Welcome to Indie Hackers! 👋 (Week of Feb 2nd)

Rosie Sherry @rosiesherry

Rosie here -- the Indie Hackers community manager. Welcome! 👋

This short guide is meant to help you get the most out of Indie Hackers.

First, introduce yourself!

Indie Hackers is a community for people building profitable Internet businesses. The key word here is "community" — to get the most out of IH, you'll need to speak with and learn from other IHers. Don't be shy!

For starters, take a second to introduce yourself and share your goals in the comments below. 👈

Just say a few words about who you are and why you're here. What do you hope to accomplish or learn in 2020?

I encourage you to respond to others as well.

Dive into learning.

We've interviewed hundreds of successful indie hackers. I recommend starting by reading a few of their stories. It's a great way to get an overview of what's possible and the huge variety of paths that different people take.

(@csallen also puts out podcast episodes if reading isn't your thing.)

Every founder begins with a different level of knowledge, but learning never ends. It's good to do a little bit of reading upfront, but don't get stuck in a pure learning phase for too long and let that hold you back!

Next, get started!

Once you've got a little knowledge under your belt, the best way to learn is to do. And there's no better time to do than right now.

Check out our "Start" page page for a list of practical steps and articles that can help you on your way.

Not only will it help you get started, but it should also introduce you to some of the best parts of the Indie Hackers community.

This is just the tip of the iceberg, but I hope it helps you get started!

If you're ever feeling lost or confused, post in the Meta group or tag me (@rosiesherry) in any comment or post.

Don't forget to introduce yourself and share your goals below! 🤗

    • UX, digital marketing, hacker not an engineer, integrator, background primarily in technology consulting (enterprise content management, search)

My current project is https://neverastray.com where I'm making custom, physical maps for doomsday preppers.

    Hi All,

I’m Matt from North Carolina in the US and I’d like to become an indie hacker the way that definition reads on one of the first pages on-boarding! I’ve got some web developer experience that’s honestly a bit old school, and I’ve got some people management experience recently. My background is in environmental control systems for commercial and industrial buildings.

I am David from Sweden. In 2020, I hope that I will be able to narrow down all the crazy ideas I've had for businesses in all manner of fields to some of the more viable, given that I will probably need to bootstrap any business that I start. I will also discuss with my employer, so that I don't get into a problem with no-compete clauses.

I'm joining Indie Hackers to exchange knowledge and inspiration with people who ultimately have the same goal as me. Thanks for taking the time to read this and happy hacking :)

Hi, I am Rodion. I first thought that I will further my pursue a career in Academia, in the field of Neuroscience. As I graduated, and also during my studies, I realized that I love solving problems and building awesome products. So I got my feet wet in the tech startup industry. Then I learned that I much more prefer developing over managing. So I started to intensely learn to program. Currently, I focus on JS/Sass and plan to learn React. Now I am looking for projects to get my hands dirty and gain more practical experience. I hope to find a project to tackle on to.

Hi 👋, my name is Jérémy.

I am a software engineer from France 🇫🇷, working as a freelancer.

In the past few years, I've increasingly specialized in building cloud architectures on different cloud providers.

My goals by coming here are to get inspired to launch my first profitable side-project, Revolv, and to help anyone than need support with their code or cloud architecture.

Revolv tries to solve a critical problem for all new projects: creating a complete cloud architecture on AWS, GCP or Azure, in seconds.

Let me know if I can be of any help 👋

I'm a React developer from Paris, freelancer since 2017, and mostly working remotely.

I have a very flexible work schedule, and like to build my own path. I try to keep some time off to run various experiments.

I'm good at my job and know very well the React tech ecosystem, but I'm quite introverted and it does not help to get known. I've recently been publishing daily in French technical content on LinkedIn and been successful so far, and I'm going to start a french React newsletter soon.

Once I have an audience I'll probably try to build products, as I think it's more easy t sell anything if you already have an audience to sell to :)

  85. 1

Hello IHers! I am new here. My name is Ryan and I am from the Philippines, i hope I am not the only one here from the southeast part of the globe :) I discovered IndieHackers from Youtube of all places and decided to join this community. I currently work as Software developer for a mega huge US-based tech firm in the evening and I do Airbnb hosting in the morning. On weekends I work coding on my side projects (snail pace progress on this). You can also tell, based on my lifestyle I am currently single if you, #ladies are available - feel free to message me (I also go to the gym 3 to 4 times a week)

Reason for joining IH is I don't have colleagues/friends interested in discussing starting a tech business someday (different interests I guess but they're great people!). I hope I can find that here...That's it for now - see you around!

    Hey there,

    Hi there!
I'm from San Juan, Philippines an analyst by morning, and a coder by night building MVP products for my start ups, focusing on cloud based-Pharma and Travel/Collaboration.

I want to take this to the next level by focusing in building my own products and I just found out the IH community is a good place to start with :)

Hello, i'm momen from Alexandria, Egypt.. i used to be a doctor -pediatrician- , had trouble communicating with my kids school, so i developed a small platform to ease communication with school, thing got viral through my hometown i started generating over 6digit income, so i quit my job and became a lone wolf :). continued improving on platform until it became true complete elearning solution. yet i'm still in phase of depending on word of mouth and only serving my hometown for now :/ ... looking forward to expand maybe next year ? who knows.

15 years of an 'IT career' in Australia has led me to really ponder... could I make a leap of faith from enterprise tech to a project or startup that I could love? I am expecting I'll get inspiration through IH, and that I'll start to believe it could really happen to me.

I'm in the early stages of product ideation and I'm also interested in partnering up with someone if their product/project gels with my values. So, I'll be looking for anything in the Looking to Partner Up group that floats my canoe, or perhaps it'll be me posting there if I turn an idea into a prototype!

    Much love, Lee.

    Hello there,
My name is Alp. I'm from Turkey, currently studying for Boğaziçi University master's program.
I'm in exporting business. I manufacture what i have in mind and sell them abroad.

Other than that I get a lot of ideas and I'm dedicated to bring at least one of them to world alive.

No coding projects I've done but still if you have an idea pitch it to me and I will refine it easily.
I know I must find a co-founder with technical capabilities but I have trust issues, because I heard this a lot; someone paid our programmer big bucks, so he left... :I

I have a startup project about this as well. :) I just need a clear roadmap and to BELIEVE that it will work.

    Nice to meet y'all!

Hi folks, I am Vinoth living in Chennai. I am from the product development background. I would like to learn more about product development, to launch an idea and find investors to keep growing. Further to that, I am looking for a mentor who can guide and groom.

But still, I have more questions in my mind for which I can find the answer and keep learning in this journey.

  99. 1

    Hey everyone,
I'm Ron and I'm from Auckland, New Zealand. I recently found the Indie Hackers Podcast in the last couple of months and finally got around to joining what looks to be a pretty awesome community.

I'm an infrastructure/devops/automation engineer, working on a business idea of how to make it easier for app developers to get their applications onto fully automated, resilient, security-hardened self-healing infrastructure (cloud, kubernetes) quickly, and be battled tested, compliant and highly available with little to no fuss (big goal, I know).

But that's what I'm working on, so hit me up if you're interested, I'd be keen to talk ideas!

  100. 1

    Hi guys/gals,

My name is Onder and I'm living in Turkey. The country one... :)

I am a sound engineer who does many things beside sound engineering. I am currently doing my M.A. degree in Music Technologies at a different city but now came back to my hometown and now living with my family. So lost my passion to many things due to anxieties. I am a wonderer. The king of the ifs and elses. And I LOVE experiencing. Thats the second best way to learn for me.

So, I found here from a youtube video (thanks to him) about a guy who left his cubicle and moved out. Then I came here to find some hope :). I have some obsession with producing original stuff. Like re-creating old stuffs, more and more... Anyway... Here to meet with people.

Thank you If you came this far :) And thanks for anyone whoever there is!

I hope to build a business that I care about and create a better source of income for myself. I'm looking forward to being part of the community. Thank you!

    Hey Rosie,

Great that I found Indie Hacker! Love the idea of exchanging tips and tricks to get start-ups off the ground. We are currently hammering away at www.epiloge.com (just past 300 users, which isn't much, we know :)) - and will start now on a 'backlink' strategy, that is we'll write up things we used in building Epiloge that were particularly interesting to us and also want to make short youtube vids on vue.js/node.js/mongo/elasticsearch tips and tricks.

I'm open for new projects, side projects and new things! Thanks!

  121. 1

Hi Rosie! Im glad to have found this community! I hope to find answers to my questions. One of them being "how to know if an idea can be developed to be an actual project: when to stop thinking and actually take actions" .

    Thank you !

    1. 1

@Sonya_M00nKey is your idea for a product or a service? Are there any options out there that would help you prototype this idea and get some feedback?

  122. 1

What's up everyone? I'm in Brooklyn, NY. My company is launching our first SaaS products this year and I am here to learn as much as I possibly can. If anyone can donate some time to connect with me, share some general insight that would be amazing, or send me any content, that would be amazing!

    1. 2

@jhamar sounds great - best of luck with your SaaS company. What sort of product are you launching? You mention "content" too - do you mean a review, podcast, vlog, something like that (or something else)?

      1. 1

Hey! Thanks for the reply! We make "society-friendly" software. Which basically means we want to design software that provides real life value. We created a public opinion tool, a social chat app, and we are releasing software for mentoring organizations now! And when it comes to content, it can be anything. I'm totally open for all knowledge right now.

  123. 1

  128. 1

Hi from Portlandia. I've been here for 18 years and have been teaching classes in digital marketing to small businesses and nonprofits while using the tools to grow a couple of causes:

    . Ecstatic Dance
. Getting rid of Gas Powered leaf blowers (and other gas-powered lawn equipment)
. Farm My Yard - farmmyyard.org - a way to connect urban farmers with yards to farm
. Keeping trees standing - here and beyond - stopping deforestation is a great way to combat climate change
    . The other things

You can learn more about me at http://albertideation.com and I look forward to diving in and taking a swim in this awesome pool! I'm also on all of the social media usually at something connected to my actual name which is Albert Kaufman. Nutmeg Alfredo is a burning man name I've had since 2000, so I thought I'd share that cause it helps me bring the fun.

  129. 1

Hi fellow hackers, I am joining for inspiration to launch my own business. I believe there is potential in building sustainable houses in Portugal. I am a project manager, married to an architect and we feel we can take our past working experience to the next level. One way I see to start is by building our own house (practice what you preach) then build on the experience and share across a wider audience. Is this related with software? Not necessarily, however one direction we would like to take is also make smart, connected and safe housing.

  134. 1

Hi everyone! My name is Matteo.
    I’m a a 25-year-old guy from Rome, Italy.

    “Career” path:
I studied agriculture in high school.
I have a bachelor in industrial design.
Last year I enrolled in an acting school.

I get often lost in my projects.
I usually run too many projects.
For example, I’m designing my mother’s website, my own website, my mother’s logo and my own logo. I’m producing a videoclip for a friend’s rap song and re-organizing my apartment.

    I practice meditation daily.
    I practice visualization daily.
I work out weekly (bodyweight, hiit).

I read when I want to learn something. Or to relax.

Don’t know.. need to have fun a bit rather than run from one place to another. Have one passion rather than too many projects. Life is simple and time is not enough.

  140. 1

Hi, I'm Peter from Wrocław, Poland. I'm a professional programmer, I've started with coding web applications and redirected my carrier towards backend and infrastructure engineering. I'm tired selling my time and I look for ways to escape 9 to 5. I'm really into doing things 100% for some time with periods of rest, so full time employment does not fit into this.

Most recently I'm enjoying myself as a PM in one project and I read a lot about leadership. I want to write a book, create a podcast and lead courses on creating highly performant teams.

Other interests are creating passive income streams through automation. But on this I'm as well more of a wanna be :)

I hope I can learn a lot from you and contribute as much as I can.

    1. 1

Hey we should have a chat! I have built my website so far for my startup but have reached my limit in terms of time and technical ability. We have grown quickly and signed our first 2 thousand customers. But we want to take it to the next stage. Would you be interested in having a chat?

One of my goals is to create a digital content production boutique that caters to high-level clients like influencers & celebrities. I'm also working on a brand/blog targeting creative professionals and entrepreneurs interested in increasing productivity & income from their creative endeavors.

I'm looking forward to linking with some good folk here. Give me a shout and let's kick around a few ideas. --DF

I'm Rick from London in the UK. I'm currently developing an idea for a mobile app for jobseekers. Looking to learn from other entrepreneurs and also learn as much as I can from the tech heads out there! I'm keen to get as much feedback on my idea as possible...from my idea itself, to the landing page, to my survey. It all matters.

    Hey all,

I live in Australia and found out about this site whilst watching https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7FLZO2hidHs, part of me has always had a few ideas that I have started and gotten to a unfinished state, even though the idea is there. I have some experience in development and do self learning on the side. However, would love to get the ideas into a realised state, I tend to over build certain functionality before having a basic product ready which I can expand, then life other priorities tend to pop up, and my time shifts elsewhere. I hope to get some motivation to continue and get the ideas I have realised.

As a side project, I've been working on a VBA project tailored for freelance business owners that helps them with their projects, finances, planning, time management, etc. My next milestone is developing a sales strategy, as well as build a comprehensive documentation - the software itself is pretty much finished :). I'm mainly here to see how other people approach selling their own software. What works and what doesn't.

    Hey there 👋

I'm Ivo, live in Berlin, Germany and work as CPO for a digital bank. I'm working on my pet-project called CNVS (https://cnvs.online).

CNVS is an easy to use tool where you can create Lean Canvas, Business Model Canvas or any other canvas (you can create your own). This tool was built for makers and founders. For those who want to build something great and want to figure out the best way to accomplish that.

I didn't have enough time before for this product but now I'd like to get my pet-project to the next level and achieve €3k MRR till the end of 2020.

In 2020 I hope to get my Modern Embedded-C++ Software and Firmware Development Kit called Kabuki Toolkit working and get some test measurements of my Oregon-Cooler Aqua HVAQ Energy Station, and to find some people to keep me motivated. It's been a long lonely isolated journey to bring the Astartup to the world in order to make your startup an A Startup with the A* Startup and I am You Language (IMUL). It's hard to run a big startup by yourself so I could use some support, friendship, and guidance.

    Hi there IndieHackers,

I am Simon from Malaysia, recently stumbled across IH i can't remember from where exactly. (Kickstarter if not mistaker) I am actually very new to all of this, have no experience whatsoever in coding or making MVP. Could say I am just a blank piece of paper ready to absorb as much I can in this community.

Currently reading every article and interviews on IH to learn and gain more information and knowledge about this field. I am looking forward though in the coming 2 years to have my own project started and able to do some good for the community around me , and of course have a profitable online startup.

    but.... where do i start?

    Hi ! I 'm Hafid from France.
I'm working on an atypical (without timeline) video editor web app for Dummies :

I've been creating https://011.video app for over a year now and I'm trying to get traffic and boost interaction.

I hope to find valuable feedback from this community regarding this app, its growth and monetization.

Well it's not easy to make it more familiar as 011.video is everything but a copycat video editor (no timeline, no templates, no layers...). But I will think about it. Thanks anyway.

I'm Yanus, from Argentina. I'm a full-stack engineer with 10yr of experience working at early-stage VC-funded companies. This year I started my journey to building a profitable lifestyle business. Coding solo 👨‍💻

I recently shipped my first app 🙌

Metta lets you create, share and reproduce a yoga routine. Spanish only for the moment.

It took me a month to build and publish the MVP. I'm now driving traffic to the app and tracking user engagement.

I hope to find valuable feedback from this community regarding product, growth, and monetization. I would love to find a mentor with experience monetizing apps.

Hi guys, I am a Security Engineer, Developer, Trainer, looking for ideas on how to become an indie hacker.

    Hi IH!

I'm Charlie, a creative developer and solo founder currently working on 2 products: vsual.co & linkedb.io, both of which I built and designed.

VSUAL is a high end print on demand marketplace, and Linkedbio is a link in bio tool.

My goal for the next few months, and 2020 in general is to continue improving these products and drive traffic, user, sale and subscription growth!

  202. 1

In 2020, I'm building 8 products, while working full-time. Apart from building 8, I want to monetize some of these projects, goal 1k USD MRR.

    1. 1

Wow 8 products are a lot, how do you think to manage them while working full-time? Don't you think will be better if you focus one tool at time and give it around six months to see if there are interest about?

      1. 2

Yeah, it's a lot! But the apps I'm building are pretty simple and the idea here is to ship products and see what sticks. If there is a product ppl really like and get traction then I will consider focusing on that one. Probably, this isn't the best approach but I need to exercise my shipping muscle and also improve my coding skills. :)

Oh, and shipping 8 products is an OKR goal. Chances are I will build only 5-6.
