What is your opinion on one-time payments for Webapps?

Hey guys! With the current flood of webapps that charge on a monthly basis, I am curious what you think about actually charging only once for the use of your webapp? Do you know any good examples?

I know some sites like Nomadlist which provide the option for a one time purchase in addition to a monthly plan. This seems interesting too, if you ask me.

Let me know what you think!

If you will actively grow your feature-set a subscription is more justified and fair for the continued effort you put into it.

I've seen various "lifetime" offers in my life online and they all ended up being deprecated and the users forced to upgrade to a subscription plan.

I personally wouldn't buy a lifetime offer because it tells me it's exactly the opposite of a lifetime service.

Interesting thought! Totally agree with the actively growing feature argument. However, what do you think about a very simple app that is just not „worth“ paying for on a monthly basis or better, just does not make sense. People used to buy standalone Mac apps etc. Sketch still kinda does it too. I have some webapp ideas lingering that solve a very small but helpful use case for a niche but I would not consider them as a monthly service in that sense. Might also just have to expand with more valuable features to justify it? 🧐

Is it a tool that could be used without signing up and offered for free?

There are many free online tools, online converters, etc that live from organic search traffic and are supported by ads. I had such a site and it was generating small amount of income without any effort (disclaimer: already 10 years ago).

Also free tools are bound to attract a lot more attention. Just make sure you offer a way for users to signup to a newsletter or something, so you can keep in touch.

Yeah that makes def. sense! Thank you for your help!
