developed various side projects over the last two years whilst working freelance for web development agencies.

My main goal for 2020 is to reach $1000/MRR with one of these projects.

I'm hear to learn more about the growth and marketing side of things, it comes less naturally to me so reading other indie hackers stories is very helpful.

Hi, mi name is Raimundo and i been working as a growth marketer for the past 3 years in one of the biggest fintech in latam. Recently i quit my job because i wanted to learn more about coding and no-coding business, and eventually start my own so i can have more time for myself.

My biggest struggle has always been to came up with business ideas, im just not confident enough or. For me, once i have a base or something from where to work i can follow a process of iterate the business, measure whats working and growth a business and is much easier. But i found so difficult to came up with a new business idea, just the initial first kick.

For this reason i will force myself to came up with a new idea everyday, as stupid as it could sound i will post my idea until i could something what i can work ok and validate.

    Hi all,

I'm a software developer (iOS) from Hungary, based in Berlin, soon to be a digital nomad.

Recently I started building an app that helps people live more sustainable lives. I plan on releasing it in the next months. Besides that I'm learning web dev and starting my blog to document my dev journey.

I've had a couple relatively successful side projects before, and I've always wanted to "do my own thing" so when I saw this site, I felt like I found my place :) I've been an observer for 1-2 months but I decided I want to be more involved.

I wish you all great success in your endeavours, keep killing it!

    Hi Everyone!

Iโ€™m a software sales guy based in Atlanta. Iโ€™ve cofounded and failed before partly because of personal tech challenges. Started selling for an early stage startup and helped grow it to over 7 figures ARR with all outbound sales. Iโ€™m hoping to partner with a team looking to grow!

Hi - I'm Miles. I've been teaching for almost 20 years now in Rhode Island, and while I've always dabbled in HTML, CSS, C++, JS and some Google Scripting - my coding/development experience is quite low, and never professionally developed. I've got some ideas for apps/software/businesses and wanted to join up here to see if I can move out of the education market where red-tape, low-pay, and endless loops of redundancy exist - and start making actual money helping people!

    Thanks!

    Hello, my friends,

My name's Alex. I'm not yet exactly sure what Indie Hackers is about or what I should say here. I'm not 100% what I personally want to do either.

What I know is that I want to learn more about web development so I can use that skill to put myself in a good financial place (without getting a job). So I guess I should fit in around here?

    Anyhow, we'll see.

P.S.: I'm currently kind of stuck on authentication stuff. (Also, I use PHP)

    1. 1

It sounds like you'll fit right in.

We have a Developers group that you may want to have a browse of, or ask some questions.

Virtually everyone here is trying to figure out how to make a living/products/business so that they can live the life they want. Of course what people want varies, and that's cool too.

Indie hacking is a journey with no set outcomes, it is what you end up making it.
