What metrics do you monitor for your SaaS?

While building your product there are a number of areas where measuring would be useful such as:

  • Infrastructure
  • Customer Base
  • Growth

What sort of metrics do you keep an eye on in these areas, as well as anything else you like to keep track of (to maintain progress, sustainability, uptime, growth..etc)?

  1. 3

For Zlappo, I'm slowly ramping up and scaling, so these are the vital numbers I'm tracking:

    • Traffic growth (obviously -- you can always optimize your funnel top more)
    • Traffic-to-trial rate (it's good for now, just need more traffic)
    • Trial-to-upgrade rate (also good, just need more traffic too lol)
    • MRR/MRR growth (as long as the growth curve stays constant)
    • Churn rate (trying to keep it below 5%)

For the product side, I'd like to know (but have yet to systematize):

    • Anytime an error is logged in my logs (haven't set up a system for that yet)
    • Anytime resources are spiking on my VPS droplet (memory, bandwidth, etc.)
    • Any other suspicious or unusual activity, DDos etc.

I feel like, across different stages, the metrics that matter to Zlappo do change over time.

I was less focused on MRR, but more focused on usage and conversion to trials earlier on, and then more focused on churn and MRR growth later on.

    only two, at the moment:

    1. customer interviews
    2. revenue

    they almost never change.

This is what I’m tracking currently for https://nullbox.co

    Customer base/Growth:
    Number of paid plan subscribers
Number of new trial plan users
Percentage of trial users converted to paid users

These are application specific metrics that I use to measure engagement:
Percentage of users who have created more than one forwarding email address
Percentage of users who have forwarded emails
    Number of emails forwarded

For infrastructure it’s just basic resource utilization monitoring through my provider as well as a third party security vulnerability scanning Service
