What are your onboarding tips/principles?

What goals do you aim to accomplish with onboarding and how do you do it?

I want my users to know the full breadth and depth of my apps while also decreasing the time to value as much as possible, as well as keeping the whole thing simple. In practice I find it hard to improve one metric without decreasing another.

Tutorials and pop ups can be helpful but they can also be distracting and in the way. Users may just want to use the app, not learn how to use it, so they ignore the whole process.

FAQ sections can be comprehensive but they're essentially walls of text that few users read.

I tried milestones too, little checkboxes that automatically get checked as they complete the steps they need, and I think this one is alright.

Overall, my process still sucks and I'm looking for something better. What are your thoughts on onboarding? Feel free to share examples too.

As an outsider, that's hard to answer because I don't know your customers or your app. Personally, I'm a big fan of short tutorial videos that help me achieve a specific goal.

Basic question: how do you measure the success of your onboarding and what do your customers say about it?

I never thought about measuring the success of my onboarding but it makes a lot of sense, I just always felt it was lacking. My customers haven't mentioned anything about the onboarding but they've asked questions I felt should have been covered if I had good onboarding.

Thank you for the tips, I'll be sure to add some metrics I can look at and add short tutorial videos to my onboarding process.

Hi @ktruong008, I am no expert on onboarding funnels but I can share some case studies to help you:

    1. Gamified your onboarding process to increase growth -> This founder improved his conversion rate to over 50% by turning his onboarding process into a game. I think you can relate to this as you are doing something similar too.

    2. Discovering your users' 'WOW' moment -> this founder shared how to discover that one task that converts your users and focus your funnel to bring future users to that task.

    3. The best of them all: **Setting up an irresistible free trial
      **
-> Learn how Shopify designed a "sticky" free trial that got their free users hooked and not "not to opt-in to a paid plan".

I've got more summarised growth strategies for you to replicate for your business over at GrowthHunt.co if you're interested.

    Cheers & all the best!
