What platforms do you list your product on?

Hi Hackers,

There are a whole lot of product listing websites out there. The most popular is Product Hunt and Betalist, as far as I know. I read mixed stories about both. Besides those two, there are many startup listing sites and even services to list your startup on those sites.

My questions:

  • What platforms do you list your product(s) on?
  • Is it worth to use those listing services?

I got a lot of traction sharing about my product on Twitter, here in Indie Hackers and a number of communities where my target users hang out. I also had success with a Product Hunt launch.

I am not a fan of a "spray and pray" method as it's harder to attribute sales, and divided attention doesn't usually lead to the best results.

I do not use listing services as I feel like you do not control the narrative of your product, and people who have questions don't feel like they have a direct channel to chat with you.

"I feel like you do not control the narrative of your product". This is super important indeed and if some service will spray your product, it is in their hands. I wouldn't want that!

Hey Adriaan, love this idea! I'm not sure what stage you're at in terms of considering other marketing channels, but if it would be useful to understand what other channels might work for your product you can grab a free personalised report from https://www.lumive.io/

Thanks @eudora, will give it a try!

Some time ago I made a list of 30 directores to submit a SaaS and made a blog post out of it. Perhaps you find it useful: https://www.supermonitoring.com/blog/30-application-directories-to-submit-your-saas/

There is plenty of places where you can post your product!

    • startup directories
    • Communities like HN, PH, makerlog...
    • online chat
    • FB groups
      -...

I created a product with more than 400 places where you post your startup!

This is cool, good product idea.

    Hey Adriaan,

Did you gather any other to your list besides the two you mention and the few mentioned below?

    1. 1

I found the submit.co website and some listing services (https://www.startupranking.com/booster/list). I was a bit doubtful to go the listing service route and wasn't sure if I have to list my new product on as many sites possible. I will focus on personal outreach instead of the 'spray and pray' method.

      1. 1

Oh man ya that is a crazy long list. Thanks for sharing. Good call on personal outreach.

In my opinion it really depends on the product domain. At least in the beginning I try to google forums and communities related to the product and then post it there. Once the product reaches a certain maturity level then I will submit it to PH. Though in many cases the PH crowd are not the right target audience for the product. So even though the hype will be big the results are not necessarily.

I've never tried google forums. Seems effective? Any other tips for GF?

    Hey!

What I found worked best for Listle aside from PH, was posting in a few relevant subreddits. This actually got us our first 50 users.

I think it's more important to start chatting with your first users and iterate on the product than spending your time to post on 100 startup listing sites.

    1. 2

I never had any success on reddit. a post that made 1.5K+ upvotes on PH did 0 on subreddits

      What's your secret sauce?

      1. 2

On reddit you must provide value to the community before asking for anything in return (AKA promoting your product). In other words: Help others in comments before posting anything. And when you post, make sure it helps your target users to achieve X goal or solve Y problem.

      2. 1

To help you get started you could try to first increase your karma in the FreeKarma4U subreddit.

Then, you'll need to search for the right subreddit for your specific case and don't forget to write the post in a way that shows value, not as you'd just promote your startup.

Totally agree with what @borjaprieto said.

Thanks, that is great advice! Is there an indie maker subreddit or did you post this on others?

      1. 1

We posted on subreddits related to news, as we're building an app that offers personalized video news. Also, instead of just posting about the app we posted Listle links with the latest news.

What are you building? Maybe there's something similar that you can do.

        1. 1

"Listle links with the latest news"
This is pretty smart and I can imagine that this works.

I just launched a startup community growth game and leaderboard. My growth tactic, for now, is to add projects myself and share it with the teams. https://startupcrowns.com

I had a look at Listle and looks very nice. I am installing now! Feel free to add Listle to our site. Happy to list Listle :)

Nice. Well, you could also add the startups from this post and then message them:

            1. 1

Nice :) I posted in that thread yesterday. Not sure what the result will be. I am going to contact some of the startups on the list. Great idea! Now, I mainly use Twitter and contact projects through their website. But this list is exactly my audience. And IH of course ;)
