What does your install / uninstall ratio look like?

Hi folks,

I was curious what your install & uninstall ratio looks like for your Chrome Extensions. Feel free to share you install and uninstall graphs!

In my case, for ScreenBud, it seems that 30-40% of users that install the extension uninstall it right away:

In my case, I suspect large % of the uninstalls is caused by requiring signup for using the extension, right after users use the extension:

    This extension Week over week, retention about 8%, but on average 15% come back later. This is a very consistent pattern and it does not vary much over years/weeks/seasons. I have onboarding demo to show how to use the extension (and have received feedback saying it is a good onboarding experience), no login etc. but many users use it as "one-off" utility. I pushed an update recently, and from there I see I have 174K "active" users, meaning number of current installs across different browsers. I only recently made it cross-browser so I will see if the experience is different in these other marketplaces.

        Yes, they come organically from Google search, mainly.

    I see around 15-20% daily uninstall rate on my addons. That said, there are generally 2 types of users:

    • People who installed my addon for its purpose and once done, remove it
    • People who installed my addon for its purpose, used it, and forgot its installed

    So at the moment, I have something like 30k installs across the addons, but daily usage of them hovers at about 1-5%.

    Curious what are you using to keep track of installs and uninstalls?

      The graphs I shared come from Developer Dashboard > [Your Extension] > Stats.

      There are other tracking methods with some advantages (and disadvantages):

      1. Integrate Google Analytics (or other) inside your extension and listen to runtime.onInstalled and other events and record them.
      2. Link Google Universal Analytics to your extension listing. Developer Dashboard > [Your Extension] > Store Listing > Google Analytics ID. It will allow you to track visits and installs in real time.

    Depending on the product:

    • For one of the chrome extension where we need signup, it is having around 30% uninstall rate. Saily around 20+ installs.
    • For another product that we just launched the uninstall rate is around 50%. I think we need to work better here on a better onboarding experience. There is no signup here, but we work with WhatsApp, which peole might consider too personal and dont want to keep items installed.

      I think experimenting with 'guest' access (without the need to register) might be worth it for both of us!

        Ya, that is a good point.

        We do provide a free version until a certain number of try a month. The problem I can think of with the guest version is that the users are going to use it, but they are not going to upgrade even if there is an option. In my case the free signup version provides me the email and I do try to nurture them on the email. Some success there. Still working on it.

        I do hope to do A/B testing on the pricing soon, so hopefully that will improve the signup.
