What is the difference between marketing and branding?

I am coming into this as a tech person who is recently trying to launch their product and would love to learn the difference.

I am learning all about how to market my products with ads but I am curious as to how the two are different?

Branding is about creating and maintaining a certain image, while marketing is about promoting and selling products or services. Both are crucial for a company's success, yet they represent different facets of the overall strategy.

Hi there Adel, I've got a fair bit of experience in this area if you'd like to chat it through! But fundamentally, branding and marketing are very linked, so it makes sense that they get muddled up. The easiest way I like to think about it is brand is your fundamental, core assets (like logo, name, tone of voice, what you stand for as a business, company culture etc) which don't change often - although they may evolve over time. Marketing however, is much more flexible and designed to do a specific job, usually attract customers in some shape or form. So, advertising is absolutely Marketing, but it should be based within the constraints your brand has already set.
Let me know if you'd like to discuss this more at all, more than happy to have a quick conversation if it would be helpful :)

I have done an online presentation about this exact question over on System 540. It's hosted within the community area:
