🤔 What should I build next?

I just bought a new domain: daysum.com, what would you like it to be?
  1. A tracker for everyday activities
  2. A data visualization tool
  3. A space where you can keep your private or public journal
  4. Something else... (leave a comment)

A day counter from and until events that you specify.

    • 17 days since I quit my job
    • 33 days till investor pitch

These things already exist. But that just validates that folk like them. Do something different with it, make it better.

I'm making an app for this live on YouTube (part 1, part 2) :)

        That's great! Thanks for sharing.

I did some research about this idea.

      I found these:

I'm not sure what I can add in terms of originality to these concepts.

On top of that, I think it makes a lot of sense to build a day counter as a mobile app, but I would like to focus on a web app instead because it would reduce the amount of effort in terms of maintenance.

Make it as a tool for teams to keep them on target to meet goals. i.e. 3 days until end of sprint (repeating), 29 days until end of quarter, Project XYZ is due in 28 days, etc.

      Thanks for the feedback @Primer!

I love this idea. I've always wanted to build some kind of data visualization tool that included a timeline. Because I would categorize this idea in the "data visualization" bucket, do you agree?

      1. 3

Hmm I guess it is data visualisation albeit a very very thin slice of that definition.

Interesting concept of coming up with the domain name before the product.

Do you have an idea for all three of your suggestions in the poll?

    1. 2

      Thanks for the feedback @Checkify!

I don't have a very clear idea in mind for the first two suggestions.

For the third one, I was thinking to implement an idea that I've already somewhere else. You leave your email address and the system would send you a daily email with a prompt to write a couple of paragraphs about your day.

I've just seen someone posting about this idea in HN: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28896170.

After 2 days and 16 votes, the "data visualization" category is still on the lead with 38% of votes.

Thanks for all the feedback! It's exciting to see such a positive reaction from the community.

Freelancer time tracker tool, easily track time of what they work on throughout the day so they can bill appropriately. Integrate your own invoicing and payments system and daily, monthly, yearly breakdowns of what they're spending their time on.

(There are probably quite a few of these but you can pivot it some way)

      Thanks for the feedback @Harrjm!

I think it's an interesting idea, but I must admit that I feel the space is already a bit overcrowded.

I would also like to share that the activity/time tracker category that I added was the least appealing to me to begin with, so unless there is a very strong consensus on the poll, I don't think I'll want to spend time building a side project about that.

When I see this domain name...

I imagine something that "sums up my day" -- anything from expenses to tasks and physical activity.

      Thanks for the feedback @konovalove!

How would you like to interact with the product?

Do you currently keep track of expenses/tasks/physical activity daily by any chance? And if you do, how?

I was thinking that it might be easier to just exclude physical activity tracking from the list of ideas because there are already some big players that produce wearable tech competing in the market.

Frankly speaking, I was just answering the question: "Which idea would be in alignment with the domain name the most, so that you could build a product around the name?"

As you've already mentioned, there are (and will always be) pretty big players there, so I would advice you to start solving one of your own problems first.

And do not too much attention to the domain name right now - don't let it slow you down (though I also find business name important even on day-1 which is wrong).

I found an interesting thread about journaling on HN: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28530120

In the comments I found two great journaling app examples:

I love how both of them don't offer the service for free, it's healthy for the customers and for the founders.

I love the gamification part of 750words that makes a lot of sense in order to incentivize people to build good habits such as writing on a journal.

I found this interesting post by @BraydenTW about journaling: https://www.indiehackers.com/post/could-journaling-be-better-in-2021-ba9cf900a4

I'm wondering if GlowAndGrow, that's the project created in response to that post, has made any progress and some learnings from it.

Also, you shouldn’t just create an idea based off the name you pick. Create the name based off the idea you pick.

    2. 1

      Hey thanks for the mention.

Short answer is no. That was me just me thinking out loud. I haven’t made any real progress but it is on my list for a future side project.

About your app name, I think it is fine. It makes me think of a daily summary app. Hence the name daysum.

        Thanks for your feedback @BraydenTW!

I agree that choosing a name before knowing what to build is wrong, but you can consider this just as an experiment. I bought the domain, but didn't know what to do with it and I wanted to see if the collective IH community mind was going to come up with an idea that was good enough for me to spend time building.

        1. 1

Ahh ok I see what you mean.

          Best of luck!

After a bit less than one day from the time I published the poll, the majority of the people, 2/3 :), decided that I should build a data visualization tool.

Now the next question is: did you have any specific data visualization tool in mind when you answered the poll?
