Welcome, introduce yourself! (Week of Jun 7th)

Rosie here -- the Indie Hackers community manager. Welcome! 👋

This short guide is meant to help you get the most out of Indie Hackers.

First, introduce yourself!

Indie Hackers is a community of people helping each other build profitable businesses and side projects. The key word here is "community." Don't be shy!

For starters, take a second to introduce yourself and share your goals in the comments below. 👇

Just say a few words about who you are, why you're here, and what you hope to accomplish or learn in 2020.

Take a moment to say hello to someone else as well!

Dive into learning.

We've interviewed hundreds of successful indie hackers. I recommend reading a few of their stories. It's a great way to get an overview of what's possible.

@csallen also puts out podcast episodes if reading isn't your thing!

Next, get started!

There's no time like the present. Check out the "Start Here" page for a list of practical steps and articles that can help you take action.

Not only will it help you get started, but it should also introduce you to some of the best parts of the Indie Hackers community.

This is just the tip of the iceberg! If you're ever feeling lost or confused, post in the Meta group or tag me (@rosiesherry) in any comment or post.

Don't forget to introduce yourself and say hi to someone else below! 🤗

    Hello Everyone,

I am Akshay Deo, a computer engineer from Pune, India 🇮🇳. I currently work at Slack as Staff engineer. Mainly focusing on platform backend. https://akshaydeo.com enlists everything I have done in my career. Really excited to be part of this community :).

    1. 1

Wow that's impressive ! Still working on ur 12x12 ?

      1. 1

Yes. With complete ❤️. This month I have participated in a month-long hackathon related to the new open banking system that is being introduced in India.

Also working on last month product Obliq (which btw need some more alpha users)

    2. 1

      Nice portfolio!!!!

      1. 1

Thank you so much Philip 🙇‍♂️

    3. 1

Wow Akshay, crazy how many things you have already built and created 🤯
I also love the personal website with a detailed summary, quite enjoyed reading it.

      1. 1

Thank you so much for your kind words 🙏.

    4. 1

Wow! you have one heck of a portfolio. What do you think about collaborating on a bot that could diagnose you if you have the symptoms of COVID-19 or not. If it sounds cool to you, email me at [email protected]

      1. 1

HI thank you so much for your kind words :).
I am currently occupied with my work and side projects, so won't be able to invest time in something else 🙏

    5. 1

Hey Akshay, Nice website. Any plans for 4th startup, in India and for India.

      1. 1

        In the long term, yes.

In the short term, the aim is to improve product building strategy. I think I need some more experience and understanding before starting the next startup journey 🙇‍♂️

    6. 1

Hi akshaydeo, greeting! I have couple things to ask about slack developer policy. May I drop an email to you?

        1. 1

Turns out I couldn't find your email anywhere at your personal site. Mind to write it here?

  2. 7

    Hello all,

    I'm a developer on a small team with a fun-sized product.

It's like Trello, but for timelines.

Check it out! Join the literally sixes of thrilled users!

    1. 3

Great landing page, it lays out the features and value prop beautifully. So often people don't manage to explain what the product even is, but you guys have nailed that!

    2. 1

Hi! I checked out your product and it looks pretty cool! I would have loved to get some insights on the implementation and developing process.

      1. 2

The short answer is "lots and lots of iteration" :)

Our team is 100% remote, which forces good communication.

I think that aspect of development definitely informs the product too.

        1. 1

How many people you got working on this project?
Lots of iterations sounds like Agile development, which I like a lot. Which technologies have you used? I'm currently using React for front end and trying out Node for backend since I decided to integrate with google's firebase.

          1. 2

The front end for peachyplan is react. We are also leveraging ant design quite a lot.

Our dev team is 3 people. Honestly, for a small team with high trust, little formal process is needed.

Funny you mentioned firebase integration. That's on our roadmap :)

  3. 4

    Hey indie hackers,

My name's Johnny. About a year ago I got my bachelor's in physics, but have been learning web development on my own for the past couple of years in hopes of starting a business.

I'll probably be on here in the near future asking you all how the heck to learn GCP!

  4. 4

I'm John from Surrey, UK. I've developed a SaaS booking app for businesses who book out their services. It's called That Booking App, https://thatbooking.app.
It launched in January and I'm looking for ideas on growth and future dev ideas.

    1. 1

Nice to meet you John! This looks cool, can imagine salons will want a way to get directly to customers and help them beat (what I hear) will be waiting lists for getting haircuts and such once everything opens up on Jul 4th...!

      1. 1

Hey Jane, thanks for you encouragement, yes I'm hoping to get salons and barbers on board. I've got one barber signed up so far, so the only way is up!

    2. 1

Hey man, that's a cool looking app. It's clear what you do and who you do it for. The name is a clever way of getting search hits for "booking app for physiotherapists" etc.

It took me a little while to figure out the pricing options. I think the flexible plan would benefit from more clarity, and perhaps laying everything out in a feature grid showing what's included (with ticks and crosses) might be a bit easier to digest.

While your in-person services businesses recover from lockdown over the coming months, business might be slow, so you could invest some time into content marketing, eg. tips on running service businesses post-covid would likely be a useful traffic generator. Looking at the customer journey including all the touchpoints in the sales funnel would be useful - I think some design tweaks and improved copy would be a good focus area.
Best of luck with the project.

      1. 2

Hey Mr FeelGood! Thanks for taking the time to look at my website, I really appreciate it. I've been playing with the layout and content for a while and sometimes it takes an outside view to see the obvious. Thanks!

    3. 1

That is a cool booking app!

      1. 1

Thanks Mohammed, it started off as a side project and has taken over most of my time.

        1. 1

    Heya friends, I'm Lex!

Cheat (@cheatdotdev) was inspired by a tweet. https://twitter.com/azideMakes/status/1264574835264491521

Some tools and apps out there are just amazing. Notion, Airtable, Stripe; these are all transformative to integrate into your business. They feel like cheating. But there's a whole segment of small businesses not using them, and not getting the efficiency they provide.

    So, I'm building https://cheat.dev.

The mission: Cheat provides an opinionated framework for non-(technical/startup-minded) people that know they want to start a business, but look into the steps and just see it as chaos. For offline small-businesses. For tradesmen, contractors, and other doers.

The Vision: You have an idea but aren't sure if it'll work. Don't know if you have enough savings. Cheat guides you through the questions you need to ask, and gets you connected to apps and services we know will provide value for you today. Recommendations grow as you grow. If you and Cheat decide it's not a good fit, you can take a look at pivoting, or finding a more experienced and connected mentor, because now you have some numbers and data.

Cheat is under active development, with MVP opening in about 3 weeks.
Our mailing list is available today at cheat.dev where we pass along what we've learned.

You can find me at https://twitter.com/azideMakes, and I'd love to hear from you there, or here!

    Be well! -Lex

Currently @fedeguss (my partner) and I are putting together La Hackería, a community in Latin America where hackers are made. It can take many forms, in many different places. But its first iteration is a coding bootcamp where students get practice addressing real world problems. This will take the form of a 12-week course where the first 8 weeks we impart industry standard courses in web development and data analysis, taught by world-class staff. The final 4 weeks, we connect our students with local academia and organizations to develop a working application or automated analysis tool.

We plan on bringing both local and international students and faculty together in Latin America, and we will leverage our connections with industry, academics, NGOS and students to do so.

    Pura Vida,

I'm Miljan from France. I have a business management degree and a data sciencist degree, but I don't want the classical and boring career path. I worked as a digital consultant and I am now a freelancer in Data Science.
Currently I'm trying to grow my father's company (small type of business) and my goal is to launch a product (as a side project) based on machine learning with an affiliate type of business model. Indie hackers seems to be the perfect place to get inspired and test my current idea.

Hi all, I'm an engineer by trade but have recently transitioned to product management and UX for my team as we've grown.

This month marks the 1 year anniversary of bootstrapping my startup with two cofounders, and I'm happy to say we just raised a small preseed round to focus more of our time on our own products instead of engaging in custom dev work to pay the bills.

I'm finding a lot of fulfillment in thinking about the high level product vision and also getting my hands dirty with wireframes and prototypes. Excited to join indie hackers to learn from you all in this journey!

    Hi Everyone,

Why I'm here: I want to spend my time here trying to help with your projects' regulatory, legal, policy and operational problems. In return, I'm looking to learn more about different pain points for ideation on my next project.

About me: I've spent the past 5 years working with businesses on the above in London and Europe as a practising lawyer. 2 years ago I set-up a regulated financial services business with little funding that now employs 7 people and is growing. I've taken a step back from the financial services business to focus on my legal practice, go back to steep learning curves and re-engage with ideation. I've also written a couple of books.

    Looking forward to learning.

Hi everyone - I am Krishna and I am on a 6-month sabbatical after slogging it out for well over 15 years (BS, MS, PhD), R&D, and then as a product manager. My work has been focused around video (compression & delivery) and I want to take the time to learn new skills (as in the AWS ecosystem, Big Data, etc).

I have decided to work on an online video editing/conversion tool to clean up your videos and upload them to different channels like YouTube, Vimeo, and other platforms. I am formulating everything and hope to put up a landing page this coming weekend when my wife takes the kids to her mom's place :)

I am new to IH and I would like to bounce ideas and get feedback from the community! Thanks, all!

    Hi Everybody,

My name is Dan, I'm learning to code on my own. I discovered indiehackers by chance and found it to be an amazing source of inspiration, since I my purpose is to eventually work independently. I am glad to have found a community of like-minded people!

I'm aware of the fact that most users of this site are experienced developers and also that I don't quite fit in there, but I already have some basic knowledge of the basic langages of web development programming. My aim for 2020 is to discover the global market and see how to get started.

The truth be told, I don't really know yet in which field to specialize, but I'll work on some inspiring project and I know I'll find my way. Anyone willing to share this journey with me or to give me some piece of advice is welcome to contact me!

    Hi, I'm Sub!

I'm a full-time software developer and I'm very curious to explore the SaaS space. I'm a new indie hacker and have joined to connect with likeminded creators.

Outside of work, I'm building my first SaaS product called TweetPop. It is a web app which will allow drafting and scheduling tweets. I've got many ideas for the app to give it a USP. For now, I'm putting the pieces together and iterating on ideas.

My priority at the moment is taking time to understand the market by studying startups, marketing and SaaS models.

My goal is to launch TweetPop for public use in September 2020.

Very excited for the journey ahead!

I'm building a 'competitive open knowledge application platform' basically an Airbnb for consultancy knowledge. If the concept works the network effect will be extremely powerful we believe. Our status is that we are currently finalizing our MVP to test if our idea will work. https://test.thinkbase.com/

My current challenge, however, is finding a technical co-founder. Preferably in the Netherlands. That's why I signed up for this website...

    Kind regards,

    Hello Everyone

I'm a developer looking for having my own way in life

  162. 1

    Hey 👋

I have been building products and creating something new since 6 years old or so. In the last years mainly focused on software products, e.g. we built an app for self-servicing in a shop https://zbasket.eu/

Learned web development myself over 15 years ago (php, sql, javascript, html, css). Haven't been actively coding in the past 5 years and feel that I can contribute the best as a product manager (non-tech role).

Thinking of catching up with coding this year (laravel, tailwind, vue) and keep building useful products and services. Having more ideas than I can build myself or in our little team.

Joined Indie Hackers to learn from others and share my experience. Best way to reach me is via Twitter DM.

    Hello Rosie and friends,

I am Antoine Marguerie, a product designer from Switzerland.
I’m partnering with Alexis Bernard, a developer, and together, we run a small web consultancy https://basesecrete.com specialized in Rails applications.

On the side, we’ve been trying to build our own products, with the secret dream to just do that one day.
We are making https://rorvswild.com a performances and errors monitoring tool for Ruby on Rails applications.

Looking forward to learn from you all.

Hi, I'm Qin, a journalist based in London. I recently launched a newsletter on the highs and lows of personal finance on Substack: http://moneytalk.substack.com/

It's my first newsletter and is also a significant tangent from my usual beat. And I launched straight into the paid model. So... I'm having to do some very quick study on how to make it a success.

    1. 1

Hi Qin! My project is motivated by a perceived lack of understanding most people have in investing their money, so I love your newsletter idea! Financial literacy (at least in America) is woefully low.

Mind if I get your feedback on my project? It's a tool that I built for myself to find companies to invest in; my goal is to sell it to other people (somehow)! Normally a 'fund manager' would charge fees to take someone's money and invest it. My hope is that through transparency and empowering folks to invest themselves, I can lower some barriers and de-mystify the process!

      1. 1

I'm not covering investing (yet) but would love to take a look. Can't see your product yet though?

I'm Solaiman Kmail, a Front-end engineer, from time to time I build something small and publish it on ProductHunt https://www.producthunt.com/@solaimankmail/made

  166. 1

    Hey Indie Hackers!

I'm a software developer interested in building a project that I actually have a stake in. I've been a professional developer since I graduated with a CS degree in 2012 (and for a few years before that as a freelance web developer), and have worked in full stack, back-end, and front-end roles. Currently I'm a back-end developer and team lead building Spark analytics with Scala. I love the idea of a building my own product. I'm hoping to learn:

    1. How to better develop my own ideas
    2. To partner with other developers and founders with interesting ideas
    3. Or to just gain some insight into how this whole product development process works

I doubt I'm alone here in feeling a little frustrated with implementing the ideas of large companies (whose direction I often disagree with) and wanting to take more of a personal stake in what I create. Looking forward to learning from (and hopefully contributing to) this community!

    1. 1

Hi, would love to connect. Where are you based ?

    Hi there,
I'm Nico a web developer based in London.

I've started investing a while ago and found it very difficult to navigate among different ratios and numbers.
One of my year's resolution includes the creation of an application that helps people with that by showing graphs, charts, and teaching the meaning of each value.

Looking forward to learning from this community.
    Have a great day!

Really excited to join this community as I am looking to sharpen my community building skills, improve my podcast, and learn new no-code skills that will FINALLY (as a non-technical guy), enable me to test out some of these ideas in my head!

    Hi Everyone,

I'm Ingrid. I help students improve their problem solving and thinking skills through one on one online tutoring and and small group studies.

I want to make math accessible to everyone so that they no longer feel confused or frustrated.

My goal in 2020 is to develop this pathway of problems that anyone can follow to become good at math. I'm here because I want to build an online platform with the most amazing math problems in the world - clear, simple, easy to understand problems - that take a student from the basics of math to college preparedness, and although I have the math problems on paper, I want to learn how to start building the site.

  186. 1

Hey! I'm Di a software engineer with a background in graphical design. I'm thrilled about what creators do for others. how they share, teach, and show everything they know. I want to be around people like this to be able to learn and share. In 2020 I want to establish a community around two topics, software design, and soft-skills.

  187. 1

Hi Everyone! Really excited about this whole community that I just discovered. I’m currently in LinkedIn’s sales organization and really enjoy my Job, but also love real estate and personal finance. I find that I have more energy and drive around those topics than anything else I do.

I’d really like to build some sort of content/coaching/product business in the personal finance space helping people develop basic financial literacy to live a better life.

I’ve already been helping friends and family here and there and found that I really enjoy it. I’m also a licensed realtor in Utah (soon to be licensed in Georgia and Florida) and hope to incorporate that knowledge into what I offer.

Looking forward to learning from and building with you.

    1. 1

Hi! I've also just recently joined and while my main passion is in the software development sphere I really resonate with the desire to help people develop basic financial literacy. Hi, I’m Chris from London. I have been working on a lightweight e-commerce platform as a side project for the last few years, and have a few small clients using it. https://www.bdgr.co.uk

We’re looking to focus on it more this year, market it better and get more customers on to it, while carrying on with our day jobs until it’s successful enough for us to focus on it full time.

Hi All! Newbie here, looking forward to getting involved with the IH community. I've been an eCommerce guy since I first started selling things online in 2001. Since then I have done all sorts of B2C eCommerce roles as well as being a digital nomad while writing content and my last two full-time in-house roles have been as an eCommerce manager at multi-million pound pure-play eCommerce businesses.

I'm currently working on an MVP for a productised marketing service for eCommerce businesses. It is something I have been considering for the last couple of years but after being made redundant as a result of COVID-19 I am using it as the catalyst to better things. Hopefully!

My name is Dan and I am working with a colleague to create a new Venture Studio. We've been providing software development services for over 15 years and we wanted to do something different. I enjoy the creative process, learning about new ideas, meeting new people and I'm willing to help out in any way I can, outside of working together within the Studio.

We are working with two founders now and are looking to bring our third on in the next week or so. It is exciting and a little bit intimidating because of the nature of the start-up and venture capital worlds, but we know we have a lot to offer and are eager to meet, talk and work with smart, compassionate and passionate people.

My goal is to share the idea of what we are doing, help out in areas where I can and maybe collaborate with a few good people on their venture. Be well! :-)

I think that in order to start something you should reflect not only on what to start but also on your role in this startup. Do you want to manage your business or be a software engineer there? Depending on your role, you can find some other people with ideas and desire to start a business or a website or something else and build it together

Hey Everyone, my name is Adam. My story is one of following my interests, learning by doing, and challenging myself. The most impactful book i recently read (and part of the reason why I'm here on IH) is Dark Horse, by Todd Rose. It's a very interesting and practical book about prioritizing fulfillment and I can't recommend it enough. On the surface, i am not your typical IH: i work a banking job and have no tech experience. But after a few years in the industry living the "dream they sell you" and finding little fulfillment and excitement in my work, i noticed a growing interest in tech, scifi, and engineering. The crystalline moment was when i read Dark Horse.

A few years ago (around 2017), I noticed a distinct shift in my view of the world. I saw everything as a problem/solution pair. It was exciting at first, i was in this euphoric state of mind coming up with endless ideas for startups, but eventually it consumed my thinking and became a burden. I tried to develop a process for quickly testing then ranking my ideas, which failed. I resolved to simply work at them slowly but surely and getting feedback by friends and family. Then i discovered IH.

Looking forward to collaborating with you on my projects. I will spare you the details of all my ideas and share themes to my interests:
    -planting trees,
    -storytelling and confidence,
    -fintech/smart contracts,
    -bridging virtual and in-person communities.

      Hi Adam,

Great to hear your little story. Looking forward to connecting to you.

Hello Everyone - I'm Eric Bell, a social networking and community expert and I'm also the founder of CEO Crossing a CEO & Founder's podcast/learning community. We are in pre-launch mode. Would love any feedback you have. You can learn more at www.ceocrossing.org - my goal is to get 1,000 paid members by this time next year.

First reaction, mind you my personal background is heavy in design & marketing, I like your landing page overall. Good messaging, nice intro to Paul and highlights the benefits of joining well. There is, on safari at least, a grey block loading underneath the intro to your host Paul. Is an image supposed to be loading here, it's just above the header 'Why Join CEO Crossing"?

      1. 1

Thank you for reviewing my website - We are already creating a new site, that is focused on our strategic partners and benefits of the community. I'm not sure why there is a grey block loading - unless it is the podcast player? It should load without problems, thank you for noting this! I will check into it. Is the offer compelling?

    Hello everyone !
Due to the Covid-19 crisis, I took time to step back about my career as Sales & Marketing manager, and rather focus on what I really enjoy in life, which is I guess related to creativity and UX/UI design. So I used my quarantined time to dive deep in nocode, especially webflow and its "ecosystem" (zapier, airtable, ...), my website as Digital Designer will be life anytime soon and I would love to get some feedback 😬
Oh, I'm also trying to express my creativity in baking pastries 😋 here is my IG : https://www.instagram.com/gustomise/
Excited to be part of this community 😁
