What is best paid-newsletter stack for those with ability to do a bit of dev?

If we are developers and want to setup a newsletter (paid but free options) then what is best stack? So we don’t want to spend ages building something from scratch, but happy to pull a few things together to give us something more comprehensive than substack.

Edit: can i add to the question... what if we want to build a community garden around the newsletter?

You can go with an existing email marketing service like mailchimp or madmimi and put the registration form(s) behind pay walls. You can usually specify for each form to be added to a list on the emails marketing provider side, so you can differentiate the different price levels.

Hey, I've been using Ghost, and it's impressive.

I believe they will release version 4 in the next months, and the members API will be out of beta.

thanks @TrippyWolf and @rosiesherry, I'm going to look at the Firebase stack idea and Ghost.

If you are UK based then you have to be willing or able to understand what to charge people depending where they are based. It gets super complex.

So, be willing to do that, or using a a third party service to support it. Paddle, Gumroad, etc.

I'm actually moving away from Substack and am building a community digital garden instead. Part place to publish content, part place to engage with people.

Thanks rosie. As usual as a developer/architect i am over thinking this and planning the version i need in 6-12 months when i have 10,000 subscribers 😎

your input is hugely valuable and making me realise i need to slow down and get something up and running first and focus my early effort on writing and finding followers, rather than doing any coding to build my own hot platform.

So,... whilst i personally find the entry pages to substack newsletters weird, should i care and just get on with substack?

But I too love your idea of a community digital garden idea which i read about yesterday in your post - which all made so much sense. So is there a readymade platform that would give me this - gumroad? Your recent post mentioned the guy who used gumroad and circle... or is this also a phase 2 and i should just stick to a simple newsletter for a few months?

Personally, these days I would go with Ghost. Especially as a dev you could probably customise some things as need be.

And as you say, consistent writing that people will (pay to) read is the hardest part.
