Welcome, introduce yourself! (Week of Jul 5th)

Rosie here -- the Indie Hackers community manager. Welcome! 👋

This short guide is meant to help you get the most out of Indie Hackers.

First, introduce yourself!

Indie Hackers is a community of people helping each other build profitable businesses and side projects. The key word here is "community." Don't be shy!

For starters, take a second to introduce yourself and share your goals in the comments below. 👇

Just say a few words about who you are, why you're here, and what you hope to accomplish or learn in 2020.

Take a moment to say hello to someone else as well!

Dive into learning.

We've interviewed hundreds of successful indie hackers. I recommend reading a few of their stories. It's a great way to get an overview of what's possible.

@csallen also puts out podcast episodes if reading isn't your thing!

Next, get started!

There's no time like the present. Check out the "Start Here" page for a list of practical steps and articles that can help you take action.

Not only will it help you get started, but it should also introduce you to some of the best parts of the Indie Hackers community.

This is just the tip of the iceberg! If you're ever feeling lost or confused, post in the Meta group or tag me (@rosiesherry) in any comment or post.

Don't forget to introduce yourself and say hi to someone else below! 🤗

Hi there - I'm Pedro. I was an entrepreneur for 18 years. I've built several types of companies, my most recent exit was a niche streetwear brand that I sold in 2016. Currently I help founders navigate their startup journey with a hands-on incubator program headquartered in Miami but open to companies around the world.

    1. 1

@psostre what is the name of your incubator in Miami? I'm not too far away

    2. 1

I live in Miami, very interested in this. How can I check this out and/or apply?

  2. 7

Hello, everyone 👋My name is Sergey, I am web developer and entrepreneur. I work a lot with sole founders as a hired developer, and can't wait to start my own product soon. Before I had experience mostly with affiliate projects, but really want to dive into product owner stuff. Currently live in Ukraine, but waiting coronavirus madness to over to move to Europe, hopefully soon 🙌

Hello! I'm Ellie, I'm a software engineer and recently started building up a side business. I've been following some blogs online for inspiration and happened upon this community, hoping to talk to some like-minded individuals!

    1. 1

Being a software engineer , what are your thoughts on building a micro Saas platform ? I am not a developer so I am looking to get an insight from a software engineer.

    2. 1

Hey Ellie. What kind of business are you building?

  4. 5

Hi! I'm Thomas, until recently I was a product marketer at Google. Now I'm building a platform to make the best academic research in marketing more easily understandable and applicable (e.g. we 'know' that adding a picture of yourself in emails you send to customers makes the receiver relate better to you, increasing their satisfaction).

I'm hoping to make testing new marketing methods more about 'standing on shoulders of giants' and less about reinventing the wheel each time.

Glad to join this great community of like-minded people!

    1. 1

Hi Thomas, I imagine an obvious use case would a split testing product with contextual tips that feed in this valuable advice, via an API.

HubSpot would be a stand out competitor in this space.

    2. 1

      This sounds incredible
      What is the site?

    HELLO,

    I'm Ray.

    I'm building https://neonmap.world

It's a web application where you can find neon arts/signs by locations. Yes, neon is a dying art, disappearing and being replaced by LED, but I see the value in it simply because I find neons fascinating.

    1. 2

I like this. Products motivated by personal passions are always cool.

      1. 1

Thanks, I'll keep up! would love to connect on Twitter @NeonxRay

    2. 2

Hi Ray, I understand this is a problem with bodegas in New York.

Have you considered teaming up with professional photographers and making them available on Pixabay, Unsplash and such?

      1. 1

@WayneSmallman never thought about that. would love to hear more about how to do that.

        1. 1

Hi @raykudo, if it were me, I'd begin looking for photographers in the nations with the most images — or perhaps the ones you'd like to explore.

You're chronicling the demise of a long-standing tradition, so perhaps find photojournalists who could interview store owners.

Of course, this would be a lot more work, and it could push things a little too far from what you're doing!

          All the best.

          1. 1

            @waynesmallman
Thanks. It's actually interesting to have interview pages for small business owners like why you chose neon signs instead of LEDs and stuff. Appreciate your suggestion!

            1. 1

We know that gentrification is playing some part in this, too, and that's a sore point for some people — something that could draw attention to what you're doing.

              1. 1

gentrification is spot on! didn't even know this word, appreciate.

    3. 2

I wonder if identifying neon signs would be a task that was reasonably easy to train an ML on as they look very different from anything that occurs naturally. With Mapillary.com now publishing all their data you could build a huge data set very quickly. I also wonder if it would allow for the validation of "false" Mapillary submissions.

      1. 1

I am currently using Google Map API. I'm not into Mapillary but looks like it works well with Mapbox? No idea how to integrate.

  6. 5

Hi! I'm Lesley, a Software Engineer based in SF working on an MVP (with Flutter, Python, AWS Lambda) as a side project while I search for something full-time to support me and excite me!

    1. 1

Ooo nice, how is Flutter going? What are you building?

      1. 1

Thanks! :) At first I wasn't sure how I was going to enjoy another cross-platform framework but honestly I'm actually really enjoying it. I feel like my previous native mobile dev experience definitely made it easier for me? I'm building an automated networking app that suggests networking connections for users.

  7. 3

Hi all, I'm Bartek, a Director of Engineering at GitLab where I head our efforts in Growth. I love working with startups and mentoring founders on how to grow and succeed. https://twitter.com/bartekmarnane

    1. 3

hi Bartek, would love to hear your opinion on my new product, graphteon.io (a graphql backend as a service)

    Hey everyone!

    I'm working on https://plumvillage.app/

It's a free mindfulness app with hundreds of guided meditations and practices offered by Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh and his monastics.

The app has been downloaded by 180,000+ people so far. Keen to finally join the IH community :)

Hello Everyone, my name is Brian. I am a aspiring game developer. I am wanting to create a game and launch my company. I am currently working with. A good friend on the game while learning about the game development industry.

I am always looking for new ways to reach my goal whether its tutorials or articles or podcasts. I am currently working a full time job, family life, learning the game dev stuff all while reaching many different things to start the company. Time management is a big factor in my life.

I am very glad i found this place.

  10. 2

Hi, my name is Amin. I'm in the last year of my PhD, based on the UK. My research focuses on deep learning for computer vision. I have been working on some side projects. I'm here to connect with people and learn how to move from academia into building a business.

  11. 2

Hi I found this tweet rt by AJ https://twitter.com/RydenMartin/status/1281355582050578432?s=20 .. so here I am. I am trying to develop my web dev skills and grow on ruby on rails. At the moment Carrd helps me publish stuff without being an expert in programming. Also I am working on a side project that may be yuge! but more on that when it releases.

  12. 2

Hey, my name is iain, I live in Queenstown, New Zealand. I've attempted a couple of businesses in the past with little success and a lot of learning. I've also now spent several years in management in an Adventure Tourism company to test my skills in leadership.
Now I'm getting back into the side hustle game. Only I'm going offline for the first one.
I ordered the Snapmaker 2.0 last sept and get it next month. I've been teaching myself CAD and plan on producing 3d relief maps using sustainably grown native woods, plus a few other things. It's been a fun ride so far, but really looking forward to getting the machine, making some pieces and getting out there to the markets and see what sells.
Once i know what people like, I'll take it online and into all the souvenir shops I can find.

    1. 1

Nice! Do you have a site or still waiting until you get the Snapmaker?

      1. 1

No. I'm trying to learn from past mistakes ;)

Creating the site and the marketing all the other things are "fun" and give you a sense that yo are doing something. But ultimately they distract you from you should be really doing.

Getting your product in front of people and getting there feedback.

        The plan is

        1. create several variation models in Fusion while I wait for my snapmaker (currently doing)
        2. produce a couple of each variation
        3. go to the local markets on the weekends, see what sells, talk to people
        4. iterate on the designs and products that people like
2-4 should take about a month, 4 markets should give a reasonable indication.
        5. build the website (keep it simple.. shopify etc)
        6. keep testing designs then start getting them into shops
        7. as it grows, buy a bigger machine
        8. global domination....
          or something like that ;)
  13. 2

Hey all, I'm Bryan and I'm a UX & UI Designer who knows a fair bit of Front-End Development and some CMSs.

I live in Kansas City, Missouri and I want to make things better by making better things.

    See what I did there?

Hi! My pen name is Frosti, I am a teenager diving into the world of coding just a little late and using the internet for maximum compatibility and connectivity (minus social media). I have always done creative projects in the real, but I look forward to creating a strong digital presence and becoming ambidextrous! I've tried blogging and such before, being encouraged by my mom; but being me, I traveled the hard way around. See my first proper landing page at https://frosti.carrd.co
    Fare thee well, Frosti!

Hi Indie Nation - I'm Aaron, a non-technical, business/marketing minded founder based out of Delray Beach, FL. My company is Roomaters - a platform for helping people find compatible roommates to live with using some fancy tech and personality testing.

Joining Indie Hacker to hopefully get some early feedback/beta testers for our new mobile app, talk growth tactics, network with marketers/tech people, and possibly even find some talented individuals who believe in our mission and want to join the team! (doing this alone is harddd)

Looking forward to connecting with some of you soon. Don't hesitate to reach out!

Hello! I'm Enrique, I'm a freelance product (UX/UI) designer. I have an online academy for designers. I love experimenting with all sorts of different projects and ideas... One of the ideas I am testing right now is YoungMarcus.webflow.io (daily stoic jounaling topics).

I help them create and launch their businesses (From [Phase 1] idea validation, positioning and market research ,[Phase 2] Web design and Branding to [Phase 3] marketing strategy and customer acquisition planning.)

Hi there, I'm Janel. I'm currently based in Barcelona. I'm pretty new to this space but have created 3 no code apps and am working on a few more projects. I have a bias for launching fast and learning by experimenting.

I'm a marketer at heart with a love for marrying data and market trends into actionable insights. So excited to join this creative & driven community!

    1. 1

Hi, Janel! Do you have links to your projects? What platforms are you using?

  18. 2

Hey guys! I'm Catalin, currently a lead dev at a startup.
However, I recently build a sudoku puzzle mobile game with the premise that it should be accessible to everyone, even the less tech-savvy type.
I'm looking to connect with people and, in the process, learn how to grow this app of mine.

  19. 2

Hi everyone. I'm Todd. I work in finance, and advise a few friends in the startup scene.

I've been lurking on IndieHackers for months, and recently joined so I could promote my hobby project:
    https://tinyletter.com/constraints/

    Pleased to meet you all!

Hey ya'll! I'm Jon - bay area tech product manager turned Memphis middle school teacher. Hoping to join the two worlds, turning my experience in education and software into some cool edtech micro-saas products that make the lives of teachers and students better. Currently working on an automated workflow tool for teachers while diving deep into distance learning... let's connect and make some cool stuff together!

    1. 1

Hi, Jon! Such an important focus regarding tech and teaching.

      1. 1

Most definitely! And a lot of opportunity to solve problems using smaller, simpler solutions that don't require teachers to implement (and subscribe to) a comprehensive app/service. Through my time in the two industries, I've noticed overlap with investment bankers and teachers/students... the less disruption to their workflow and the higher roi on learning curve to productivity with new tools, the more likely the tool is to stick.

        1. 1

‘the less disruption to their workflow’ such an important thought. Adapting workflow can be hard!!

HI IH! I am a Software Engineer turned Product Manager currently working in the mobile app industry and working on a wide variety of products. Keen to get involved in this community and start chipping away on some side hustles!

  22. 2

Hi everyone! My name is Bien, I’m building an app & website for my startup letsreinvent.org - looking forward to exploring Indie Hackers!

  23. 2

Hi everyone, I'm Jabed a polyglot Software Developer working in a multinational RMG company. Currently developing Full-Stack Web and Mobile Applications with technologies like .NET CORE, React, Node.js, MSSQL, MySQL, ReactNative, Native Android.

Beside day to day job I always wanted to develop some online service-based products/services as my side hustle and wanted to start a freelance career.
But I think I am lacking the knowledge of what it takes to successfully launch a side hustle product. So I think my search for a community like Indie-hackers came to an end finally.

    1. 1

I really like your landing page, you've got a clear value proposition and describe your product features well. I'm not familiar with GraphQL enough to be able to comment on the specific technical barrier you're aiming to solve.

      1. 1

Sorry I am not sure, if you're replying to my comment. @bmarnane
Though I didn't share any site to visit but you can visit my personal site.
Which I recently built with Gatsby, GraphQL and React.

Hey y’all, back at it again (prior attempts at www.alltheguides.com and www.featurefocused.io). I’m a semi technical part time indie hacker. I’m working on “tinder for art” which is a follow up to a joint project I worked on almost 20 years ago which was a wysiwyg editor for digital art galleries. Glad to be part of the community!

    1. 1

Also featurefocused.io, what a great idea! My co-founder and I were just complaining about the rubbish way that we are collecting our StartupSchool user interview feedback. I've signed up for the alpha. We'd love to try it out.

      1. 1

Hey! That’s great news but I don’t actually see the signup?! Could you send me an email - [email protected] - and we can get you going. Thanks!

    2. 1

Tinder for art! What an awesome idea! High res - beautiful pictures, swipe left / swipe right. My father has tried to help my sister sell her art before and became convinced that this was a hugely underserved market.

  25. 1

Hey @rosiesherry and everyone in the IH community! My name is Michael Terwindt and I’m a freelance Growth Marketer. My side hustle and passion is Validation.run - a service to test new business ideas. We help entrepreneurs measure demand from real customers and learn how best to reach them. I'm excited to have found the IH community. Looking forward to growing with you all and contributing wherever possible. Cheers!

EDIT: Forgot to add my goal. I want to get to 5 figures revenue per month!

  26. 1

Hey everyone, my name is Kay and I'm a software engineer and entrepreneur. For the past several years I've been working on various mobile apps and side projects. I've been a reader of Indiehackers for quite some time but finally decided to create an account to get more motivated and committed. Hoping to offer both my perspective on experiences, and get some inspirations and tips from this community.

  27. 1

Hi everyone! I'm Glenn. Been in software and web development for 15 years, but just getting started as an indie hacker. Found this community through my love of (perhaps addiction to :) ) dev/tech podcasts and found it really inspiring. Hoping to learn a lot from all the founders and startups here.
Recently been working on a project with a partner: www.ecomdiscover.com (check it out if you have a minute). It's a community-driven reviews project for e-commerce newbies and professionals looking for top-rated tools & services for their business.

    Excited to join this community!

I believe the key to decentralizing the global power structure is in the investment of tech companies and services in smaller countries. Along with educating the people of countries in coding and programming. Looking for clients and collaborators to help change the world :)

Hi friends! I'm Yu. I am a Software Engineer working at Google. I am looking for opportunities and ideas for building my own site and potentially growing it to a business that supports my financial health. It might not be easy because I work on the infrastructure side instead of the product side :)

    1. 1

      Hi, Yu!

Is there a particular area of interest that is of intrigue to you?

  30. 1

Hey! 😄 I'm Amalie! I'm an independent game developer. I come from a writing background, and have written professionally for the video game indsutry. But now, I am working on my own first commercial game. Excited to share some feedback and stories, and get some in return. Cheers, everyone! 🙌

Hey everyone, My name is Bobby and I'm a medical student. I love studying medicine but I personally want to empower people with medical knowledge so that they are aware of how their lifestyle is affecting them, but also what they can do the enhance their health. I am currently working on an app that I believe will help people to do this.

In the meantime I might start a newsletter on substack to provide people with evidence based medicine to elevate their health, so that people will be aware of new innovative research that is shown to support certain habits. Each newsletter will probably be 5-10 minutes read with evidence and simple ways to implement these habits into your life.

Hi everyone, I am Lance. I design and code. I specialize in lettering and brand identities (https://www.lancedraws.com/).
Overall I like building and making things. I like to learn, create, and touch everything that piques my curiosity. I just graduated from my engineering studies, so I have a lot of free time. I am thinking about creating courses plus building an agency.

I found this amazing community through Twitter, it's awesome to see what people are building!

Hi There, I learned about IH from a recent group session of Y Combinator's Start-up School. I am a female founder of a tech start-up that automatically organizes parents photos, videos, media, into categories like, birthdays, holidays, school stuff, vacations, etc, that are easy to find and share privately w/ friends and family.

I have a prototype I'd like to share with IH parents feedback, etc.. I don't want to post and break any rules though so I'll hold off...
Looking to connect with fellow IH community members!

Hi everyone, I'm not new per say, but I needed to take a step away to reset. So I'm back with the hope of a fresh start and optimistic perspective.

I'm concentrating on learning to code (more seriously) and to launch a side project. This site is fantastic and I plan to share my journey and also support others as best I can 😻

Hi everyone, My name is Henry and I'm a founder of an online scientific magazine. I'm looking for advice and I hope that someone can help me. I am thinking to build an online service (mainly a marketplace) for connecting scientists to businesses with the aim of developing a community. The main goal is to find the best human resources (researchers) for companies in less time. Should I start a validation idea? If so what is the validation idea process? Please take a look here https://www.indiehackers.com/post/the-commercialization-of-university-based-research-idea-validation-8563696c23
Any advice will be appreciated. TIA

Hi I'm Zach👋! I'm a computational linguist, student and hot sauce fanatic. COVID changed my life, throwing me into the thick of things and bringing me to finally call myself an entrepreneur. Many of my 'side projects' never struck me as potential businesses, but communities like this make me think differently. I'm operating a startup studio where a few friends and I have 80 interns and 8 companies in our "portfolio", building meaningful software products.

Love meeting people, making new connections and exploring side hustles. Shoot me a message and let's chat! :)

Hiya, everyone! I'm Shalvah. I feel so lucky to be here. Been following the Twitter account (and occasionally lurking on the website) for a while and I love all the gems it shares. This is one of my best Internet communities. I'm a developer—built Twitter bots @this_vid and @RemindMe_OfThis, and also http://oldtweets.today, but I'm really still just getting into indie hacking. My most recent project (and first real "product") is http://usetentacle.app. I have a full-time SWE job, though (no degree).😅 Currently based in Lagos, Nigeria. Looking forward to learning a lot here.💃

Hi, I'm Robert, a software developer and AI researcher. I find it interesting to build products that can uplift/improve health care, especially for developing countries.

    1. 1

Hi, Robert! What an amazing emphasis. You may find Watsi and team intriguing. What are you currently building?

      1. 2

        Hello there!
Well, for starters, I built something - https://parasightai.com/
though I know it's still early, but I think this area can scale over time.

Right now my objective is to build tools/software that compliments the idea, I'm developing my own open source annotation tool for vision AI tasks, see
        https://github.com/officialrobert/annotator-labeller-Annovision

Hi guys, I'm Kirill, I was an entrepreneur last four years.
I've founded legal tech companies in Russia and launched a big IT project - well funded by VTB bank (one of the biggest banks in Russia) - Housing ecosystem. Now, using services by this project one can buy an apartment in Russia online without even going outside the street.
Now I'm developing customers for my next project - labor tech. The project will help to find new job those who have lost their jobs due to crisis. Will be glad to discuss the prospectives and ideas about it.

  64. 1

Hi guys :) I'm an SEO and have been for the past 3+ years, but now I'm interested in building my own business - first I'd like to start with building an affiliate site around a specific sub-niche within the self-improvement field and then, when I get some authority and see how the community breaths, I'd love to create my own product.

  65. 1

What a cool way to start - hi everyone. I follow Indie Hackers for a while [podcast, twitter, newsletter] and told myself few times I wanted to join and be part of the community. I'm finally here.
My name's kev, I'm currently building an app to help people own less stuff. We call it https://mystvff.com - and we're looking for minimalists to help us improve the current beta.

Otherwise I'm writing from Lisbon, used to live in 8 different countries the past 10 years, I became a father last year, I'm a skateboarder since my teenager years, I love the outdoors and I play chessboxing.

    1. 2

Hi, Kev! Nice mission. Thanks for sharing.

This is interesting as I’m creating an app for fellow sailors to document their inventories (ie things) in an app. This is the focus for safety reasons and to run a tight ship.

To show everything one has (living on land) is pretty cool. I imagine you’ll be linking up with donation centers for clothing pickup, etc? Tap a button and give to others.

Maybe paradoxical for this community, are you exploring living with fewer apps as well?

      1. 2

You imagined right Greg - thanks for the kind words 😉 I haven't thought about the 'boat-usecase' not being a sailor myself but looking at your app, this totally makes sense, well done ✌️

And to answer you: yep I'm trying to limit my amount of apps as well [I find that 'fewer is better' is a mantra extremely powerful in every area of our lives].

Where are you these days? [geographically speaking]

        1. 1

👍👍 currently cruising the Chesapeake Bay. Now in Maryland.

Hi I'm Isha. I'm hoping to find some tips and inspiration on how to grow SAAS business, find some partners in the cybersecurity area to promote each other and make some friends at the same time :)

  67. 1

    Hi everyone!

I’m Casper (from Copenhagen) and I have just made the jump from a full-time job to trying to build an income doing my own projects.

My goal for 2020 is to generate an income of $10,000 per month by building 3-5 web apps and monetizing them.

I’m currently working on my first project called Side Project Ads (https://sideprojectads.com/).

My project solves my own problem by making it easier for Indiehackers to monetize their (side) projects.

First step with Side Project Ads is trying to make it easier for everyone to find relevant affiliate programs incl. how much they pay.

I have build the website using Webflow and I believe the no-code movement will change how we build tech products. If I can build it - everyone can :-)

    Best, Casper

    1. 1

      Hi Casper,

Checked out your site, an interesting concept. I‘m playing a bit here. Maybe there’s a way to offer a widget creators can embed where it shows all of the tech used for their site/service and it be a commission link. ie ‘made with webflow’ is commission link in addition to other services you use.

  68. 1

Hi, @rosiesherry, and thanks for the chance to share!

I'm Wayne, and I love to learn (as I imagine is the same for a lot of people here on Indie Hacker), and some time ago I found myself in need of something to help me make sense of everything I was writing and learning, but was more than another digital shoebox of unrelated things.

So the plan is to make the Under Cloud the literal and figurative missing link in the evolution of doing research!

At the moment, I'm working on the market fit, but that's taken a bit of a hit with the pandemic, so it's slow going.

But I'm here do what I love doing, and that's to learn, and perhaps share some of what I've learned.

    All the best!

  69. 1

HI, I'm Momchil. I've been a front end developer for the past 15 years. I've worked on various solutions and applications for various companies over the years. Hello! I'am Akhil, business development professional with extensive experience driving partnership and developing and implementing go-to-market strategies. I have data science background i.e. developing predictive modelling and etc.

I have been working on an idea for some time with the purpose of creating level playing field for all students (irrespective of student's social, economic and demographic background) and making them future ready. I have just finished wireframe/ prototype of the product.

I'm looking to connect with people and, in the process, learn how to move from wireframe to creating MVP that I can take to the clients for beta run.

  72. 1

Hey all, I'm Sam. I'm an Aussie based in the UK and a digital marketer that has been working on my own side projects for a few years now, but finally got one of them ready as an MVP and ready to try and see if it will take off.

Not sure about others on here, but I've been reading startup content for years now, but now trying to do it myself and finding it challenging to get my first 100 users, as well as to position my product as it is different to anything out there.

As such, hoping to get some great tips and feedback from the community, whilst also adding value where I can.

    1. 1

Hi, Sam! Do you have a link to your prototype or MVP?

  73. 1

    Hi!
I'm Sergey, a software developer for already 2 decades :)

    Beta is live here: myvesselapp.com

For the past 10 years I’ve been a partner in an adventure company based in Costa Rica. In addition to this, I’ve sold concepts and was a partner in an app development company in San Diego.

This community appears to be intriguing! Great to be here with so many interesting individuals.

I work in the mobile game industry as a Product Manager and I'm an experienced, former Game Designer. I persistently try to come up and create new ideas for mobile games and apps in order to provide myself with a living income. Doing this I always keep in mind that quality is better than quantity.

Hi, I am Partha. I was previously in venture capital and also worked as a co-founder in a startup. I am building a mobile app that will help entrepreneurs make business decisions using assessments and strategy frameworks. Happy to be a part of indiehackers:)

    1. 1

which frameworks are your favourites in terms of moving the needle for entrepreneurs? whats your opinion on common strategy frameworks used by mgt consultants?

      1. 1

Most strategy frameworks used by mgt consultants won't work for early-stage businesses. The ones that do, are frameworks like decision trees, mece & matrices (like the ansoff matrix). Some of my favourite frameworks, useful for early-stage startups are:

        • funding napkin from Point Nine Land to assess a startup's funding eligibility
        • price positioning matrix
        • value proposition canvas

I'm Justyna and I'm a growth hacker. I love my job because I get to help awesome businesses grow sky-high. But sometimes I get stuck. Sometimes I just can't move the needle and I don't know why. That's why I'm here. I want to get inspiration from the community, get a fresh eye on my projects and maybe even make some friends :)

    1. 1

      Hah, we can be buddies.

Maybe check out the Growth group? We've just launched the ability for people to create their own groups, there's a few related to 'growth' - content, quora, etc.

Which industries you've worked at so far and which channels you've found the most effective in terms of outputs per money/time spent?

      1. 1

I've worked mostly at e-commerce and for financial platforms. So far the best ROI I got was from email marketing & automation. Takes some time to build a list and set up the right automated flows but then it all runs on autopilot and it's so worth it.

Currently, I have a totally new challenge. Working for a privacy-friendly email provider. We're struggling with bringing new paying users. We tried some advertising on Quora and private search engines but the target audience is apparently allergic to ads. So I'm looking for some alternative solutions to get privacy-aware folks to give this product a try. A very high abuse rate doesn't help either.

What's the best place to start on this platform to get help/ feedback and perhaps gain some happy users?

Hey everyone! I'm Alex, a college student studying UX design from the US. I run a podcast that interviews people doing things against the status quo... building a business - choosing an odd major - pursuing music... etc. :) I'm excited to help other podcasters out and learn from them, and help this community out in general!

Anyone on this site would be a perfect guest. I'd be happy to have you guys on to push whatever project you're working on!!

    Hello fellow inde hackers!

I'm Si, an Electronic and Computer Engineering Masters student from Ireland.

I want to be part of a team in Europe that will engineer solutions for Space. I see the likes of SpaceX and RocketLabs and I want to see that kind of initiative here in Europe. Looking forward to explore this community more and get chatting to some like-minded individuals.

    Hello everyone,
    My name is JC.
I am an entrepreneur and I have a software service business on the side. We are a total of 3 founders. My other 2 co-founders are working full time and I am working on a part-time basis(roughly 30 hours a week) with a full-time job on hand (mainly because I live in an expensive city). We have a team of 8 people currently + couple of freelancers on the side who are working for us. Here is our website in case you are interested: https://aveosoftware.ca/?ref=IH. The business is doing good right now and we are growing almost 50% on a year but we want to build couple of ideas on side and I am going to be that person who will be building and launching the ideas.

So essentially I am on IH to build and launch products. I can build products but I do not know how to market those products or even how to get the first few customers. I am really hoping that IH community would able to point me in the right direction.

I am really glad to join the community of like-minded entrepreneurs.

Checked your website - would change your front banner by replacing your company name into telling what is the transformation process your clients go through, and instead of saying what you provide I would say which pain points you remove and which benefits you give.

Rough example without knowing anything else about your business:

Transform your next big idea into beautiful software that your users will love

Stop wasting time and money on solutions that don't scale or serve users. Help us build software that makes your business rock!

      1. 1

Awesome. Thank you for the quick review. I appreciate it.

Hi! I am Tim. After 2 years of building, I am in the process of quitting my daytime job and moving on to start working fulltime at my project ShoppingResult.com. I work in e-commerce for over 10 years and in all those years I never found decent and affordable solutions to track competition on one of the biggest e-commerce channels; Google Shopping. So I built it myself.

I am already around here for two years but never made the effort to introduce myself or get involved.

      1. 1

Thanks 😊 it was a legal app that told employees if they were being treated unfairly in the workplace and then connected them with an employment lawyer if they were. The core function ended going to a non profit that gave legal advice to employees.

Hi everyone! I'm a new college graduate seeking some inspiration and motivation from current and aspiring entrepreneurs, creators, developers, etc. Seems like there's a wealth of inspiration here!

Throughout college I worked within the US startup ecosystem and became fascinated with entrepreneurship and angel investing. I have ambitions of being an entrepreneur (to some capacity) in the social impact/sustainability sectors. Really, I'm looking to become involved in some cool projects and learn a lot.

As my hunt for a job in the startup sector was halted due to the pandemic, I've started my first project of creating a website/platform geared towards chronic illness and Lyme disease advocacy. If anyone has interest in that area give me a shout!

    Annie :)

Hi! I'm Sonat. I'm an entrepreneur from Istanbul/Turkey. Found my first startup at the freshman year of college 7 years ago. Since then I had 1 pivoted (video network with 20M users in 9 countries), 1 failed (marketplace for small scale farmers) and 1 exited (corporate innovation studio) startups in different areas. Currently I help large companies to start and grow their own startups (or conversion of their products to digital services) in the region. I'm willing to learn more about #nocode and eager to tell you about the regional developments and opportunities. Glad to be here!

Hi I'm Antarctican. I've run a successful MSP for 20 years and I have an idea for a software product that fills a niche in education that does not exist anywhere in the world. This is pre-MVP. I'm stuck on how to have it developed. I'd like to try a no-code/low-code tool to create a presentation of what I'm talking about but none of those tools can even do what I need (and I've looked at all of them afaik). Stuck is an understatement, my goal here is to find like-minded people who have solved this step I'm at and offer advice. There is plenty of advice on before and after the stage I'm at, but I can't find any help on the stage I'm currently on.

Hi! I'm Karla, I'm business administration student in Peru. This year I had many changes in my life, that helped me realize it is time to start entrepreneurship that generates value in society. I like fashion, but I know this industry is very competitive and undervalued, I would like to start something that helps regain its value, being aware of the social and environmental impact it can generate. So if you're interested in this topic, just comment and we can share it.

hi my name is frianto, software engineer, currently learning business. Now building graphteon.io , a graphql backend as a service. looking for partner in business and discussion

    1. 1

      Welcome, @frianto.

I like the product idea. Just looked over your website. I'd add a sticky "join waiting list" cta in the top right corner.

You also have 2 competing actions "join waiting list" and "request a demo". I've found in the past that focusing on a single call to action has resulted in more conversions!

Hi everyone! I'm Joao! I am a Portuguese software engineer based in Lisbon. My favorite part of programming is the ability to create, and I have had some side projects for some time. Recently I started developing wopa (editor.wopaapp.com) as something that I started and stick to, in order to see where I can lead it to. I've been following IH in Twitter for some time but now I decided to join the community and meet amazing creators!

  212. 1

Hi all, I'm Dima, a software developer for the last 12 years or so.
I'm looking to create interesting side projects that will hopefully reduce the amount of hours I invest in other people ideas.

Hi! I'm Simone, I have an electronic engineering background where I did more hardware hacking than software hacking and now I work as a business analyst/management consultant (sorry! Don't be too hard on me!). I'm a big fan of tech and its potential - but not necessarily a fan of coding per se (at the moment!), so I'm reading and learning all about no-code tools. I'm here mostly to learn from you all and see if I can take one of the many ideas I have forward as a proper project :)

Hey! I'm Dan, a strategic web designer from the UK. I've been freelancing for 3-4 years; it's been hard and almost giving up a couple of times. I'm slowly starting to develop a network now and I'm here to try to expand this network. My goal is for my family and myself to be financially free.

    Hello
I'm Anirudh, I've been a software developer for the past 3 years and have really enjoyed and felt challenged by the work at my company, but lately I've been having this urge to start building things on my own away from the corporate management and deadlines. I've been reading articles from paul graham and reading inspiring stories from other Indie hackers so I've finally started working on a side project.
I've been a backend and clojure developer for the most part, so I'm dabbling into ios developement and building small tools to fix problems that I face everyday.

  219. 1

Thank you for the guidance! looking forward to being part of the community!

    Hey, I’m Matt 😀

I’m exploring how I can turn my passion (health + fitness) into a lean, profitable business.

One problem I’m interested in is meal planning. I’ve struggled to find tools that can assist me in creating athlete-quality plans (i.e. precise measurements, diet preferences, nutrient variety, etc.) for myself.

Has anyone experimented with or been curious about meal prep/planning?

  255. 1

Hey! My name is Bree, I am a Project Coordinator (Web) and am starting up jemsplash.com

Jemsplash is a online marketplace for digital creators. This is an alternative to Payhip & Gumroad and guess what? Gumroad's CEO donated $1,000 to this platform.

What makes Jemsplash different? Not only will it have lower transaction fees, but we will implement more upsell features in many dimensions - but not annoyingly. I am rolling out the MVP hopefully by next month. I have been taking the time to learn growth hacking, copywriting, marketing, and creating a community - all VERY important things.

If you're a content creator, you belong on Jemsplash!

    1. 1

wow, Gumroad CEO donated $1000? how and why?

      1. 1

Hey! Well how? He donated to my gofundme :)

Why? He wants more marketplaces online for digital creators and personally I agree.

  256. 1

Hey there! I'm Abdellah, I'm a Full-stack Js Developer (react, react-native and node)

I recently started my indie journey by creating my first product - a fintech react-native template. Check it out @ react-native.design

My next product is rn template builder. It helps developers quickly create and sell their mobile templates.

    1. 1

Hi! This looks really cool. How many customers have you gotten so far for react-native.design?

& How's your template builder coming along?

      1. 1

Hi @rasreee i'm still waiting for the 1st customer. But i'm not too stressed about that because almost no one knows about it.

My marketing plan is the following:

        • Improve SEO on the website
        • Build an actual audience (1000 followers in Twitter)

I'm on it for the long run.

The template builder is still a target. I gathered resources and couple of scripts needed to make it work. But making it 100% automatic is not easy. So i'll probably start by making a free course on "how to build your template and sell it".

After that, i'll build the tool.

P.S: the audience is the real MVP

    Hey everyone!
I am Sourabh a fullstack developer from India. Currently working with Java, React and node.js at my day job and side projects. Have developed android apps in past.
Currently working on https://jsontoolbox.com to solve my own itch.
I like working on software products that solve someone's problem be it big or small.

    1. 1

I love this, super simple, very clean. Before I discovered the command line app jq I used to google "json lint" and use jsonlint.com all the time. It's a amazing how these little tools can just make your life easy if you don't have access to a non-windows shell.

      1. 1

        Thank you @etothepii !
        Pro tip: you can add a link in your logs to JTB for any json by adding it to url as a parameter. Try --> https://jsontoolbox.com?json={"test":"sample"}

Hi, I'm Vishal and currently working as a Product Manager at a company called Techspace, which is essentially WeWork for tech start ups with office spaces in London and Berlin.

Currently working on a side project www.veggiesteadycook.co.uk - vegan & vegetarian meal kits - in London.

My goals are to initially build a side hustle to be large enough to quit my job, whilst continuing to work part / full time. And of course, if I can achieve this successfully, to then build up the business either by bootstrapping or raising investment.

Keen to connect with other founders, especially those in and around London, either working on their own ideas or looking to potentially partner up with others.

  281. 1

Hi, I'm Jovan and I'm a designer. Besides designing logos for companies, I try to start new side projects on the side. This is one of the rare places where I instantly decided to sign up because there is just so much value in reading about your successful projects.

In 2020 I plan on starting a profitable subscription-based design service and already have a plan in my head. I'll post updates on my progress.

One of the projects I started a few years ago helped a lot of developers with their MVPs. If you need a free logo while testing your ideas, visit https://logolix.com/.

Looking forward to being a part of this community!

  282. 1

Hi everyone! I'm Jeff. I work as a full-time software developer and recently stumbled across this community. I want to get more into learning the business side of software since I'm just a code monkey right now.. anyway. Always up for discussion and always interested in what people are making. Feel free to reach out ;)

  287. 1

Hey folks, in the last few months i have engaged with an insurance company, and found that the is an opportunity in a agricultural parametric insurance application due to regulatory changes. I have developed a PoC (backend and mapping dashboard for single user) and i am looking ways to develop a scalable API that can be connected with enterprise systems (B2B) but also with a frontend/UI for the B2B2C space. Something like a boilerplate SaaS with API and UI functionality. Also looking for cost effective ways to distribute insurance products independently/without partnering with insurers (they are often to slow to decide). I have 15+ years experience in the space industry and love applying satellite data to solve problems, and love to develop technology remotely and be close to nature.

Hi people, I’m Matt, Aka SketchyMedia. I’m a full stack designer / brand builder. My mission is to help redesign the universe and I’m joining here to share my experience in branding, marketing and web design. I’m here to learn, connect and hopefully help others too!

I’ve built and sold a few brands and businesses, the last of which was a digital marketing agency. As a recovering marketing-aholic, I've moved onto Reboxed, a recommerce and e-commerce platform hoping to make refurbished tech sexy and sustainable, in a bid to help reduce global e-waste. Amongst some other side projects i spend what’s left of my time learning and geeking out on SEO, webdesign, no-code and YouTube. Feel free to hit me up about anything design and branding :)

    1. 1

Hey Matt! Fellow SEO geek (and designer) here. What are your favorite SEO learning resources? I'm a fan of the ahrefs blog and the Moz courses. Any others you like?

      1. 1

Hi guys, would be great to have a group to share best SEO resources - most of the stuff out there is totally useless, as people who know the most are not selling that info to others but growing their own businesses. Finding good resources for learning is not easy!

Hi All, Im Elijah, a Tutor from Melbourne. Im glad to be on here and learn, and potentially help whoever I can with tips on running an online clothing business, not an expert but happy to help where I can.

At the moment I am working on a labour of love called Swift, which is like uber eats both for non-fragile products on-demand salable workforce and infrastructure, with super express timeframes for local and long-distance delivers.

Feel free to reach out to me about anything.

Hi, everyone. My name is Naka, I'm a healthcare professional - looking to build a web and mobile application that helps make prescription medications more affordable and accessible to Canadians.

  301. 1

Hi! I’m Rob. I’m a Canadian musician, short-filmmaker, full stack developer, and the co-founder of a website called Housecreep.

I’ve retrospectively shared my experience on the product page for Housecreep, if anyone is interested in reading it. It was launched in 2013 and has gotten a lot of media attention over the years, due to the unusual nature of it.

I’m a bit of a hermit and I enjoy working solo. I like testing the limits of what I can accomplish on my own. Sometimes I fall flat on my face, but I enjoy the process of learning new things, even if the projects themselves don’t amount to much.

I’m happy to have stumbled upon Indie Hackers, as I enjoy reading about and learning from others’ experiences. I’m more of a lurker than a poster, but will do my best to contribute here if I can.

Hi everyone, Jesse here. I'm a web programmer for 10+ years and I want to get away from current job. Why? salary is good enough but it's chaos amongst the leaders and I'm tired of doing things which I'm not enthusiastic of. So, trying to learn something from IH and then start my own business. In the end, quit the job.

Hi Jesse! Welcome to IH and I wish you all the best in starting your own business.
