Welcome to Indie Hackers! 👋 (Week of Jan 12th)

Rosie here -- the Indie Hackers community manager. Welcome! 👋

This short guide is meant to help you get the most out of Indie Hackers.

First, introduce yourself!

Indie Hackers is a community for people building profitable Internet businesses. The key word here is "community" — to get the most out of IH, you'll need to speak with and learn from other IHers. Don't be shy!

For starters, take a second to share your goals in the comments below.

Just say a few words about who you are and why you're here. What do you hope to accomplish or learn in 2020?

I encourage you to respond to others as well.

Dive into learning.

We've interviewed hundreds of successful indie hackers. I recommend starting by reading a few of their stories. It's a great way to get an overview of what's possible and the huge variety of paths that different people take.

(@csallen also puts out podcast episodes if reading isn't your thing.)

Every founder begins with a different level of knowledge, but learning never ends. It's good to do a little bit of reading upfront, but don't get stuck in a pure learning phase for too long and let that hold you back!

Next, get started!

Once you've got a little knowledge under your belt, the best way to learn is to do. And there's no better time to do than right now.

Check out our "Start" page page for a list of practical steps and articles that can help you on your way.

Not only will it help you get started, but it should also introduce you to some of the best parts of the Indie Hackers community.

This is just the tip of the iceberg, but I hope it helps you get started!

If you're ever feeling lost or confused, post in the Meta group or tag me (@rosiesherry) in any comment or post.

Don't forget to share your goals below! 🤗

Hey everyone, Dave here. I'm a designer, marketer, founder. I'm constantly building my ideas with fingers crossed hoping they will be a success. I've had few successes but probably more failures (which is fine as long as you learn from them). You can check out all my side projects https://www.cooeedesign.com/products

My main goal for 2020 is to build the largest online community for idea lovers https://www.ideasdrop.com

Look forward to seeing you folks smash your goals this year.

    1. 2

Good luck Dave, I'm sure you'll get there mate :-)

    2. 2

Wow that's some serious productivity! What's your tech stack?

      1. 1

I go into each tech stack on my product page https://www.cooeedesign.com/products

    3. 2

That's a lot of products. Well done :)

    4. 1

Best wishes, Dave. Side note: Ideasdrop introduced me to the term "tire kicker." Good one to know.

      1. 1

I'm glad. You have probably met a lot of tire kickers in your time.

    5. 1

      Hey Dave!

      I'm new here as well.

I just checked out your product, looks pretty awesome. I'd love to offer my help if you need any coding or development.

I'm primarily a JS developer, but I've used PHP, Java and Python before. My area of expertise is React, and I love using cutting-edge web development tools and languages to create the best user experience possible.

You can contact me at https://jarodpeachey.netlify.com, or by email at [email protected]

      Regards,

      Jarod Peachey

He everyone👋🏻 , thrilled to join (finally). I'm a developer, founder, always building the next big thing. But even though I know all the startup mantras, somehow I'm lacking so far to generate sustainable business.

Problem is, I'm in love with coding and creating products (now working on https://dailystate.me), and I know I need to start as much time on selling and promoting.

    So that's my 2020 goal:
Get out of my comfort zone, learning a lot from you guys, and aiming for 10k MRR. Time to become an Indie Hacker! 😄

    1. 2

Hey @EpicDev , great project, I just checked it out...I really like the "free forever" challenge that's such a good idea. Even tho I'm not into journaling, that hack just hoked me in for a second. Need to try the journal. I'll let you know what I think about it. ATB !

      1. 1

        Thanks a lot!!
I wasn't really sure about the free forever challenge (actually about to post it in the money group for feedback) but I thought it is a win-win situation.
Lets see how it works out ;-)

    2. 1

Great design and a novel idea, it's a winner!

    3. 1

Love the dailystate idea. I've considered something similar for a long time that is more focused on how to elevate ones state - day to day, with proven methods.

You've also done a great job with the design. Big up!

      1. 1

Thanks, your feedback is very uplifting! :-D
And those proven methods sound interesting, I'd be interested to learn more

  3. 4

Greetings everyone, Habeeb here. I'm an aspiring digital marketer, currently into creating content that converts.

My main goal in 2020 is to improve my skills and knowledge so I can contribute more to the growth of humanity.

Looking forward to meet and learn from you guys.

    1. 1

All the best, Habeeb. I respect the end goal.

  4. 4

    Howdy all.

Recently saw a post by @HenriNext which changed my perspective about joining Indie Hackers. I had largely ignored the startup scene as saw some very bad practices in London which put me off, my perspective of startups felt too much like a closed circuit of Gary Vee dispensed advice and questionable ethics both for business and relationships.

Marketing, Sales, IT/ and general tech guy but cannot write a single line of code to save my life. Spent the past 5 years with my IT support business startup so have a bit of experience under my belt.

One of the founders of EveryMon ( https://every-mon.com ) - Which we're hoping will be the first product in our suite of tools for IT pros and business users. Launched into early access this month!

    Current goals:

    Grow the EveryMon userbase
Expand the feature-set to accommodate more scenarios.
Begin work on our second product.

Hope to start chatting with you all soon,
    Breffni

    1. 1

Go get em, Breffni. I like the site design–the color palette in particular. And is that Courier? Very appropriate.

    2. 1

I'm glad you changed your mind. Now we need to convince you to stay for the long term :)

  5. 4

    Hi IndieMakers 👋
I'm Francesco, a full-stack maker from Italy. In the past years I've already launched some projects like https://stori.social, https://feminipsum.space and at the end of 2019 https://cozyreader.xyz , a decentralized and private read it later service.

I have some goals for 2020:

Also, I'm open to help others. If you need some help please contact me and I'll try my best to help you! 💪

  6. 4

we are a Flutter developer now our Flutter open-source library is live now check out here https://github.com/ionicfirebaseapp/getflutter and share your feedback to us.

  7. 4

Hi folks. I'm here because I've been lurking for a bit, reading the content, and thought I should contribute back. I'm an experienced founder but working on a new startup that's in very early stages. The landscape is always changing so keeping a beginner's mindset helps immensely to always be open to new approaches to success.

    1. 2

Thanks for unlurking! As an experienced founder myself it has been such a learning curve over the past year in reunderstanding the landscape. Things can move relatively quickly and it is quite easy to feel get out of touch.

      1. 2

I am very impressed at the amount of bandwidth you seem to have, just perusing your page it seems like you really have your hands full, but are still killing it! I've got an 18 month old and have struggled to keep the work/health/parenting effort in balance ever since he was born. How do you do it?

        1. 1

I think partly I'm motivated to get things done in the time that I have (kids do this to you).

But also, I work remotely and when it suits me. And have no commute.

I'm also very protective of my time. And delegate tasks within the family. My husband is an equal partner too. I have teens, they have to help out (or else!).

I'm not great at planning. I don't do meetings/calls, only when I really have to. My work fits around my family, not family around work. I tend to work in 2-4 hour bursts, a chunk in the morning, then a chunk in the evening, then middle of day is with kids. I can't commit to work that doesn't accommodate this.

Wish I could do better with health and fitness, but at least I try do get things done, and really I do exercise 3-5 times a week. Often with younger kids tagging along. e.g. Running with a buggy/stroller use to be the only way I could get any exercise. Now I'm trying yoga, sometimes with kids running around me. But I love chocolate too much and when things get busy with the kids then food is the hardest part to keep 'healthy' for us. :(

Also, what seems 'killing it' is not always the case. I'm not always happy with all the things, the responsibility, etc. I do wish things were simpler. There is always so much to do. But I feel very privileged too.

Overall, I'm grateful. I do get to spend lots of time with my family even if it is just being a taxi mother! But I literally have no free time, but that is also (kinda!) by choice. I'm not sure if I'm a great example, tbh! It's a lot of micro managing, which can be hard to manage.

Hope the brain dump makes sense :)

We can chat further on our Indie Parents group :)

          1. 1

Thanks for sharing Rosie! I read through your blog to try and uncover your secrets as well. Thanks so much for sharing your experience. I will check out the parents group.

  8. 3

    Hi everyone, I'm Peter.

I've been on IndieHackers for about a year, and have made a couple of false starts with side projects in the past.

My goal for this year is to make my first dollar online from something I've created myself, from scratch. Along with that, I hope to get better at generating and validating my ideas.

    Cheers to the new year!

  9. 3

    👋
I'm a developer exploring an idea for letting everyone in an organization discuss ideas, opinions, questions, and answers on an equal basis.

Anonymity will reduce both reputation risk and personal bias in reactions/responses.
A consistent scoring scheme based on reactions/responses identifies popular/resonant items.
Authors can publicly claim their posts if/when they want, while remaining unassociated with their unpopular ones.

    • Float risky-feeling ideas to see if others think they might work
    • Post other things to see if the culture embraces or rejects them.

I have tested early versions on some co-workers. I know the negative feedback about the UX/UI is honest and true; I recently started working with a UX/UI contractor to help me with in/validating the idea and seeing how much is the UX/UI, and how much is the core idea.

I hope to get clarity on that in 2020—enough to either keep working toward PMF or be confident I can finally stop thinking about it!

  10. 3

hi everyone. I'm here because I'm working to build (using no code tools) a community and tools for emerging artists/musicians as a core part of my company, Boyish Records. My co-founder, ASTU, is an emerging artist and we're collaborating on tools to help her grow her business as an artist and create a community of like-minded artists as entrepreneurs. We want to launch a MVP in March 2020.

    1. 1

Best of luck, do check out the No-Code group for support.

      1. 1

        Thanks! Joined the No-Code group.

Hi everyone, I'm Vu, a developer, technical lead and engineering manager as my full-time job. I have many try-and-fail side projects since 2011. I have some lessons learned, mostly because I gave up quickly and not dedicated to it.

For 2020, by the age of 30, I set my goal to build and launch a very simple SaaS product. It's not important to monetize this application but to form my habit and be more active with the Indiehacker community. This product should categorize as No employees, Solo founders code, and bootstrap.

So my goal for 2020 is to build "The Simplest To-Do App to Get More Done in a Day." - https://www.indiehackers.com/product/doneday.

I will give an update on every Sunday. Looking forward to meeting and learn from you guys 😄

    1. 2

Best wishes, Vu. I admire the goal of habit-forming over monetization. Developing new behaviors is more challenging than it seems. Thanks for the reminder.

  14. 2

Greetings from Denver CO! I am a developer brainstorming ways to start a side hustle. I want to formulate an idea and start my business by the end of the year. In the meantime, I am working to improve my front end development skills. My focus has been primarily in backend and I will need to be full stack in order to pump out landing pages and prototype products. I started a blog to motivate myself and document the process at https://wes-galbraith.dev. The site is a work in progress (it is a Ghost instance running on a Digital Ocean droplet), but that did not stop me from publishing my first post yesterday!

For now, my recurring goals are to publish at least 1 blog post, and brainstorm and vet at least 1 business idea per week.

  15. 2

Hi, I'm Shane, a full stack dev. I'd like to launch the "MVP version 2" of my product Feed Flight, a web based solution for restaurants, by the end of the year. "MVP version 1" was sort of like a proof of concept. It's running 99% bug free at local pizzeria, and now I want to build it again with new features and a different tech stack to simplify my life and scale to more customers. I've been on IH a few years ago trying to do a basketball statistics site, but found it wasn't very interesting to me. I found I love the idea for this new product because I think I can really help small businesses.

    1. 2

I've been there with my white label web/app lol. So I hear you there come back around and realize what you enjoy is more of what you should do.

  16. 2

Hey everyone, I’m Malcolm. My goal is to become proficient in software development. I’m familiar with languages such as HTML, CSS, SQL, JavaScript, C, C#, Java, and Python.
I am currently learning how to build a blockchain application with JavaScript.
I look forward to learning and sharing accomplishments with you all.

  17. 2

Heeey everyone! I'm the founder of https://robhayes.co. I'm a designer and marketer - and I'm usually recognized as being the spider in the web between developers, customer service, 3D designers, etc. I love creating new projects and affecting people all around the world.

    Goal 2020:
Create a new project that will start generating revenue before the end of the year.

I hope you all will achieve whatever your goals for this year are. Let's go!

  18. 2

Hi everyone! I'm a solo founder looking to build a better, more inclusive budgeting app focusing on privacy and security.

Here to share my journey and learn from others.

  19. 2

Hi everyone, Ovidiu here. I found out about Indiehackers maybe a month ago and I felt drawn to the prospect of a community like this one.

I've been a software developer for over ten years, I've worked in a lot of industries from telecom, gaming, to social media. I used to be a backend developer but a couple years ago I decided to try frontend and haven't gone back since. Nowadays I'm an engineering manager at a software company and it's a really good gig, not much I can complain.

But I've always felt like I should be working on something with a more positive impact. I'm not yet ready to drop my comfy job but 2019 was an inflection point. For 2020 I have two goals: improve my core programming skills (you learn a lot in software companies, but you don't get to exercise fundamentals as often as you'd think), and network with folks who are working on something that makes the world a slightly better place. Hopefully, this is the place to achieve the latter :)

    1. 1

Welcome! We're quite in the same place. I'm hoping to start something new that will help people or make this world better. Glad to meet!

  20. 2

Hi everyone 👋, I'm passionate about developing iOS apps 📲. I think that even if I win the lottery 💰 one day I'll continue doing them just for the fun of it! 🤓

I just finished 👏 my Sweet Hue app which is already available on the App Store (https://apps.apple.com/app/sweet-hue/id1437555482). I'm now in the process of promoting it 🚀 a bit before jumping onto my next iOS project 😀

  21. 2

Hi! I'm Maurits, from the Netherlands. I do a lot of side projects, most of them are crap. Recently, I have been working on elfsh ( https://elfsh.mousetail.nl ) among others. Looking forwards participating!

  22. 2

Hey guys, happy to be here. I found this site on product hunt. I've always wanted to have a few side hustles for passive income and this place seems great! I seriously have no idea where to start outside of my ideas. I look forward to connecting with you all!

  23. 2

Hi everyone! I'm working on growing https://airmeet.com/, a video conferencing solution for online events. Think of it as a virtual venue which you can use to facilitate interactions like how you would IRL.

  24. 2

Hello guys :) I'm a 25 yo product owner from France, i found IH on ProductHunt and i was very seduced by the simple path described from explaining your goal to finding partners to start building your MVP etc.. I wish it will happen haha, I have many centers of interest such as 3d industry, gaming industry, advertising industry etc...
    Cya around :)))

  25. 2

Being a full-stack developer for more than 10 years, I really wanted to give back to the community. I am really excited to join the community. My goal is to build something useful to all the community members like me, as a first step am going to build a chrome extension where people can take screenshots and share it wherever they want. I am expecting to launch the MVP in march 2020.

  26. 2

Hello everyone. I've just started working on my side project EasyAuth (https://easyauth.xyz) and want to launch it in 2020. I've read a lot here on IH and listen to the podcast often. My goal for 2020 is launch my side project and start making a living out of it. My revenue goal for this year is $5k MRR.

    1. 1

Good luck! What are current numbers?

      1. 1

Zero. For now ;) I haven't launched yet.

        1. 2

Ahh gotcha. Well let us know when it goes live!

  27. 2

Hey everyone! I'm here looking for tips and advice on how to start my first real side business. My background is in logistics and transportation. I don't have any tech or marketing background so it's been a struggle for me to see ideas through, but I've been dabbling in some no-code tools to get things started! My 2020 goal is to get over the fear of failure and actually launch something 😁.

  28. 2

    Hey there! My name's Farza (@farzatv) and I'm building ZipHomeschool.com :)

  29. 2

I'm Cal, I work a full time job, have a 15 month baby, and two dogs. Despite my full schedule, I have been trying to build a small SaaS company in my limited free time. With my full schedule, that often means getting in 45 minutes over a lunch break, or an hour or two after my kid has gone to bed. I'm looking for a community of people to help with encouragement, as the limited working time can make progress feel VERY slow, and for sharing/ validating ideas.

  30. 2

Hello everyone! I'm here to learn how be creative like all of you guys. Now I'm just a full time employee as a developer (Java, Typescript, Angular) in Brazil. This year I like to start my first business, but I don't know with problem I can solve to the others. Maybe I need to learn how be able to have insights that can be transformer in an idea and if I have luck, a business.

    1. 1

Oi Mateus, check out my profile and post.

  31. 2

Hello Indie Hackers! I am a software developer, co-founder of Teazer mobile app. I discovered the IH community while looking for ways to gather feedback and create traction for Teazer.

Teazer has been available on the stores for some time now (for free) and general feedback so far has been towards positive. But being a location-based app proved to be very hard promote, since there is no incentive for early adopters. Feel free to check it out on:
    Landing Page: https://teazer.io
    App Store: https://apps.apple.com/app/apple-store/id1452504908
    Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=io.teazer.teazer

It would be really helpful if we could gather some feedback/tips and hear your thoughts on the idea and possible ways to promote it.

    Thanks!

I'm Priya and started the channel Getting Deeper 7 years ago in India. I now live in Berlin. I curate electronic music on GD and I am looking to turn it into an ajax powered, streaming website and also a record label. At the moment I am lacking the know-how and time for the next challenge with GD, as I work in a full time job and need to pay my bills. However I am already on my way to learning programming, and would love to get tips and advice from other people who are doing this and trying to pursue their creative projects while also learning and paying bills.

    1. 1

      Hey Priya, that sounds interesting!

Try using apps like Sololearn (free), Mimo (paid but cheap), Grasshopper (free) to learn coding through bite-sized lessons daily. I like Sololearn the most as the ranking feature is really motivating and you can challenge people too. You could use websites like udacity.com (free & paid- my fav as I learnt android development here), I guess that is more than enough to get started, I'm new here too and would love to get in touch, cheers. And, good luck!

  33. 2

Hi Rosie, I am glad to be part of this community now. I just want to let you know that I am blind, and I may encounter some technical issues in navigating this site. I will do my best in taking most benefit from this community, but if I feel that accessibility is a barrier for my advancement, I will let you know and hopefully we could work around making my experience more interesting!
The main purpose of being on here is that I could find a tech co-founder, who could join my tech company, and share my vision of making the world a more accessible place for blind people. if you have some suggestions on how I should commence my journey on looking for a tech co-founder on here, I would be more than happy to read them!
    With the best of wishes,
    Ali

This will be the year my online business surpasses my yearly salary and i'll be using indie-hackers to track my progress.

  35. 2

I'm Doug, I'm here to learn what I can from folks who have accomplished what I'm trying to accomplish, which is achieving financial freedom through Internet innovation. This year I'm hoping to launch my first mobile game app, which I'm building myself.

Hello everyone! I'm a founding member and only Product person on a 7-person startup building a recruitment and career develpoment platform for people in Machine Learning and AI.

I am here to share my experiences and challenges of going from zero to one and one to one hundred and learn from your experiences building products from the ground up. Also learn about how to manage relationships, people and situations in the earliest stages of a startup.

  37. 2

Hello! We're building VirtualAirwaves, an application that lets people "just talk" on a system that resembles push-to-talk two-way radio.

We want it to feel like radio, so people closer to you have "stronger signals". Our goal is to be built into cars for hands-free communication to other drivers on the road, or be useful to people at events, festivals, or just walking around town to find out what's going on, or just listen to nearby people talking -- the way people used to do it back in the 70s on "CB Radio"

Private channels can be easily provisioned and shared--without any need to login or connect to a social network, if you want to keep your conversations between friends.

Right now we have a WebRTC app that runs in any modern browser (Chromium Edge, Chrome, Firefox, Safari) that you can try here: https://cb.virtualairwaves.com/channel/1

And there's an iOS application: https://appsto.re/us/jrj3hb.i

Our servers are in Python, Erlang, and CUDA/C++ and our clients are written in Elm and Swift (for iOS)

We'd love to talk to other developers using Erlang or CUDA for signal processing, and anyone else in the WebRTC space.

    See our website at https://virtualairwaves.com/

At the end of 2018, I left Grammarly were worked for the last 8 years as a software engineer (built from the ground up a browser extension and editor there) and moved from San Francisco to Tbilisi, Georgia, to create products that can sustain my family and me. Right now I'm working on a cloud filter for Telegram messenger https://filter.sitg.app
I would love to get feedback for the project and maybe some users (who could also build their projects on top of it).

In 2020 I'd love to start earning on products that I built. I'll be learning how to grow products, write articles, and share knowledge I gained along the way.

    1. 1

Hi Igor! Any chance for me to get in touch with you? Would love to talk about some Software Engineering things. - Christoph

  48. 1

    Hello everyone!
I'm Max and recently joined Indie Hackers. I am a software developer at my full time job. During the last year I found myself asking how I can do more useful stuff with the skills I have. But somehow I was always reluctant to start something.

This will end this year as my goal for this year is to build something profitable.

I have some ideas floating around. Nothing too specific just yet.

Looking forward to get more involved with this community and are nervously excited what this year will bring!

Hello everyone, I am a developer, founder from Halifax Canada. My goal for 2020 spring is to launch the MVP version on my product which will simplify the short distance moving. As of now, I have a few movers who will give my product a dry run. I have no previous experience of building my own startup and would be looking for tonnes of help and suggestions from the group.
The web app version development has yet not started as I have started with mobile versions first. I am the one-man show right now. The company is called "GenexMove" which translates into Generation Next Move.

    1. 1

Hi Abhishek, I look forward to following your project and learning more.

Hey hackers, I am a full-stack engineer based out of India with curiosity in building profitable microstartup. Hey everyone, Wesley here!

    :)

I'm an android programmer who enjoys tinkering with other cool languages. I'm a military husband (who's enlisted, but was medically discharged during training). I've made some mistakes with previous businesses (they failed, I learned a lot I'm sure you know the drill). I'm more in line with Dave below me XD. I'm founding a software company that is building a recipe app in addition to possibly in the future a white label web/mobile app.

This year I'm looking to finish and publish the recipe app that I'm working on for android and ios called Keep. Later, I'm looking to run a profitable business on the side to give me the financial freedom so that I can quit my 9-5 and continue building apps and other revenue streams.

You can find me on the main socials using @WesleyFranks I'm the bearded guy.

    1. 2

Hi Wesley, where can I learn more about your recipe app? What specifically will your app do? Help users create/share/find recipes?

      1. 1

no website yet. Yes to your question it will allow you to create/share/find recipes

    2. 1

well nvm, dave is no longer below me. Hi Shane :)

  52. 1

I just wish to say that this is beautiful.

Having the freedom to go where ever I want, while earning great income online without the need to remain in a fix location thrills me. Becoming a digital nomad interests me even more, so today I started searching online to meet others who prefer to live their lives on their terms, and I am here, a total novice, but with a dream, so someday know enough to earn the freedom to roam the planet as I please while making money from online businesses.

Will post my visions and the journey.

Hi everyone! I built a small business to $9k MRR cleaning homes here in Columbus, Ohio. It's a tough, labor intensive business. I'm a self-taught developer, so I want to build a new business that leverages those tech skills.

I have a couple ideas that I'm actively investigating. My current favorite is an email marketing service for real estate agents, or some other technology service in that industry if another need becomes apparent as I talk to folks. There are already lots of tech products in the space, but I think there is room for innovation. If nothing else, I think there may be an opportunity for a tech consultation business in my region. My runner-up idea is to create a service or community for aspiring self-taught coders.

Over the next few months, I will vet and choose an idea to pursue in earnest.

  58. 1

Hey everyone, I'm here to learn from all of you and hopefully polish up on my own dream and share it here with all of you someday

  59. 1

Hello. I'm just writing here to keep myself accountable. I make mostly useless things while climate change and other large problems grow larger. I hope to make less useless things that people will pay for, which will allow me to contribute to important causes with time or money.

I recently discovered this site and wanted to share and learn. I started company #1 about 20 years ago, it was moderately successful, but things have changed quite a bit. Working on getting company #2 off the ground and want to do it right. We're building event day logistics software that tracks participants and volunteers at bike rides and runs. Lots of positive feedback so far, and even some paying customers. https://traq-central.com

Hi everyone! Recently left as a product manager at big tech company where I launched products for hundreds of millions of users, and decided it's time to pursue my own mission: "Living in a world where we can continuously learn from others around us, and where everyone is empowered to share what they know with others". It's just the start, focusing on San Francisco for now at https://classalog.org.

Please connect and give feedback! The 2020 goal is to achieve exponential organic growth and launch in several cities before expanding around the world, and learn from the success of so many of you out here :)

Hello all, you know when you have an idea and then take the leap and star building it and then your wife gets pregnant and is in labour on launch day, a familiar story I'm sure, well that's where I was 5 or so months ago and have had no time to implement what promo ideas I had.
I can't code, well nothing difficult anyway, but I got ideas and think I'm sitting on a pretty good idea/app that could make it.
I'be found indie hackers and an putting all my eggs in your basket!

  77. 1

Hey! I am a college student that has a lot of free time on my hands. I am really interested in software development and I’m seeing if I can make side projects that can add value to the world and potentially create startups from.

  78. 1

Hi all, Kay here. Entrepreneur for over 15 years doing more freelance work the past 3yrs. To keep my entrepreneurial fed I'd like to jump into the waters again with a side project during evening hours and weekends... I tried developing products earlier but always got stuck at 80%. This year I made the commitment to make at least one SAAS product.

I'm a Full Stack developer currently focussed on Magento2 and React development. Currently completely full from a work perspective, so the only new client I'm accepting is myself, currently to comfortable with my projects so I really need something excited on the side again to feed my fire and get going again. I live my day to day Magento work but for sure need something on the side.

  79. 1

    Hey all!!

I'm Jarod, and I'm a web developer with a passion for creating the best user experience possible, using the latest technology and tools.

I've had plenty of cool ideas across the board over the last year, but haven't actually pinned any one of them for further pursuit. So my goal for 2020, on a broad scope, is to take one of those goals and release an MVP.

More specifically: I would like to develop a web application that allows people to create and host a modern, cutting-edge blog with little, eventually no, coding experience. Think Wordpress, but not slow, old and overused.

    The Issue
I'm passionate about the JAMstack and have built several websites using this method. What I've come across, however, is that the JAMstack is currently not well-known among non-developers. People are still stuck choosing between Wordpress, Wix, Squarespace, etc; and the don't have better, faster options that are built for speed, ease-of-use, and customization.

    What I'd Like To Build
I'd like to build an app that mimics Wordpress to an extent but combines multiple services into one click of a button. Ultimately, a user would be able to click a button, which would then generate a static website built with Gatsby. The app would then hook up to the user's Netlify account, and give them hosting options. It would also come built-in with a CMS that allows them to update content on the fly, similar to the Wordpress customize sidebar. The user would be able to create custom "blocks" that can be inserted anywhere on the page.

Ideally, this is a product that will allow people to create their own website theme, with endless customization options. I'll always be improving the product to allow for more and more options.

Anyway, you've heard enough of me blabber on about my dreams. That's my goal for 2020: release an MVP of this application to the world!

p.s I'm looking for a partner in this project. I would like someone who has a mid to high-level coding ability, as well as some sense for business. Overall, just a partner that I can brainstorm, develop and release a product with. You can shoot me an email at [email protected]

  80. 1

I'm Daniel. I'm here knowing that wanting it badly isn't enough. My goal is to document my journey as best as I can in 2020 and work openly. I currently have a pricing tool that I plan on pursuing for the foreseeable future as a business. It was one of 3 major concepts I had envisioned loosely in 2019. It had the 2nd most traction of the three ideas and stands the best chance of me being able to execute on it.

  81. 1

Hello Fellow Hackers, Ryan here. My goal this year is to get a new IH's project off the ground each month. I enjoy starting my own things but have several in-flight and want to help others soar. If you need a hand, reach out to me with details. I will at the least give you feedback and direction, or who knows - for the right idea, help you get things moving forward!

  82. 1

    Hi everyone,
I've been lurking or quite a while, so my first 2020 goal is easy: be an active member and really part of that awesome community.

I've mainly been developing for the last 10 years or so, and always had side project, OSS or following startup ideas.
Beside me as a Freelancer, I never sold anything on the Internet, so that's goal number 2: Finally get some $ or € by providing a service meant to be scalable on the Internet.

    How to achieve that ?
I am currently working on https://www.retrolution.co/ whose purpose is to help people dealing with Agiles Retrospectives. The vision is that the retrospective is the dedicated time for team to do some self-reflection and define actions so they can ship better products in best conditions.
The mission is to popularize retrospectives, educate facilitators, and provide tools so they can have a bigger impact.

I am confident this time I can make it, one of the reason is being here ;-)

  83. 1

Hello IHers,I’m here to learn a lot of things to help me start a side project. My goal is to turn my ideas into something profitable

Heeeeey everybody :) I'm Jonas, a digital product designer from Berlin, Germany who loves to explore all kinda ways to do more meaningful work and make products that are actually valuable to customers.

The main point why I'm here is to get to know other people :) You can talk to me about all kinda things, Product Design (obviously), How you can be more efficient at work, Skateboarding, Football/Soccer, Personal Development, Coffee, Dogs, whatever.

I don't believe in a lot in goals so I didn't set any. The only thing I'm trying to do is just to always do my best work.

I'm really excited to join this community. I hope you all are having a great day! :)

  92. 1

Hi folks, new to IH, though it'd been a while I planned to register!

I created "les Voyages d'Emma" (Emma's Trips) a year ago with the aim to help French people travel and discover the world. I'm looking for error fares and cheap flights I send to my subscribers, so that they can book trips for close to nothing.

I'm starting to get interesting results but I feel like I'm plateauing a bit. I'd love to find new ways of growing my userbase and revenue. I'm also starting to doubt about the way I do things, especially when I think about the carbon footprint of plane travel. So, would love to speak with people facing the same challenges and give back!

  93. 1

    Hey all,

I'm Abdullah, currently a student, and looking for ways to setup an online side hustle.

    Hey folks!

Lazar here, full-stack and mobile engineer. I don't have any projects behind me, but I have aspirations of creating online courses, and potentially start a podcast. The problem that I'm facing is the lack of available payment options, because I'm from Macedonia and there's no PayPal or Stripe available. That's why I'm joining this community, with the hope that I'll find a great solution!

    Keep hacking everyone!

    Hello Everyone!

I’m here to absorb knowledge and meet with like minded individuals. I’m looking forward to being part of this community and helping others to achieve their goals.

I’m a Technical Lead for a large global production company which takes a lot of my time but in any free time I get I’m usually building something that interests me. I have big ambitions for my future and always have my head in business and technical books, most recently Hooked by Nir Eyal and The Managers Path by Camille Fournier.

Currently working on a timetable product, firstly aimed at events but with a goal of entering the educational space eventually. My goal for 2020 is to launch this product and have at least 10 clients signed on before the end of the year.

Looking forward to sharing with all of you!

Hey, I'm Himanshu, a product designer from India.

I decided to learn to build (as opposed to designing, which I've been doing for so long) and built my first product this week (https://undesk.in). It's a remote platform focused on India and I started with a job board. It's still a long way to go, but it's fun learning and building something.

Remote work has changed my professional life in a really good and meaningful way, My goal is to create something that can help others do the same while building financial independence for myself.

It's really nice to meet, looking forward to knowing more folks from this community :)

  105. 1

    Hey all! 👋🏻

Saw an article on here yesterday - on how in the offline world - if you look around you - and see the products - a mouse, a desk, notebook, a pen etc - these are all products that have too many competitors, but still there are makers who make these things everyday, and buyers - buying them everyday. But in software we (or I) have this idea that if someone is already built something, there can't be another one.. That is (still) my default way of thinking, and in 2019 (and before) I operated from this framework - I tried building in 2019, but didn't really take off - mainly because I was trying to be too clever, and build something which didn't exist before.

    Anyway..

In 2020, I am actively looking for a market with paying customers - and then will look to build something there as a side project, and take it to $3000/month as soon as possible. No excuses.

    Good to see everyone here!

  106. 1

    Hi Everyone,

I have an assortment of projects (music [electronic, guitar based], art, chrome extensions) that I'd like to expand on. My website is https://jacques-applebaum.com

I'm currently a PhD student in CS in the US studying ML/ AI. I'd like to get in the scene regarding building revenue streams (also paid short term projects) to avoid being broke and eventually not have to have a normal job. I have many technical skills (C, Hardware, Python, Robotics, ML & AI, Javascript [chrome extensions], Web Design [Django] ) etc.

Mostly want help and learn from others about growth and learn how to market products and skills more effectively.

    Cheers!

    Hey everyone!

I am a product designer & founder of a nifty little design agency called Very Bad Wizards in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The purpose of is to help companies/teams get ideas of out their heads and into the real world super fast, essentially bridging the gap between they're offering & what consumers want.

Because most startup projects are bound to fail (46% according to CBInsights), we thought it would be a pretty good problem to solve!

And we've been successful so far, closing 6 product design projects in 8 months of the business opening!

I look forward to learning from the rest of the indie hacker community and give back the knowledge wherever I can!

  118. 1

Hi, I'm joining because I want to hear about other projects, seek feedback, and have motivation+accountability to finish my project. Thanks!

Some of the sharable(lol) things I've made- AutoWats - A self-sustainable and wireless Arduino powered plant watering system, an FPV hovercraft, a 3D printed Bluetooth controlled robotic arm, an autonomous (line follower, an obstacle avoidance, Bluetooth control; modes changeable via smartphone control), and an app called EcoStudy (not published) to play quizzes and plant trees.

Looking to connect with more like-minded Indie Hackers ASAP!!

Hello! I'm a developer in New Orleans. A few months ago I build an app for personal use and decided to release it. I am here to learn how to promote the app and get ideas for the next features to build!

    1. 1

      Wow, what's the app?

      1. 1

I love live music so I built an app for people to easily discover live music in New Orleans so they can enjoy it also. There is no app that I really like for this so this was my attempt to build something cool. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/groovie/id1489111362?ls=1

    Hi I'm Matej,

fullstack PHP and devops developer, working will all-web related. Last year I managed to surpass salary with one-time side projects. Now I would like to switch to products (and avoid dev. income trap), potentially full time if financially possible.

Hi all. A developer turned manager here. I have built a lot of products and can make mobile or web products. Never something that I could call my own, though. I am currently in the search of an idea that I like enough to start working on it. Joined IH for motivation and read about others' experiences.

Hi, my name is Adam. I’ve come across your posts many times on Hacker News, and now I’m joining the community. I live in the Capital Region of NY state.

I am building services in Flutter/Dart for my businesses while helping to kickstart more small business communities.

I currently own two brick+mortar community building businesses (realty + beer garden) and I’m re-engaging my technology roots/foundation. I’m finally getting serious and actively making time each day to work on my new product.

    hi I’m Chris

Goals for 2020 are being able to launch 2-3 SaaS entrepreneurship ideas atleast until a public beta stage by working 20 hours per week outside of my day job.

Hi everyone, My name is Austin McBee. I'm currently working in sales, looking to expand what I know to grow and gain financial freedom through learning and connecting with like minded people like myself. I'm willing to help anyone in any way possible. Best of luck to everyone reaching their own goals!

    Hello, I'm Trent.
I'm here to stay focused and learn so that I can finally bring my idea to reality.

Hello everyone. I'm a full-stack engineer based out of Boston, primarily working with Typescript, React, and Java Spring Boot apps. I've only recently stumbled upon the Indie Hackers community and I'm awed by how many incredible projects solo founders and really tiny teams have bootstrapped. You have all already been a big inspiration.

I'm a proponent of simplifying one's life and organizing it to pursue that which you love most. In my case, that's rock climbing, time with my family and friends, and the freedom to pursue whatever stokes my curiosity at any given time. To that end, my main goal for 2020 is to start exploring projects to better fund my decidedly not lucrative hobbies and get me closer to financial independence. I'm just now getting started on a project to help prepare frontend developers for coding interviews, and plan to document my progress on here.

I'm excited to get to know more of you and hear about your ideas, projects, and milestones.

    Hello everyone! I'm Kevin.
I work as a fullstack developer, but I have a lot of other interests in life. Woodworking, cooking, music, calisthenics, microscopy, and electronics. One day, I would love to explore and combine the depths of these skills. But first, I must achieve financial independence by bringing something valuable to the world.
I'm currently working on an Android project, and I should be ready to take the plunge into the market soon.

I strive to endlessly improve myself--to see how strong I can become!

I'm glad I stumbled into this place, it seems like a nice gathering of other independent and driven individuals. I'd love to learn from other folks' experiences about taking this narrow path in life--a path not many people tread.

    Hello everyone!
I'm the founder of Soixante circuits a multidisciplinary development studio at the intersection
    of art, design and technology.
We have been working on on-demand projects for more than 11 years and I'm now starting to get interested in the product development process and product/market fit theories.
We developed multiple tools and software that could be transformed into products but I'm trying to find a good problem to solve instead of producing a tool just because we have the power to.
I hope to learn a lot and meet interesting visionary people.

  151. 1

Hey there, I'm a beginner here. I've got an app with a trickle of daily organic signups and I'm trying to rapidly prove that this can be profitable or just decide to move on to more worthwhile options.

I'm looking forward to meeting and speaking with someone who has been in my shoes - that is, the very beginnings of a consumer app that doesn't have any sort of media attention.

Reach out if that's you, or if you have anything suggestion / question! Looking forward to connecting.

Hi, I'm a developer based in Amsterdam. I've been working my project digester.app for a while now and I have an MVP ready. Please head over to digester.app to try it out and give me feedback :)

The goal of digester is to allow people to create and manage subscriptions. Right now I support Github Releases as a "Source" and E-Mail as a "Sink" (meaning you'll get e-mails when a project has a new release). In the future, I want to extend both sides such that eg. a company could subscribe to x blogs and have them sent to their slack channel etc.

I'm here to learn how others bootstrap their project and get feedback while I navigate my own :)
