What it looks like when you do 0 marketing for 5 months

I'm now publishing some stats publicly on the new sitetoimage.com/open page! Things look pretty sad when you don't do marketing for like 5 months 😋

I took a break from my product for a while to do some freelancing, but now I'm finally circling back to the Indie Hackers world.

Currently my high-level goals are:

  1. See if I can establish any sort of consistent marketing plan for Site to Image.
  2. Start working on a new product that builds on top of Site to Image that I think will be more valuable.

Consistency is key, and hopefully my stats can be a good reminder of that to everyone.

Anybody else publishing metrics that we can draw interesting lessons from?

  1. 2

That's a sad set of graphs!

What were you doing before? Do you plan to restart that and see how you go? Or try some new ideas?

    1. 1

Surprisingly, I'm not sure these stats make me feel that sad. I ignored the product for 5 months, and it languished. Certainly if it thrived during that time I'd be overjoyed, but it didn't, and that's simply reality. Nothing to get myself upset about.

The higher traffic/revenue times you see are from three sources:

      1. Some posts/articles I wrote about the launch, the tech stack it was built with, etc.
      2. Ongoing discussions I had with people about the product (which led to my first couple of sales)
      3. AdWords (which led to my 3rd sale)

Finding ways to start more conversations is where I really want to focus, because it makes it easier to see what problems people are solving and how I can help them do that faster/better/etc., whether its with this product or another one.

I've built a Reddit bot that's watching for conversations I could jump in on and help out, but that hasn't been super fruitful yet. More articles/posts may be the way to start those conversations, but I'm still fuzzy on how exactly I would approach that.

AdWords "worked" but it felt like burning money. If I go back to that I think I'll need a better strategy.

If you've got any additional things to try, or if you see any blindspots I'm currently unaware of, I'd love to hear about them :)
